this youtube channel has been posting so many amazing minimal tracks and a crazy amount of unreleased Ricardo Villalobos records over the past few months. is there a better name for what I have deemed "umek techno" it reminds me a lot of the tech-trance stuff from the early 2000s when it was a thing (i.e. marco v). also dubfire plays and produces a lot of stuff like this as well, and that grindhouse track that got super overplayed many years ago is another great example. definitely darker than most techno, but I wouldn't think of it as hard techno either. just a bit more... trancey? if i had to point to something then it's probably the kick/snare and the hoovery synth together that nail down the genre for me tbh i think you're missing the point with trance, it's more of a mindset with providence rather than something you throw in a blender with all the other genres. there's no trance synths or trance drums or whatever you can point to as a descriptor, it's all been copied and thrifted from music at the time to create a party music, trance. you can go back thru sasha/oakenfold mixes and see some off the wall tracks. much like the uk hardcore continuum.

right, I just think of house mainly in terms of a groove and bassline, which I don't hear in that track. tech house for me is like funk d'void - diabla (heavenly mix) I actually do think of trance as a certain kind of sound, mainly a warmer/uplifting one. but different styles of trance have gotten more or less popular over time.
