the ceo of the (~15 person) company at a prior job >11y ago was a buttcoiner and actually purchased a miner

they later tried to sell it on the bitcoin forums

years later they tried to create their own eth-chain shitcoin token for their own company, advertised it on their site, and required anyone using their custom cms's shop system accept it as currency. it had no value other than being redeemed as cash value in the company store for hosting/web services

it was mostly crowdsourced from this thread so thanks to everyone here

killhamster did most of the great image sourcing of the mining rigs and stuff, he was good at finding dumps of that stuff. his image heavy mining rig posts were the most popular posts on the site

after we stopped posting on the site i was adamant about it staying alive in some fashion as a historical document. I converted the whole Wordpress site to static pages so everything should be preserved in time and it should be easy to host anywhere that can store ~5gb of content with minimal resources.

wait a sec, if luna is supposed to be a stablecoin, as in, should always be worth $1, what sort of speculative value does it even have? why are there people with millions of dollars of it?

Terra is the $1 stablecoin, Luna is the wacky algocoin that ties to it. (Terra [UST] lost its peg and Luna death spiraled along with it)

right right. so who would buy a $1 stablecoin for $1

edit: especially since they're going to have entrance fees that mean they're spending more than $1 on a $1 stablecoin

This post has a better explainer of the scheme than I can give - promises of 20% APY (backed by pixie dust) and two coins tied together algorithmically to make a positive feedback loop, instead getting in a negative feedback loop.

You wouldn't necessarily buy Terra so much as you would buy into Luna via Terra, gamble then cash out via Terra, which would in turn leave someone else holding the Terra.

the stables are used to account for transactions and lock in prices, exchanges will take your fiat but after that you are usually converting other products to and from stablecoins

assuming they hold their peg they are basically poker chips, except the casino is tether and almost certainly fraudulent in a variety of ways

theoretically algorithmic stablecoins don't require a reserve bank entity to issue redemptions and stuff, but with terra you still had this big organization raising funds to inject into their system to keep attracting marks

Bruce Wagner. he was obsessed with having a bitcoin conference take place in some city in Thailand which apparently is well-known for child prostitution. then several posts from other internet forums came to light of him talking about hooking up with "boys" in Thailand. then it was revealed that he scammed people out of money in some kind of mortgage insurance fraud or something during the 2008 crisis (I don't remember the details).

bonus: It was Three Olives (prominent GBS poster who is gay) who uncovered the mortgage fraud thing. When it got posted on Bitcointalk, posters there were speculating that digging up the information was primarily motivated by homophobia.

i just went looking for the "goddamn it bruce" bitcoin show edit and couldn't find it, someone post it tia

I tried skipping through some of the clips of Bruce's bitcoin show on youtube, and I'm surprised he managed to make like 50+ of them. They're one hour each, so hard to pick out the nuggets, but I was reminded of some random things like Charlie Shrem's punchable face, Meze Grill, hearing Karpeles (who did nothing wrong) talking.

One particular episode did feature his mobile phone moving around as I skipped, but I couldn't find *the* moment when it fell off.

Pictured: The only good cop (a fictional one).

Lol forgot about Meze Grill.

Anyway someone asked what the point of stable coins is: like 99% of the time they are used to transfer funds between exchanges with access to US banks, and the vast underbelly of shady "crypto finance". Like the people offering 3x margin loans, or trading any insane shitcoin from any cloned git repo, or refusing to do any KYC or tax reporting. All of those people are too loving toxic to be allowed inside any bank lobby in the US or EU, so they are essentially unbanked and their "dollars" are stable coins. You don't trade Bitcoin or Ether for dollars there, you trade for Tether or the Coinbase coin. Then if you want to get your money out, you transfer the stable coins (possibly through a mule) to Coinbase or Kraken who does have banking access and makes markets for USD and stable coins.

Tether was basically the first stable coin and was started by bitfinex because they got kicked off every bank for having too much crime smell about them. They are money laundering and casino chips all in one.

Roger Ver, He popped up in my part of the caribbean, got scammed by another crook who promised him citizenship here and has been through a lengthy court battle to get his money back. latest i'm seeing from the high court is that he's trying to squeeze US$400,000+ from a defunct company with $30,000 in assets.
