I'm a few chapters into Symphony of War and yeah, as an Ogre Battle fan, I love it. I'm rebuilding after the first major story beat and It's going to be pretty cool getting into a groove with these unit formations and such. Lot of classes and I just got a fuckin' dragon, so that's pretty cool.

Is the story as long with many paths like in ogre battle 2? And are there hidden units you can get?

Only 'Hidden' units I've found so far are some rare Mercenaries who spawn with multiple skills and better stats. They have a little quote instead of a unit description.

Otherwise its been completely linear through Chapter 17 in terms of routes/forced recruits. You can make any generic (except Dragons) into their own squad leader and you always have way more deployment slots than you have story leaders.

Storywise its been okay so far?

You get the normal betrayal at the beginning that starts you on the path to rebellion... then Chapter 12 kills off the created player character and you lose about half your units for a while as you follow a small group doing desperate rebel poo poo against the big evil empire. Not sure when they come back or how but its definitely an interesting twist to go 5+ chapters without the main character.

Also unit upgrades are paced really weirdly and you'll be fielding top tier units by level 12ish out of 30. It feels kind of extraneous?

Symphony of War is so drat good. Kinda came out of nowhere for me but yeah, it owns big time. The gameplay is fun, story is fun, it looks nice, just well done all around.

The one thing that is annoying me is it seems like some of my units SHOULD be able to upgrade their class based on the requirements but they can't? As in I have all the required stats and resources but it won't work. Does anyone know why that might be? Are certain classes disallowed until certain points of the story, or maybe I don't have the capacity in the unit to upgrade them? It can be a little annoying to be fighting units that I can't seem to acquire myself.

The story seems completely linear as far as I can tell. Not being an ogre battle 2 player I'm not really upset by that but ymmv I guess.

It's an RPGMaker game made using an older version of RPGMaker that wasn't as flexible about UI things as the newest version is, IIRC VX Ace didn't even have mouse support built-in but it's a mostly mouse-driven game. It only allowed Ruby for custom scripts vs. the newest version's JS support. But the UI/UX jank all comes from having to work within the limitations of RPGMaker and Ruby. This is the type of jank it is:

Click your unit to select them then click where you want to move then, then click Attack. Choose "Force Surrender" from the list of attacks and click the enemy - the attack screen shows that their morale is too high for Force Surrender to be effective, so you right click to back up, but that resets your character all the way back to before they moved. Now you need to click them again, choose their destination, click attack again, and choose the attack type you want to use - instead of right clicking just taking you back to choosing an attack type.

If you can deal with that kind of stuff, it won't hold you back from liking the game. I'm accustomed to it from messing around with RPGMaker a lot myself and from playing lots of old PC games recently so it's at most a minor annoyance to me.

e: Also it's a game that would be very hard to play if you are colorblind and it has no accessibility stuff to help with things like that - the only things really differentiating your units on the map from the enemy's are red/blue colors and left/right facing.

For upgrading remember characters need to have mastered their current class first. Check the bar under their EXP bar on their status page and if it isn't full they need to be used in more battles before they can promote.

I've found it's maybe a little easier to play with a controller. Although there is definitely still some awkwardness, when you go back it doesn't go quite that far back, ie when you decide not to force surrender it just takes you back to pre-attack rather than pre-movement.

This came completely out of left field for me, but so far I'd give it a soft recommendation. I loved the SNES and N64 Ogre Battle games as a kid and it always drove me nuts that there was basically nothing else like them for years on end (I guess sort of Last Remnant? Either way, not a lot). The core design of Symphony is good, but I think it still needs a few more months in the oven to really shine.

Pro
+ Aside from the old Ogre Battle games there's still basically nothing else like this
+ Good variety of units
+ Missions are challenging without forcing you into a prescribed strategy to win. Plenty of flexibility.
+ Pixel art on the battle screen is cool
+ Main story's pretty good so far

Con
- As mentioned several times there's just enough weird UI jank that it doesn't feel great to play, and I'm playing on a controller which is supposedly a bit tighter than the m/k controls.
- The menus are sort of a disorganized mess right now. For example, trying to figure out what the class promotion tree looks like is more awkward than it should be and involves a lot of scrolling screens and changing pages
- There's like three different art styles for different parts of the game and at least one of them (what I'll just call the town one) is markedly worse than the others
- They really need a proofreader. There are grammar and formatting errors all over the place, both during dialogue and in the journal
- Most of the support conversations are pretty meh so far. I'm used to there being a pretty wide range in quality from playing FE games, so it's entirely possible I just haven't found the right bonds yet
- Can't rename units/squads. Apparently the devs have said this is coming though

Neon White is a correctly assembled video game. You are an assassin doing contract killings in heaven, for John Cena. Clear levels as fast as possible, and then do it again.

The developers (who made Donut County) claim that this is a game, "By Freaks, for Freaks." I kind of blew this off as meaningless marketing hype, appealing to the mountain dew crowd. But no, this game is for weirdos. While the core experience is simplistic, with fairly easy stages and non-threatening enemies, the fun comes not from beating but mastering the levels. Only after you score an S-Rank do the leaderboards for a stage appear. Your quest to dominate the leaderboards STARTS when you've mastered a level, and gets more irrational from there.

I did this level entirely in free fall! HOW DID THEY GET A SECOND UP ON ME I will destroy them.

But after you've collected every hidden package and S ranked every single stage, you unlock White's Heaven Rush. Play through all 96 stages, including all three boss fights, with infinite lives, for fastest overall completion. Optionally: Randomize the level order. Right now the world record's just over seventy minutes for Heaven Rush, but it's going down fast.

And when you've done battling to be the best, do White's Hell Rush. Defeat all 96 stages, in a random order, on one life. Your hit points persist between levels. And you KNOW there's a leaderboard.

Then do both tasks again, but with all your weapons changed to work differently.

It's also well written. This is Neon Yellow! He's White's best friend. What a nice guy, I'm sure he was damned to hell as an administrative mistake. I bet you can turn your back on him.

If you want to get sweaty and polish your OCD to a mirror sheen, Neon White is super great.

Haha yeah that'll be fun. For me, I am actually enjoying it even if I am aware I don't have the skills to compete on any leaderboard, especially since I really, really don't like using mouse and keyboard but it is basically required here. Competing against myself to finish the levels as quickly as possible is actually quite pleasing. To be honest getting an ace score on each level is a hard enough goal for me lol

Also, wanna shoutout the Nina Turtle game. It has such a nice classic feel. Wish I had some friends to play with though as I feel like I'm definitely missing a lot of the attraction in single player (obviously for a game based off one of the best multiplayer arcade games of all time).

I just wanna add that you can have fun even if you're not super sweaty about it. In particular there's a hidden gift you can find in each stage where your time doesn't even matter and it turns into more of a puzzle game to reach the gift with the cards available to you. You can also hunt for shortcuts if you want to get an S-Rank but the execution is too much for you.

Commander Keen is my hero.
Picked this up on a whim because hey, music puzzles sounds really fun! But the gameplay is plodding and slow. You search for collectibles that are literally laying on the ground just out of view of the camera, and your character moves very slowly, so a lot of your time is spent just jogging around the perimeter of an area checking behind objects for little swirls. The music puzzles are about using the intervals between notes to determine how far to rotate/raise a platform, and quickly becomes tedious rather than interesting. I played for about an hour, and requested a refund. Maybe if that's your flavor, go for it, but I was extremely disappointed.

Donut Dodo has an extremely slick soundtrack and the game itself is fun and a good challenge--highly recommended!

I had the same experience. A little disappointing.

Another interesting looking adventure game. 7 to 0
