The Beast Below is fun and it does a good job of setting up the relationship between the Doctor and the companion, which is something I feel like they never quite nailed again afterward. I think they wound up finding it with Clara but it was well into Twelve's run. Bill and Jodie's gang are great, I just don't think they did as good a job of establishing "this is why this incarnation of the Doctor wants to travel with this person, and why that person wants to travel with the Doctor.

Anyway

Moffat's first season is really good and his last season with Capaldi is great but the stuff in the middle can be REALLY hit or miss. The 60th was great but it took years to Clara's character down as a thing, Amy is less fleshed out version of Rose (it helps that Karen Gillian is just talented as an actress) and his reliance on Riversong bogs down a lot of his tenure.

I think his tenure is a bit overrated to fans because the start and end are so good and he nailed the 50th but there is a lot to annoy or not like in there.

Speaking of this I have to hand it to Moffat that he showed restraint and didn't inject any River Song poo poo into the 50th.

The 50th was as good as it could've been given Eccleston's refusal to be a part of it and the huge time gap between the earlier generation of Doctors and the younger more active ones, my one note being that they should've just made The Night of the Doctor (maybe a trimmed down version) the cold open for the episode. Which is why it would be a bummer if Tennant is the only one involved in the 60th since now we have potentially 5 active Doctors to crossover.

I mean, like I said upthread, part of the problem is the Centenary is gonna feature a bunch of old Doctors and companions -- or so I've heard -- so I assume this is a big reason why RTD isn't going there.

It'd honestly be pretty funny if they just reuse the same old clip of 9 they used in "Day of the Doctor" to include him. Make it part of the whole thing til he comes back, if he ever does. Every ten years, same clip.

that did that with Baker in the 25th special (the 5 Doctors)....they just used a random clip from an episode and said he was stuck in time

20th anniversary. The 25th anniversary was supposed to be "Silver Nemesis" (because it's the silver anniversary), but I think a lot of people mentally tag "Remembrance of the Daleks" as the true special. Both because it's set at more or less the same time period as "An Unearthly Child" (and includes the BBC gag on the TV in one of the episodes), but also because it's functionally the same story as SN, but, y'know... good.

To be fair, every story in that season is saying something about Who, even The Happiness Patrol -- though I think it was The Greatest Show that ended up being the best defining statement on the series at the time.

Yeah this.

Not sure how true it is, you know, but i got the info from the same person who told me about the problems with the Easter special and was they were the first place I heard the Tennant/Tate stuff come from, so I'm inclined to believe them -- and this was months ago, so...

There's also a dumb thing involving the Master apparently trying to manipulate the Doctor's regeneration too.

This read is extremely obsequious to the Moffat era to the point where it actually passes down some of its failings to fan expectations, so IMO it's not that great. Moffat wasn't clever when he broke the fan's expectations of a 'return to Gallifrey' arc because, frankly, he was the one to set up those expectations with the way he ended the 50th.

I mean, I'll be the first to say that by the end of his run, Moffat was lodged so far up his own arse he was eating his breakfast again for dinner, but I think it's fair to point out that the things he teased and swerved away from would have been bad ideas and Chibnall isn't doing anyone a favour by following through.

I just had this mental image of the 60th anniversary special with all the past Doctors reprising their role as new incarnations after Tennant2 before they get to Ncuti. Pulling a Day of the Doctor again, all

“You’ll have to get past me!”
“Just you, Doctor?”
“And me, mmm?”
“And me!”
“And obviously me!”
“And of courrrrrse, me!”
etc
