This is a weird one, but I can't find my ship on this station and I'm not sure if it's a bug or what. I went to drop off a delivery mission item, then figured I'd idle for a bit and go grab some food while the cash rolls in, and now I came back and it's just gone.

It's showing on the map, and marked as currently docked in the property list, but it's not in the list to travel to, nor is it present when I go to the landing pad, and when I order it to undock nothing happens. Is there something I'm missing or has my ship just had a big oopsie while I was looking away and I'll need to commission another one?

See if you can right click on the ship in your property menu an select "remove from internal storage". if you were gone for a long time, it's possible it was sent underground.

If an owned ship has been stored, you can also walk up to the actual dock on the terminal and summon it there.

If you like the whole roleplay aspect of Egosofts X games where you take on the character they introduce with the various starts, it really works well in X4 in particular, because you have the option of getting out and walking around on stations to do basically everything.

What?

I just bought Cradle of Humanity (I already had the Split expansion), and reading through the guides I used to get rick quick the last time I played (mainly crystal mining) it seems that they are out-of-date. Are there any guides people would recommend or good ways I can start with the CoH expansion? Or any tips in general!

If you're going to play the Terran plot, you can get a couple of miners doing AutoMiner in Asteroid Belt pretty quickly. It does require the RNG gods to smile on you and actually have a factory taking Silicon within the sector, though.
Alternatively, depending on the progress you made with your previous saves, you could do a Custom Start - you are given a 'budget' (which varies depending on how much plot stuff you've done before) and I guess you could use that to give yourself a bunch of money, or an XL Miner.

I might suggest a couple of hydrogen gas miners instead of silicon, you're making 111k per trip instead of 150k but it'll be faster as silicon takes a long time to mine. You're going to be running repeat orders until you unlock advanced automine - unless the RNG gods smile upon you and you have 2 computronic substrate fabs in asteroid belt. That's still a lot of outlay early in the CoH experience, not a lot of good paying missions available and the combat can be a bit harsh ( secret is to not be the first guy to make contact with the enemy and try to pick your moments, if you play aggressive and don't let allied pilots take the heat, you will get piled on by the Xenon ), but it is possible to knock over the initial missions and find yourself in possession of extra fighters, maybe a corvette and a destroyer.

One of the things I appreciated the most about X3 (in hindsight) is that the difficulty of the combat in missions was tied to your overall combat rank.
It meant that you could launch straight into Operation: Final Fury when you started the game and not immediately get vaporised. (Or spend dozens of hours trading your way to a fleet of destroyers without ever firing a shot in anger and then faceroll that plot).

Hey by the way, when it comes to VIG and repairing relations with them, I've paid the 15mil bribe to get a whopping +10 rep boost, but now I need to destroy the medical station old mate whats-his-face is on, to send a message. Out of curiosity though, will they turn neutral right after I do this, or will I be required to take further steps afterwards, like meeting up with their leadership for a sit-down? Since I've sent my Asgard into Windfall to blow up the station but I'm wondering if I should make alternate plans, if they don't immediately cease fire. Since their fighters' missile swarm could still pack a punch, if I don't get out in time.

EDIT: Also, is there actually anything in the plotline after this? I figured I'd have to make a station to sell the stuff and make a decision about setting prices high/low like Dal pointed out. But...this part's called 'Epilogue'. So I assume not, and that I just need to do it on my own if I care enough?

RE Spoiler text: Your standing will reset to what it was prior to the Vig Contract against you, but if the Vig fighers keep shooting and you shoot back you might lose some standing till they de-aggress. The last time I did the mission there was no problem and everything dropped aggro but some folks still reported issues with aggroed fighters after the station popped.

Basically it's up to you to make the trip personally to collect the Protectyon in a ship that can carry substrates ( either Raleigh or Astrid ), stick it in your station substrate storage module that can hold it, and sell it into the Avarice systems. Depending on your pricing you might hear more minor plot stuff about it, your Teladi friend will berate you if you sell at market pricing otherwise congratulate you if you sell it cheap, but otherwise Tidebreak also sells Protectyon so the stations in the Avarice sector aren't a write off if you decide after doing one or two trips that it's not worth the effort. You can't automate the gathering and I'm assuming you still have to time your trips immediately after a Tide so it seems a whole bunch of effort that might be a good money source early game but dwarfed by your existing economy late game.

Right, OK cool - so it's basically done then, once I do this. Good that it restores to pre-plot levels, though! I'll probably do one big run with a carrier and Astrids+Raleighs, then just call it a day

Sorry for the DP! Just wondering though... can I deconstruct and remove an entire station in vanilla, then essentially move all the materials to rebuild it elsewhere? Probably sounds like a dumb question either way - I've just never tried, is all. Since although I'm set up in Silent Witness XI, which is going well for me, the kha'ak are a bloody nuisance in there, and take out my Drill miners. So I'm wondering about deleting/deconstructing the entire station, deleting the plot (assuming I can) and then packing up the parts and moving to a safer sector.

Yes but it's almost certainly more trouble than it's worth. And you can delete plots if they are empty.

