Also, another question - are there any mods that let you upgrade vehicles? Like, welding plates over the side windows, give your car a bullbar, etc. so that they're more survivable?

I'm not sure if there are any that let you modify vanilla vehicles but these two from Autotsar are really good:
Jaap Wrungel: a 4x4 with loads of customisation options
Bus: create your own battle bus

I've been considering a nomad playthrough for my next run using this RV Interior mod which looks great, probably a bit OP though!

I have words and they're all negative. I'm a lizard-brain level player who loves hoarding resources and seeing meters tick up and Dysmantle somehow failed to engage even me. I played too long to refund it and now it's on my Steam account like dead weight. 90% of the game is just going to be you standing against an object holding the button down to keep whacking at it and slowly collecting resources you need stupid amounts of. Somehow this is intensely unsatisfying, even to someone who enjoys resource gathering in most games. I can't fully explain it but just punching fences and chairs and barrels for hours on end is not a good gameplay loop.

More importantly the whole thing feels like a really, really tepid action RPG in execution, but then padded to hell with a really terrible resource gathering system. There is no actual survival element to this game.
You mostly go around fighting badly coded zombies and holding X or LMB against whatever resource-shaped object is nearby. There wasn't even any base building when I played (post-early access), but apparently there is now? Though looking at the update info for it, it appears "base building" is pretty much just laying down machines that turn one resource into another resources so you have to slam out a dozen or so and sit around and wait while they slowly spit out processed metal or whatever else.

I felt very similar. I don't consider Dysmantle to be a survival game or a very good game in general.

If you want to play the I-didn't-know-this-was-a-hippo-bar game with me, that's fine.
Recently some friends and I played through the first bit of Craftopia. It's free on gamepass, and if you're into extremely Japanese 'survival' games I'd say give it a shot. It's fun right up until the midgame where you weirdly run into a poop-based bottleneck.

Does leaving ovens on cause a fire like it did in the old (maybe current as well) tutorial? And are zombies attracted to fire? I've just started trying to do it as a really dumb way to mark houses I've cleaned out but I haven't seen anything happen yet. It would be nice if it drew zombies away from my safehouse too.

I think it only causes a fire if something is in the oven to catch fire.

As far as base locations go, I think my favorite base location is a self-storage area west of Riverside. There's a little area with a couple of warehouses, a gas station, a trailer park, and a couple of stores. The self-storage is very nicely fenced in, so it doesn't take too much to secure the place, and you can see the zombies around you, so it's easy to set up retreat options around the perimeter if you're paranoid. The little storage units are wonderful as well, and the flat roofs on them make it easy to set up water barrels on the roof and plumb the region below.

The only real downside is not having easy access to an oven, but there's barbecues in the trailer park, and you've almost certainly found at least one generator in the storage area, with easy access to the gas station just down the road to keep it topped off. Between the storage unit loot and the warehouse loot, you're more than prepared for just about everything. There's also plenty of farms nearby for getting some farming going for long term survival.

Yeah, learning this the first time can be rough for a lot of reasons, like running out of gasoline on a very low tank when you're a ten minute run to the nearest gas station, but it's actually hella useful utility since having the flexibility to leave it on or turn it off can save your life if you need a quick getaway.

That and cars that have some engine damage or have been hotwired will often take a couple tries to get the engine to turn over, which can be just enough time to get ripped out of your car window and showed politely back to the character creation screen.

Riverside is a great spot for a starter base, I've built a base on top of the gas station in probably a half dozen games, but eventually it's too far from all the other cities and towns and I get bored and move somewhere with a lot more zombies and then I die.

Pro tip: you can farm anywhere, even on the roof of a building. All you need is a Shovel and at least 1 empty sack to transport dirt.

Using open fields is kind of bad because a small group of zombies can easily trample all of your crops. But on a roof? Hopefully your base is set up to not even let zombies up there. And if you're in a dry spell, you can siphon some water from your rain barrels to water your crops.

You can move electric ovens in yourself with Electrical 3! It's more fuel-efficient to use a wood burning stove or BBQ but I much prefer the convenience of an electric oven hooked up to a generator.

