Saturday morning cartoon is a cool vibe but it's nutty that they are making something like this after all the old game porting they've been doing. I would've expected at least something isometric. I also think 4 set characters where coop is just picking who plays what is pretty lame. I'd prefer full creation where I can play dress up but at least make > 4 options.

This one is pretty good actually. Reminds me a bit of Skul the Hero Slayer which I liked a lot. Nice pixel art and pretty good action. Unfortunately it's one of those where the first boss seems kind of impossible until you get the upgrades going which kind of annoys me these days. Still, they did a good job with what they were going for.

Also I'm absolutely love B.I.O.T.A. It's not just cheap retro appeal it's a drat fun game and looks amazing despite the limited palettes (which you can change to what suits you best).

I've been playing it too, the bosses are very doable without upgrades. But you'll have to know their movesets to know how to move/dodge and when it's safe. That's the impossible part really. Fun game, will be interesting how much more things they can pack into it. They are definitely trying to hit the same notes as Hades with all the voice acted interactions for every character, but it's not hitting the same highs.

I'm sure they are, I only tried it two times but to learn the moves and how to avoid them it's still gonna take a while. At least for me. Second time I got him down to like half but his attacks are extremely varied, actually the second time I ended up seeing like three or four brand new attacks I didn't get to in the first time. Worse thing about it is it takes a while to get to the boss again. Fun but just not quite enough to get me to want to spend however many hours it would take to beat all (12, presumably, since it's the zodiac) bosses.

Story and characters didn't really do it for me like you said. Just kinda whatever. Art is nice though and the gameplay is good. I think I will at least give it another try with the punchy lightning guy, he looks more my style.

I would genuinely compare the feel of the platforming to something like Hollow Knight, with lots of wall clings and air dashes, and lots of exploration for hidden upgrades and secrets. Bosses are good, with well telegraphed attacks that are fun to dodge. I've generally beaten each on on about the third try, so It's about the right level of difficulty for me.

I've been playing the alpha, and rest assured the game is a miracle. The meat of the game are the timed heists, but the timer only starts once you trigger an alarm (which is generally unavoidable at some point). Before the alarm, you have infinite time to manipulate the buildings and vehicles in any way you want with the tools available to you, in order to build a route you can complete all your objectives in. Also there are levels where you just level someone's house down to the ground with hammer and flame.

It's good stuff. Buy it.

Been toodling around with this one today and I can vouch for it- it's running on a very lite roguelite structure where every item you acquire is a permanent unlock / power increase. You build up attacks out of parts and different weapons react to different parts in different ways, and you're not really meant to be able to figure it out, which is why every passive equipment item you acquire gives you access to a new dude in your big menagerie of samurai who usually has one or more of the special tricks set up in their starting attacks. There's a whole mechanic for storing and restoring attacks between characters. Since enemy attacks are also made of the same parts, you can sometimes figure things out just by observing powerful enemies.

For example, there's an attack which is "call in an archer artillery strike" which is almost entirely useless in its base level because it kind of plunks a single arrow down in a random position in front of you. You can stack a bunch of them up but that just makes it plunk down that many arrows. But then you work out that the multi-hit attack part makes arrows bounce, and you watch an enemy whose whole trick is using that attack and having the arrows bounce and then home in on you, and then you remember the awful enemy whose main trick is a spray of flaming arrows, and all of a sudden you're seeing new ways of approaching what this one attack trick can do. It makes the lite-ness of the roguelite feel really earned and useful because while your toolset to build new attacks goes up real fast, your ability to use that knowledge is limited by your willingness to explore, observe, and collect.

Also the art style looks like what would happen if someone translated a 16-bit sprite character to 3D while trying to keep the essential feel of that original sprite and it hits way more than it misses, especially with how buckwild some of the demon bosses can get in comparison.

I like Samurai Bringer, here's a post I made about it in the roguelikes thread

deep dish peat moss posted:

If you've ever played Dynasty Warriors and thought "This would be good as an action roguelite" then the day is finally here

It's good. I'm having a lot of fun with it - it has a rad system where you build your own attacks and special abilities by combining a bunch of modifiers with interesting combinations. Some examples:
I used a horizontal Swipe move with 8 "Attack an additional time" scrolls that each made another ghost sword swipe in addition to mine, then equipped dual swords and ran around the map like a Whirlwind Barb from Diablo

Combined 3 Jump scrolls with 3 Thrust scrolls while I had a spear equipped and it created a move where I hopped forward and did a triple thrust

Mix 3 Step scrolls with 3 Power scrolls and it becomes a dash that can be used to cancel out of any animation

I haven't messed around much more than that but there's a ton of potential combinations with different elements, several weapon types (bows, ninja swords, samurai swords, magic fans, axes, guns - all the standard dynasty warriors stuff), several different attack types (swipe, reverse swipe, thrust, slash up, slash down, etc), utility bonuses, etc.

