Unless I did something that'd get my lungs really working, like hauling a sack of spent cat litter to the dumpster, in which case the fogging would become truly troublesome.

Not so much with the Secureclick. :D

As an FYI, any properly sealed n95 without a vent can produce some diffuse fogging because the water vapor passes through the mask and then condenses on your glasses. That's not an indication of a bad seal. A Secureclick or other elastomeric generally will not because they direct the exhaust breath away from your face with valves.

You can also check part 2 of the OP in the nightmare fuel section

Covid directly destroys the placenta and asphyxiates the fetus
https://meridian.allenpress.com/aplm/article/doi/10.5858/arpa.2022-0029-SA/477699/Placental-Tissue-Destruction-and-Insufficiency

quote:

All 68 placentas had increased fibrin deposition and villous trophoblast necrosis and 66 had chronic histiocytic intervillositis, the three findings constituting SARS-CoV-2 placentitis. Sixty-three placentas had massive perivillous fibrin deposition. Severe destructive placental disease from SARS-CoV-2 placentitis averaged 77.7% tissue involvement. Other findings included multiple intervillous thrombi (37%; 25/68) and chronic villitis (32%; 22/68). The majority (19, 63%) of the 30 autopsies revealed no significant fetal abnormalities except for intrauterine hypoxia and asphyxia. Among all 68 cases, SARS-CoV-2 was detected from a body specimen in 16 of 28 cases tested, most frequently from nasopharyngeal swabs. Four autopsied stillborns had SARS-CoV-2 identified in internal organs.

e: getting vaccinated is a good idea but I can’t find anything that shows vaccination can prevent placenta death or infection of the fetus. Not a doctor but the vaccine can’t cross the placenta barrier but covid can so until we have better data I would assume (much like with neurological damage) vaccination doesn’t eliminate the risk

I’m going to be honest,

while this is bad, she spent the whole day doing this and some folks probably got COVID along the way (at the urgent care clinic),

for the American healthcare system, and given the framing of the story, I expected much worse.

At the end of the day, she had Paxlovid in hand, and she didn’t even have to call in personal favors.

This is such a tough situation. Having a persistent infection but unable to eliminate it even with the current best treatments and knowing it. All while the virus is replicating and presumably getting ever more immune resistant and harder to eliminate with time. Immunocompromised people have been put into such a terrible situation by society and people don't care.

Would not presume to give advice on such an important and personal decision, you should really be discussing this with your wife and family and the internet is generally not going to give good advice.

However will say that the overall pandemic experience finally convinced me that we're not going to address climate change at all. That's very hard to accept having young children.

it’s pretty nuts to think how far we have fallen from the promise of “ackshually Coronaviruses have a proofreading mechanism so they don’t mutate much and wash your hands until we have a vaccine and monoclonal and antivirals”

For a while now I’ve been constantly reminded that society/capital clearly deems products and materials “safe” without really understand their impacts (see loads of sunscreens now being called carcinogenic) and I guess assumed academic science was in a little bubble but alas, we also have no loving idea what is going on in that world either

Notes:

- we've been reporting fewer than 300 cases/day for 22 days
- we've been reporting fewer than 200 cases/day for 5 days
- positivity rate remains low, the lowest it's been since Dec-10-2021
- we've been seeing a consistent drop in active cases of just over a thousand per day also for about 28 days
- we're on track for hitting zero active cases in the next 5-6 days, so on or about May-06 / May-07
- new-cases-per-day has been fluctuating back-and-forth - it's been ticking up slightly over the last three days, but it's difficult to suss out if this is the harbinger of a longer trend. Will try to keep a close eye.
- I don't actually know what it's going to mean when active cases hit zero but we're still getting +200 cases per day
