Finished reading the Dragonball manga in its entirety. You can tell that all those chapters were a drain on Toriyama physically because there’s a stretch where the page count gradually struggles to break ten pages before the finale. Even knowing the ending wasn’t “really” end it still kinda tugged at my heart a bit. It was cool. I like the fights in Dragonball more than Z but Z’s fights are still leaps and bounds above the competition because Toriyama’s one of the all time greats at conveying action, but maybe I might feel different if I was reading the manga and not using the Jump app reader. I think the biggest surprise is how much anime filler left in Kai is stuff I would have assumed was canon. Also interesting was the gunmen who are just loving assholes murdering people because the world is ending and they can blame it on Buu being too much for the anime to put in as is. I guess overall I have a lot more appreciation/sympathy for the anime, which given the anime’s reputation I never really expected, but given the chapter lengths you can understand how the yelling memes started.

It doesn't seem Piccolo kept the godly powers or status post-fusion sadly, since he can't create Dragon Balls nor sense Godly Ki (both of which Dende, the current God of Earth, can do). Goku is a god of mortal origin though, and quickly ascending to even greater levels at that.

During the second Goku vs Hit fight, Piccolo realized Goku was in combat because he suddenly couldn't sense his Ki anymore, which meant he had become a Super Saiyan Blue. He didn't know Shin was the Kaioshin immediately either, he felt he was familiar but couldn't quite tell why until a bit later, and IIRC even that was due to Kami's memories.
