Mystic Caves has some neat aesthetics, but mechanically I don't really like it - lots of crush hazards and some stuff that makes you wait or fiddly jumps for the hanging switches. Lava Reef Act 1 has a much cooler track.

Oil Ocean is not a favorite from S2, but it does feel like one of the more unique/standout zone themes from that game.

True but I’ve always found the level itself to be kind of a slog to get through (especially Act 2)

That's why they picked it, so it could become an actually good level. Better than rethrowing overused zones like green hill over and over again, which sadly they were probably largely forced to do.

Nobody was clamoring for Oil Ocean & Metallic Madness in Mania. I never expected those two stages to be remade and they are so much better than the originals.

Metallic Madness is one the best levels in Mania.

It's not hard, I just don't think it's a particularly interesting level mechanically. Though I don't doubt they could have done something interesting with it.

I was watching Chaotix on GDQ today and the ships on that level made me think of the subs on Mania OOZ.

I think what fucks me off the most about the Sonic 2 special stages are the inertia you have to build up to go from one side to another without either being a sluggish rear end in a top hat or zooming directly into a bomb.

And your biggest danger isn’t hitting mines. It’s not hitting rings :suicide:

You're supposed to jump from side to side to switch over. I remember loving the momentum feeling when you go all the way around.

Metropolis has some really annoying obstacles, namely the screws with the exploding starfish. Also the Mantis badniks are placed in a lot of mean places.

I'd rather see it revisited then Hilltop though.

I'm a simp for Lava Reef, or at least Act 1. I think nowadays there'd be a lot more interplay between fire and ice.

The Act 1 music may be my favorite track in the game, especially with the Mania remix along for the ride. It's an awesome blend of intensity, mystery, and power.

Sonic CD: Metallic Madness for sure, but maybe don't make tiny sonic mandatory. Of course you can skip it if you know how in CD but I wouldn't put it on the intended path. I'd also like Wacky Workbench past, Quartz Quadrant and Tidal Tempest. Hell, every stage except Collision Chaos.

If you listen closely to Titanic Monarch's music you can actually hear elements of Collision Chaos in there, mostly the Past version. It's pretty neat!

Say what you will about Metropolis Zone, but the theme for it is one of the best in the game.

Pants Donkey

Also, didn’t Big Arm used to make you lose your rings if you were grabbed while Super/Hyper? In Origins it just harmlessly bounces you on the ground, which does eat up a lot time but lacks the menace of a boss that could actually hurt the Super forms.

Yep, it kicked you out of Super/Hyper entirely. Really odd thing to get rid of.

Actually even in the original it only bounced you if you were in Hyper form (it did indeed knock you out of Super form though)

I feel like I've noticed some different super behavior while playing through Marble Garden, I don't remember being able to smash through walls and I swore I saw some sprites I didn't recognize while doing the top tunnel thing, but I might need to boot up a rom of S3&K to see if i'm just imagining it.

Also, there's something screwy going on with the camera during the crusher section towards the end of act 2 of Marble Garden.

Origins added a lot of spritework to Sonic 3K.

-The weird tree thing in Angel Island Act 1 that you go into was using the Sonic 2 sprite but now uses Sonic 3’s
-When you enter those areas on the top in Marble Garden, instead of just going back and forth, the sprite was updated to look like you are going around and around
-Carnival Night’s infamous barrels now show the ducking and looking up animations, complete with rotation sprites for each. Including Super Sonic and his unique crouching sprite
-When entering Hidden Palace via giant ring for the first time, there are new sprites and animations as your characters looks at the chaos emeralds going away and turning into the inactive super emeralds
-Pretty much every special animation of Sonic on objects such as barrels and the spinning things in hydro Water Town now have a dedicated Super/Hyper Sonic sprite instead of just using the regular Sonic sprite with the different palette.

There’s more I’m sure, but it’s impressive how much polish went into the graphics.

I really loved Oil Ocean in 2 because it's so different and has such an underused aesthetic but I kind it rather bleh in Mania.

Hydro city is the actual stinker that kills the game for me every time though. I have six saves on my switch that all end on that slog. It is such a massive downgrade from the original version of the zone, they added so many things that mess with how amazing it is in 3. They (Oil ocean and Hydrocity) both have the same issue where they start to creep toward Carnival Night zone level of abrasive flow and pointless mechanics. Setting the level on fire does rule but it's a hat on top of a lovely hat.

If they ever manage to get a mania 2 out I hope it's six bad zones made good and six original zones.

Well 5 bad zones and then a version of Casino Nights where you set it on fire.

Also, I forgot the remade Sonic 2 HPZ doesn't actually use the HPZ music. I have to assume it was Sega saying no, but what an odd choice/restriction - like I can't imagine it's a rights thing since HPZ's music was in Sonic 2 originally, and they reused tilesets and art without issue.

It was a choice on the developer's part and not sega. The original HPZ music was probably just a track that they hooked up temporarily but wasn't intended, and it seems like maybe the Mystic Cave 2P music was actually intended for the zone later (and that's why it's that way when you hack in in the final game). But either way, it was felt that the beta music didn't fit the feeling of the level, especially in terms of the looping repetition, and the MC2P music did.

hatty posted:

Best parts of Mania were Studiopolis and Press Garden, would have loved a mania 2 where they didn’t have to put GHZ and CPZ in it

In terms of 'have to', keep in mind Mania was originally pitched as a 4-zone short anniversary celenration game and then Sega suggested that since the level art and layouts and mechanics and gimmicks and bosses had already been ripped/recreated for the other games (and 3k's stuff had been privately ripped too) maybe they could put in some of those with new level designs as a fun extra anniversary celebration that wouldn't take much more time! And then the Mania devs went extremely over-the-top improving the art and level and adding new gimmicks to the point where it did, in fact, take much more time. But yeah, without the reuse it would be a Sonic 4 Episode 1 length game.

Pants Donkey posted:

I said before, but it's impressive and sad how much extra polish and effort went into all of this stuff in general and then got kicked out while still buggy.