That said, it's quite tedious to get Electrical 3 in the base game. I've recently been using this CDDA Reading mod which lets you gain XP directly from reading skill books. Definitely overpowered but opens up a lot of the game without grinding.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY DOG
Lumberjack, Park Ranger are very good for pretty obvious reasons. Engineer is great because it gives you several exclusive bomb recipes you can't obtain otherwise, the pieces are things like hair spray cans and aluminum foil.

Veteran is very good if you ever want to get into guns, because of the Fearless trait unless you're ok constantly scrounging and scarfing beta blockers. I am not sure if there's an open trait that is as good as what Veteran starts with.

HelloSailorSign
Jan 27, 2011

Engineer is nice too for the electrical skill boost, but generally I go Park Ranger. You do so much carpentry, foraging, and trapping as part of long term survival that the skill bonuses can save vast amounts of time. With the new foraging system, Park Rangers also have an inherent bonus to search radius, and ignore some amount of darkness and weather effects to the radius. They also have some buffs to finding certain items which is only beaten out by Farmer imo.

I use Dynamic Traits mod to change things over time, so I tend to start a Park Ranger with Slow Healer, Underweight, Pacifist. This lets me pick up Fast learner, Outdoorsman, Lucky, and.... I think Dextrous and Fast Reader?

Maybe but I waited outside for a few days and it was on a single player server so I guess I was the administrator of one. The issue was that I couldn't even get within ten yards of the walls of the compound so it's not like I could try the front door.

That is normal behavior between the hours of like... Sunset and sunup basically. To prevent you from hiding out inside instead of building a base. But yeah if it's happening at like noon that's a bug.

Re: what it does so well is the whole post apocalyptic atmosphere, the way all the semirandom Points of Interest are plugged together in what feels like a very natural way, without the cookie cutter procedural generation feel of basically all other games in the general ballpark. They also got the early and middle game a lot smoother with pipe guns easily craftable on day 1.

I don't really like how you're pushed into spending levels on Intelligence because all the crafting benches and vehicles are gated behind it but otherwise it's very reasonable to focus on any stat and its associated skills and have a very different experience on different playthroughs. So much replay value!

Big Scary Owl posted:

What character occupation do you guys generally use in PZ?

It depends on what I want to do. Lumberjack if I want to mess around with axes, Engineer if I want to make bombs, etc. Repairman is a good all-rounder since it starts with points in a lot of good things; carpentry is essential to long-term play, maintenance is extremely good but hard to come by, and short blunt is a pretty good and easy to find weapon type.

The biggest thing about this choice is that you also gain a massive learning boost for any skill points that your character starts with. The tooltip for this is a little misleading; a character starting with 1 point in a skill gains experience 4x faster than a character starting with 0 points. The change is to your base learning rate, so it's multiplicative with skill books
https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Skills#Starting_Skill_Levels

My last character was a Police Officer because I wanted to experiment with guns. Guns are very very good at 5+ aiming, pretty much any pistol becomes a headshot machine and many of the hunting rifles, while slower to fire, can take out 2+ zombies per shot at a range where they won't aggro. The noise is much better than it used to be and even a 2x scope on a pistol can give you enough range to eliminate big groups before they can even reach you. There is also plenty of ammo all over the map if you know where to look

Most of my characters have been Burglars for the increased sneak XP and immediate access to vehicles however recently I've been leaning into min-maxy builds focused on a single weapon type. It's nice to be extremely capable with one type of weapon (as long as you can actually loot one in the first place!):
  • Guns: Police Officer (Veteran is too expensive IMO)
  • Spears: Repairman for carpentry and maintenance (both will make your spears last longer)
  • Axe: Lumberjack as I believe the Axe Man trait now correctly affects combat axe swings - need to test this though
  • Long Blunt: Burglar with the Gordanite trait from More Traits and Better Lockpicking as your primary weapon (crowbar) can also be used for crimes
All my builds use Strong and Athletic for -20 points meaning I need to take a lot of negative traits and specialise in a particular playstyle. If you are planning to exercise, Unemployed can give you more flexibility around playstyles.
