Feels like doom is one of the metal subgenres where you’re most likely to come across female lead vocalists.

Just saw Gojira and Deftones in concert with a friend. I can't say I knew every song, but it didn't really matter when you let the music take over.

E: question: do you guys wear ear plugs to concerts? I suppose I don't want to hurt my ears but I don't want to lessen the enjoyment either.

I always wear earplugs to shows. My tinnitus and hearing loss is bad enough already, I don't want it to get worse.

Honestly, I hear the music more clearly with plugs, it cuts down on the loudness-related distortion for me.

Yeah, I always wear earplugs to gigs. Lets me hear clearer and protects me long-term, and you still feel the bass just as good. I never had much luck with the two-buck disposable foam earplugs you can sometimes get over the bar, though. I ended up grabbing these and they've been serving me well.

Wear ear plugs or you'll gently caress things up. I wish I did. I have a very slight "eeeee" if it's quiet and I am not sure if that's normal or not - probably not and is probably hearing damage.

They don't diminish the show and if anything enhance it as it's not a total wall of noise.

I've never gone to a show without earplugs but once one of then fell out and I was like 'wtf some people listen to it like this?'

I just go buy a pack of the orange cheapo plugs whenever I'm running low and those work fine but get uncomfortable during a long set, you can just get some specialty show plugs though that allow more sound through and just take the volume way down. I should get off my rear end and get a pair

Spanish Manlove

I'm gonna eventually splurge and get the $20 etymotic pair but the 3m ones I get at home Depot are perfectly fine, in sound quality and attenuation. The foam ones just kill all the highs, which is nice for industrial use but sucks for music.

Don't forget that you can often get a free hearing test at audiology colleges as they're often looking for test participants, and sometimes you can get paid for it if you get picked for a study.

Dis is amazing!
I gotta try dis!

You know how you could hear when someone left a CRT television on because of the high pitched whine? I hear that all of the time now. It's tinnitus an while it's not guaranteed to be from loud noises I'm 99% sure mine's from a screaming loud shop vac and saws. You'll get hearing damage from shows without earplugs. Also for shop tools, hearing protection is cheap enough you can just buy a set for every big tool and leave it right on it.

Ironically I would actually wear the foam ones to an industrial show/club so I could hear the bass better

Seconding Eargasm. I also find Hearos are great for a cheaper, disposable option if youre in a pinch. There's been a lot of times I've forgot earplugs and run to a local convinence or drug store and pick up some hearos and theyve saved my butt.

I also keep a bowl of foam hearos in my jam space in case someone forgets their earplugs or doesn't have them. They're pretty comfy.

I sat front row for a Sunn O))) concert once with both foam earos and over-ear headphone style protection and my ears still rang. I think I counted something like 12 full stacks, performing in a movie theater. Was awesome.

Yeah, nthing wear plugs. Shows do sound better with them in, so you won't be missing out on anything, only gaining from wearing them. I developed tinnitus from a cold like three or four years back (not from music, because I wear earplugs!), and let me tell you, it's not fun. It's not the worst case by miles, but it can be real unpleasant.

Weaponized Cum posted:

I believe it was the CEO of Texas Roadhouse that killed himself a year or so ago because of severe, covid-related tinnitus.

Plugs are the way to go. Protect yourself, and most of all, never let the thought that anyone else might think you aren't tough enough because you're wearing them. I've heard/read a few people voice this concern, and it's nothing to worry about. Most people at metal shows wear them. There's nothing tough about losing your hearing because of something so stupid as another's opinion of you.