It has metaprogression in a few ways and it gives you permanent stat increases, but it's all handled in-run instead of abstracted to a between-runs menu. Achievements can be cashed in for permanent increases to SP (mana/stamina) as well as increases to the number of different scrolls you can combine into a single action, the number of actions you can chain together on a single button, etc. There are purple demon portals throughout runs and they are essentially a sort of boss rush mode where you subjugate big boss demons, each one you defeat gives you a permanent HP boost. Any scrolls you find carry over to all future runs. So even though they're straight up stat increases, you could in theory get all of them in your first run and beat the game. I'm not sure what beating the game entails yet but I think it has something to do with subjugating 9 demons in a row in the boss rush portals.

Outside of those portals it's basically Dynasty Warriors, you go from map to map clearing out huge seas of samurai mooks that mostly die in a single hit. They occasionally drop loot, but there are also Generals among them. Generals have a name and are guaranteed to drop either a skill scroll or a piece of equipment (or both). Then there are Golden generals, who are named after famous Japanese soldiers/commanders/legends (My best run got absolutely smashed by Hattori Hanzo).

Between runs you can choose to start out as any of the generals you've unlocked, which either happens by killing them or by finding a piece of their equipment (not sure which) which just controls your starting gear.

It has a number of things about its presentation that are definite stylistic choices that may not be for everyone. I will say though as someone who previously did a lot of pixel art, whatever filter they're using to translate 3d models to pixel art is very good and most stuff looks like hand-made pixel art, even though it's fluidly moving and rotating in 3d. Videos really don't do it justice.

Anyway I'm just kind of word vomiting all of that because I like the game very much and now I'm going to go play it more

e: Keyboard controls are kind of janky but playable (it's how I'm playing), it would definitely be better with a gamepad though.

I'm not that far into the game and I rarely get past the second area before a big samurai fucks my poo poo up with some weird broken attack, but I'm still having tons of fun. As far as I can tell, there's two ways to figure out combos: the premade samurai you can select at the start of the game often have attack-parts that build a special attack, and then there was the scroll merchant who taught me the power dash. Are there any other ways to learn these recipes? Because whenever I try to mash random stuff together it doesn't tend to do what I envisioned it would.

I actually went insanely far on my very first run. I killed the spider, I killed the centipede, I got to like stage 17 and day thirty something. If you're having trouble, some tips:

The purple warp zones with the lanterns ALWAYS takes you to the creature boss arena. Usually there is a samurai boss first then the creature appears. When I first got there, just like you I couldn't seem to harm it at all, I have no idea why but look around the arena and there will be a warp zone somewhere. So you can RETREAT back to a normal level. You want to wait until you have some good strong magic style attacks before fighting the creature bosses, and having upgraded running (which comes with an item) seems pretty crucial as well. If you can't even harm the boss just look around on the map for a warp zone and retreat. Every level seems to have both a purple warp for the creature bosses and a normal blue warp.

The game makes it very easy to get life back. Enemies drop life items, there are inns you can heal yourself at, but also every time you beat one of the challenges and redeem it at the man statue you heal completely. Redeeming them increases your SP which is great but also heals you so sometimes it makes sense to save one or two until you need to heal.

Finally, do NOT be afraid to just run away. Some samurai bosses just have really tough combinations that can mess you up and stunlock you. Don't be afraid to just run away and try somewhere else.

Is there discussion about the game in the roguelike thread I guess? I'd like to compare notes on good attack patterns.

You're gonna lose a lot early on; you start out with a piddling amount of stamina and ability to build attacks or combos, and those are where both your survivability and kill power come from. Run away, stay alive, don't jump into a demon portal until you're making that decision consciously. There's a lot of tutorial to get through.

You'll need files from X-COM / TFTD so this is technically a steam game, and it's new, so...

https://openxcom.mod.io/from-the-ashes

X-Com: From the Ashes for OpenXcom

quote:

Global conversion mod to OpenXcom. During the alien invasion, X-COM's initiative failed, alien agents infiltrated the ranks of most major governments, and within a few months, they were placed in a puppet regime. The true motives of the aliens remain obscure. Their hostile activities are skillfully hidden from the public. There is no support from the Council of Funding Nations, and Council members loyal to X-COM are scattered and remain concealed. The player will need to learn how to survive in the new circumstances, conduct an undercover struggle against alien forces, and cooperate with global organizations involved in the conflict.

This project is more than just a mod for OpenXcom, as it uses its own version of the game engine. There are many entirely new mechanics in the game - diplomacy, covert operations, new tactical mission objectives, loyalty, and much, much more. You can see the full list of engine features here.

