A lot of people are going to check that out at the surface level and when they start seeing things that are a massive stretch will be more willing to disbelieve or disregard the 'smaller' amount of real stuff. Twitter is also hellishy bad for any long-form presentation and yet people still keep dumping this poo poo in 1/XX tweets and expecting people to care after the first 3-4 posts.

There’s difference between “that tweet thread could have been strategized better” and “lol like hell I’m gonna spend time spotting the racism.” The guy is obviously really loving racist if you spend even 10 seconds in the tweet thread. Like egregiously so. It’s the same attitude by which people piss all over imperfect #MeToo victims.

Diablo Immortal's monetization is absolutely scummy beyond belief but the framing of "maxing out a character" is basically nonsense. If you tried to do that in diablo 2 with jsp gold or whatever it would take similarly ridiculous amounts of cash, because the entire point of games like that is to farm to upgrade your gear so you can farm more so you can upgrade your gear more etc. Basically if you pay money to get the best everything ever, there's no more game to play. It's kinda pointless. Nobody is actually going to do that. The actual bad parts here are the obfuscation around drop rates, what you actually get for your money, misleading names for things like 5 star gems, psychological manipulation via timing of purchase popups, and so on. Not to mention the whole peddling gambling to children bullshit.

Zach went on to make his awesome turbonerd games and teach highschool CS, but he's public that losing billions of $ to Notch depressed the hell out of him. We chatted for a minute after his talk at the NYU Game Center (an actual MFA & PhD for games), and he's definitely more of game engineer/laborer than indie Artists like Jon Blow. 8 years = tons of games, vs 1 The Witness. That twitter thread also uses kiwifarms for a lot of its evidence too. It's a very mixed bag. Looking through the screenshots, these are the things stand out as genuinely offensive, and not extremely weird handwringing about porn jokes: - calling a black woman overly aggressive - using racial slurs in "jokes" - a lot of arguing about whether Islam is misogynistic - grossly objectifying female celebrities in public In general, that twitter thread epitomises a lot of what I want to avoid when it comes to discussion in this thread: taking concrete facts and spinning out into conspiratorial editorialising based on grudges against particular developers.