So yes, but it deconstructs to "build storage" that you have to clown car out of with cargo ships and if that gets destroyed then whoops there go the materials anyways

but also kha'ak Just Spawn in sectors where mining is going on so moving shop is just gonna have them show up and take your miners out somewhere else, you have to devote ships to finding and destroying the spawned bases (usually in the sector you're seeing them in) to make them temporarily fully piss off

I have satellites throughout the sector, but there are a handful of blindspots they could be lurking in.

I honestly just got a mod to allow for a "go explore the entire sector out to XXXkm" order paired with a global alert on seeing any kha'ak, they always seem to spawn stations at upwards of 400k and "blanketing the edges of sectors in repeated go-to spirals that you have to redo when they eat your scout" isn't the most engrossing gameplay design

Thanks to Better Kill Credit I leave combat ships set to protect position near my mining ops ( I'm using Ls just the same ) as a protection side hustle that pays nicely. I have no desire to upset the greater Khaak ecosystem if they're paying for my escorts. I'm at that stage of the game where I'm spending more time staring at the map waiting for station modules to finish so I keep half an eye on my major ore mining systems ( Asteroid Belt and Family Nhuut ) and move the protect position marker around to keep the Khaak population under control.

In-universe, Kha'ak are the only species who can do inter-system jumps without gateways. They're also, supposedly, capable of doing intra-system jumps, but I don't think I've ever seen the AI do that in-game (unless that's the justification for them suddenly appearing around you when you're doing travel mode well outside the sector plane, but he Xenon do that too).

What's the justification behind the jump drive no longer being a thing, btw? I know it's unnecessary due to teleportation in X4, but like, has that just been retconned completely, or?

Since if so, drat I guess that means the Aran has been retconned too. That was a good mobile HQ, that ship :(

The gate shutdown caused a major technological shift, with different areas of the universe having developed or retained different pieces of technology, the X4 region apparently forgot how jump drives work I think is the explanation. In Rebirth they had them but only on large ships, the fighter scale ones being unable to be replicated.

Its been awhile but I think jumpdrives were the domain of the Goner, the human religious order that was some kind of earth cult. And they don't show up anywhere in X4 so

kind of into it, really

They were tied to the jumpgates so it's entirely possible that the organization that controls the gates just stopped them from working because they were worried that the jump drive could (and would) circumvent the networks they set up.

They also work off jump beacons instead of gates, which is how capital-class jumpdrives worked in Rebirth, which is also set after the shutdown. I do kind of miss that since the VFX for the jumpdrive spinning up and then glowing red-hot on cooldown after a jump was really cool but X4 was unfortunately kind of a visual downgrade from Rebirth in terms of throwaway details like that.

Hello Thread, I'm confused by the DLC. There's a collectors edition DLC which is free.
"The X4: Foundations Collector's Edition Content includes: Access to the first two expansions for X4: Foundations: X4: Split Vendetta (2020) and X4: Cradle of Humanity (2021)"
But both of those are still available for purchase?
Or is there a Collectors Edition which you can't buy on steam and for that the 2 DLCs are free?

If you remember a time when patches and expansion packs were different things, then it's probably time to take painkillers for your backpain and kneepain, but it's also more or less how Egosoft still do things.

You can buy the base game and still be on version 5.10, and then independently of that you can install the expansion packs as a DLC.
You can also buy the collector's edition which includes the first two expansion packs for free (as well as some other stuff), at which point you'll have to buy the rest of the expansion packs that're expected to come out; supposedly they've been planning on 4-5 in total - but who knows, nobody expected X3: Farnham's Legacy a decade after the last X3 expansion pack, but here we are.

EDIT: Similarly, Egosoft released X3 in 2005, and the last patch to come out (independent of the expansion packs, I believe) was 2017.
Basically, you buy an Egosoft game and then you get irregular updates to it for over a decade, and occasionally you can spend some more money on the game to expand its content.

I just bought "X4: Foundations" because there's always refunds and now the DLC says I have the game needed but there's no Install or Download button or whatever.

Where would I find the collectors edition? Searching for it just gives me that Extra Content thing. Is the collectors edition a bundle? But then 2 DLC wouldn't be included, just cheaper in the bundle?

I think the thing you are seeing on the DLC list is "X4: Foundations Collector's Edition - Extra Content". This is all the things on the list of Collector's Edition stuff except the game content: the artbook PDFs, soundtracks, etc. The cost isn't free, it's actually N/A as you cannot directly buy this. You'd have to get one of the bundles to get it, at which point you're buying all the DLCs already.

The actual Collector's Edition was a SKU on that Steam page before all the DLC came out, now it's just bundles.

e: I can't comment on what DLCs are worth it, since I think a lot of the core features are actually added with the major version patches that come with each DLC release. I just buy all the DLCs as soon as they come out to "support the devs" or whatever, because there aren't enough Big Space Games out there, and maybe in a few more decades Egosoft will finally pull it off.

After staring at the store page for several long minutes without blinking I think I have it figured out. You cannot buy collectors edition anymore, the extra stuff from it was moved to the X4 2022 Bundle. So if you don't care about the extras just buy base game and whatever dlc you want, or just buy the bundle, that has everything in it.