The campaign begins with the player having to defend the X-Com base from an assault of the Men in Black. Then you will need to assess the situation and learn how to use the new opportunities. Many aspects of game mechanics and balance have been changed, giving a fresh experience. However, the gameplay and visual design remain in the spirit of the classic 1994 game.

The game is in development, the current version is the initial release, in a sense it is a "vertical slice" of the game experience. The campaign is limited in time with the first 8 months, after which it will end automatically. While most of the mechanics have already been implemented and a significant amount of content related to the early game has been added to the game, much more is yet to come. Nevertheless, the release is necessary in order to gather feedback and get more ideas and inspiration to keep working.

Ragnorium 1.0 is now available!

quote:

I am happy to Announce that the Ragnorium Build 1.0 is now available on Steam! Please check the patch notes above!

New Feature

*You now unlock Unlock Planets as you play. The unlocking Mechanism is tied to how long you can survive on a particular map.

Quality of Life

*Game is now Localized to Chinese, Russian, and German languages.
*You can now change Colonist Roster Order.
*Objects/Items that are dangerous to interact with now have an Indicator.
*When performing basic gameplay actions or some things happen, you will now receive some audio cues from the AI System. For example, if your colonists are offscreen fighting, you will be informed about this; there is a bunch of these cues. You can also disable this in Options.
*Dead Critters now emit Red Line indicating a potential for Skinning.
*Added Quick Save that happens on Cycle Transitions; this can be disabled in Options.
*UI Scaling is now a Slider, and UI Scaling is now based on Resolution, which means that UI Fidelity and Scale will remain consistent across Resolutions such as 4k and 1080p.
*UI Sliders now have a bigger collider resulting in less miss clicks.
*Dead Enemies and Blood is now disposing of itself after a certain time resulting in less clutter that accumulates over time.
*Scarlet Punk, Fatman, Anubis have refreshed looks and voice lines.
*Few Items like Venom and Flint now have better overworld graphics and cues.
*When you start the Game, you don't have dispatch objectives; you now need to research first Dispatch Objectives; in addition, Objectives such as "Craft a Crafting Table" will now be unlocked gradually as you unlock these building pieces.
*Changed Icons during planetfall, and when you hover over the enemy red icon, it will now show the name of the enemy.
*You can now disable Colonist Researching from Quantum Commander UI directly; this is useful if you don't want anyone to research at the start of the Game.
*Main Menu Transitions are now more user-friendly.

[...]

Engine

*Save Files are now in JSON Format VS XML and are computer culture-independent meaning that they are less prone to crashing in instances where your system has some special configurations. Because of this change, EA Saves will not work on 1.0 Build.
*Improved Initial Spawning Algorithm, which produces fewer situations where objects could spawn too close to each other.
*After your initial planetfall, Harvestable Objects that are too far away from your Colony are being removed in some quantities to improve overall performance.
*Game Performance Improved, and RAM Memory Usage footprint is now close to the 4GB on the most demanding Map on Day 1. As you play, the Game will now utilize transition screens to collect most of the Memory Garbage; there is now an MB Usage Indicator of Managed Memory near the FPS Counter.

Moving forward, i will be keeping my eye on Steam community forums and discord and keep collecting feedback/bugs that people might find and adding them to the worklist for the next Update.

As i mentioned previously, work on Ragnorium with the 1.0 Update won't end, and i will keep working on the game; version 1.0 will serve as an excellent base to build upon and improve further. Right now, i estimate that the next big update will happen sometime in Autumn, and if the situation requires it, i can perform even some updates sooner.

Also, I thank everyone who left their feedback on Steam Community Forums over the years, and i thank everyone who kept me encouraged to continue working on the game.

See you around, and stay tuned for more!

Just a funny av. Not a redtext or an own ok.
So Peglin is out in EA today and it's pretty good so far.

Peggle/panchinko gameplay with Slay the Spire-like roguelike mechanics, where you build a "deck" of balls with special abilities, get relics with more special abilities, and progress down a branching path towards bosses.

Hey it's one of the entries from the Fishing Horror Jam! It's genuinely good but about 15 minutes long. Then again it's under two bucks

I am a child. Also this looks like my jam, are there progression mechanics between runs?

I have not noticed any so far. You get to pick a random relic for your next run when you die, but there's no unlocks or stats or anything like that.

Peglin update: so it's cool and all, but after 3,5h I have reached the end of available content, so my advice is to wait on it. There's only 3 levels right now, and with no unlocks or alternate game modes or difficulties it doesn't imo warrant the price yet.

One time i prank called a bear buildin workshop and said I wanted my mamaws ashes put in a teddy from where she loved them things so well... The woman on the phone did not skip a beat. She just said, "Brang her on down here. We've did it before."
Would Peglin fans enjoy Beast Breaker?
