Throwback to the time Bill Russell talked about playing against the Philippines in the Olympics and said something to the effect of, "When I saw their center was listed at 5'10", I wanted to see how badly we could beat them."

IIRC they won by 70+ points.

Rare thing for a legend like Russell to stay active and involved and visible right up until the end. Couldn’t ask for a better ambassador for the game

I forgot that Bill Russell coached the Sacramento Kings for most of a season in the 80s. He went through a lot of adversity in his life, but no one should have to go through that.

when I was 8 I was assigned the number 6 in hockey even though I really wanted 9 and my dad said I shouldn't be upset because Bill Russell wore 6 and he was an all timer. From there I got whatever kids books on him they had and continue to be infatuated with him throughout my life. Truly one of the few people who got cooler with both age and the more you learned about him. They should rename Boston (the city ) after him.

It really underlines how awful a fanbase is when a guy carries them to almost a dozen championships, mostly consecutive, and they still can't contain their loving racism long enough to give him some basic freedoms.
