if you were described as "gifted" in elementary school but also "lazy" in high school and were told you just needed to "apply yourself" there is a 99.9% chance you have ADHD

ADHD brain works really well when you're in elementary and middle school because everyone's standards for average are "can respond to questions within 30 seconds" and "can colour within the lines without eating the crayons" at that point. as soon as you have to actually put some effort in (high school) your brain doesn't work that way anymore and it's easier to just skip school and smoke fat joints behind the basketball court than it is to try to wrangle your ADHD into submission all while teachers, counsellors, and doctors go "you just need to apply yourself"

a couple years ago I was going through all my old report cards, and literally every single one said "has potential! just has to apply himself!"

it reawakened a rage within me that I thought I had buried long ago. it's so infuriating being told to just "try harder next time" by imbeciles with zero useful advice. not one single "specialist", therapist, counselor, teacher, or adult of any kind ever mentioned adhd. all they saw was an angry kid who didn't do his homework.

not until long after I (barely) managed to graduate college did I start reading all these extremely accurate descriptions of my own experiences online and realize what was going on the entire time, far too late to make a significant difference in my life.

even now I see adhd like things in my youngest, he's super bright and constantly surprises me with what he comes up with, but there's been a few school challenges that have like 20 relatively easy different tasks to do and he's broken down crying* unable to do it (as in just start the overall challenge), and I'm sure most of us can relate to his frustration.

and so I've been talking to ex wife and shes like "don't project" because she doesn't believe I have anything like adhd (if I get a diagnosis the best part will be shoving it in her face)

because I sort of said, how about I help out with choosing what task to do next and the general management of the tasks he's to do (because then once I get the ball rolling it's easy as for him), and mentioned to exwife that its possible that he'll always need help in some ways despite his obvious intelligence and to get mad at him or disappointed that he can't do "simple" stuff like just decide what task to do, but I suspect she won't approach it with as much grace**. time will tell.

makes me think of this younger photographer chick i’m friends with and her parents are from singapore and she’s grown up very non-rebellious and she’s never even been drunk and given she grew up here and we have a pretty decent drinking culture (thanks english colonies) and she went to a regular co-ed highschool but managed to avoid it and it just amazes me because getting drunk on the weekend is just what everyone did but somehow she avoided it.

amazing that some people do different things

there are more and more young people like this these days and it's like totally alien to me.

I get those "remember this day?" popups from like 18 years ago and it's all student parties and it's just carnage, iirc Monday was pub quiz, Tuesday was cheap beers at a lovely bar, Wednesday was club night 1, Thursday was ??? Friday was club night 2, Saturday was parties, Sunday was pray for death

that sucks man, I find that a lot of neurotypical people who have never done psychedelics have a lot of trouble understanding what it's like for anyone who exists in any sort of altered state or has trouble with anything that's "easy" for them. I find it difficult to respect the opinions of people who have such a narrow, limited way of experiencing their reality. no offense.

idk some people are friendly with their exes. you know what I mean though, yeah? there's a lot of really boring, average people out there who have never ever had the revelation that comes with altered perceptions of reality. they are acutely unaware that not everyone experiences things the same way they always have, almost laughably believing that their perception is "objective" and therefore correct. I know it sounds like hippie bs, but psychedelics really are quite excellent at demonstrating how easily and radically ones interpretation of reality can be altered. all your life you could stare at an object, believing it to be a square, but it isn't until you move your head that you realize it's actually a cube.

fun fact, this exact same effect is why you often see fractals in patterns while on LSD. your visual cortex becomes a feedback loop on itself when LSD allows parts of your brain that usually don't communicate to talk to each other. it's just that human visual processing is a lot more complex than an old camcorders white balance circuitry so the fractals are more complex:

I defo agree about psychedelics, and she's done them with me a decent few times, but I think you also need to take decent doses to really get that truly altered perception that start to change your mind, and she was never prepared to do that.

For me, meditation has helped heaps, from the perspective that you make an active decision to observe your mind and the way it works in of itself, rather than just the things in your mind. Like the difference between riding a train and looking out the windows and the scenery, but not looking at the train itself.

So not only am I discovering more about how my own mind works, but building a better framework for understanding how other minds might be different.

yeah, I’m young enough to be right at the start of that. me and my pals did a lot of outdoor stuff like surfing or skateboarding or longboarding in Highschool, and in college I couldn’t risk an MiP while in pharmacy school, plus I had to work full time while taking an extra course every semester to keep pace.

at one point I had four hard courses and 2 jobs at 60h/wk so I could afford rent per semester and didn’t have drinking money or time for it. it sucked and I still graduated 100k in debt from a public uni lol

I recognize that place, it's opposite Womb nightclub in Tokyo. I love the rooftop that can accommodate exactly 1 chair and nothing else. It's in the Love Hotel district of Shibuya so there are lots of bizarre buildings around there; all the Love Hotels try to be unique so they dress up their facades like castles, beach resorts, cowboy saloons, all kinds of stuff. Tokyo's so great for wandering around and seeing weird hosed up buildings.
