So I just bought an Asus Vivobook with a GeForce RTX 3050 Studio card. Ideal for my needs for location video editing/ wrangling and very pleased with the OLED screen. Only problem is that the latest drivers for the card won’t install. The GeForce App shows the current installed drivers are from 2021, and shows an update is available to install. It downloads it and then.. nothing happens. No error message , nothing. Just doesn’t install them. Any help gratefully received! Infuriating.

Your trying with the GeForce app? Have you tried just downloading the driver's directly? You don't need anything special.

This is very similar to the device I'm looking at. How durable are they? I have little kids and I'm careful with my devices but am drawn to ThinkPads because of that, plus I'm going to be lugging it around a lot.

Yoga's are good but they aren't really the same as thinkbooks in terms of design build. The Yoga line isn't the 2-in-1 line, it's the "Easy to move around" line, which is mostly 2-in-1 but not entirely (and I suspect they will eventually move to entirely). I'd still rate them pretty high in terms of consumer laptops though.

There's a couple really good deals going on right now:

Any recs for a work computer (mostly spreadsheets and reports and stuff, not engineering or CAD or anything) that's <$500?

I'd be taking it on flights, so it would be nice if it could play a movie. Don't need it for gaming.

What's the general consensus on the Surface Pro 8? I'm looking to replace my Surface Pro 3 which I've really liked over the years but is definitely showing its age now. Mainly use it as travel computer and it's size/weight have been appreciated when I also have to lug around a work laptop.

Used Thinkbook probably. If it has to be new you can maybe get an ideapad or something for around that, maybe with a Ryzen 5 if your lucky. Under $500 is a tough price point.

I start a new web design job on Monday, and they just gave me these three options for a work laptop. I'm happy with either Mac or Windows, and my primary concerns are:

- Great color accuracy (sRGB and Adobe RGB)
- Screen that won't give me eye strain (no flickering to control dimming or whatever)
- Little/no IPS light bleed
- High contrast screen
- Comfortable keyboard for coding
- Battery life/portability is nice

I'm leaning towards the Yoga 7i because I have an older Yoga and I like it, but the Macbook looks more portable and retina screens are unbelievably good (last I heard). I think the Yoga 7i only has a 60hz refresh rate, and I can't find anything about the contrast, but I don't know where to look and it's too new to have many reviews. Most I find are of the older 2021 model that was 1920x1080. I haven't thought about buying a laptop in maybe 5 years, and I was hoping to have this information earlier than today, so I appreciate any help making a decision.

I'd do the macbook pro in a heartbeat as long as your company doesn't have any issues with the M2 chip. 8GB might be an issue depending on what you need to compile. The Yoga is far better than the Envy if you want the bigger screen and more RAM.

You can't get a 16GB MBP? Or even one of the 16" ones if you want a bigger screen?

What's wrong with the M2 chip? I'll mostly be compiling small websites, but I agree 8GB is the one thing holding me back.

I think they meant "if your group is OK with non-x86 CPUs", because the M2 is a strict upgrade to the M1 in every way. If they're offering you a Mac, then ARM CPUs are OK, and I'd take the Mac out of that lineup. Well, actually, I'd ask for a Macbook Air over that Pro, the 13" Pro has a much worse keyboard and worse battery life than the Air and the Air is cheaper.

The reason why the 13" pro M2 is the one on offer is the whole reason why that SKU actually exists. It's the corporate fleet model.

And yeah, the question is if all of your software works on an ARM mac.

Your assumption is that corporations are paying MSRP for it. By keeping the chassis the same as the last model, there are more opportunities for corporate discounts in bulk.

It also affects things like production and inventory channels and sameness of equipment. Companies don't care if it's M1 vs M2 macbook pro 13. There's just a steady supply of 13" macbook pros that are all exactly the same and at some point the chip will change over to M2 from M1 and everything is uniform back through the 4th gen with intel chips as well (even though different arch).

The more I read about the Mac, the more I'm drifting towards the Yoga. Barebones 8gb probably won't cut it, and I don't want to run into a problem where I can't run something I haven't even thought of yet. Literally the only plus is the retina display with massively better contrast and refresh rate.

If you're between the yoga and an apple laptop, the apple is going to be at least twice as good in every metric, except maybe screen brightness (only 20-50% brighter screen)

absolutely unhinged claims itt

agree though the MacBook is the best of the three. If you wouldnt have any concerns about 16gb RAM in the yoga, then 8gb in an M2 MacBook is probably enough. They use a bit less and share more efficiently.

I mean, I just had a contractor this week complain about some MS data tools that didn’t work on ARM Macs. I can’t remember what specifically it was offhand as their environment wasn’t my responsibility. There’s not a lot of stuff out there that flat out doesn’t work, but it’s still worth doing research.

Building and running x86_64 Docker containers locally on the ARM Macs is slow as poo poo, slower than the same operations would be on the old Intel Macs. When you're running Mac x86 binaries on Mac OS, it's able to use Rosetta 2, which is pretty fast and great. When you're using bhyve to run a Linux VM and running x86 Linux binaries, it's using qemu to emulate x86, which is extremely slow.

To add insult to injury, qemu via Docker out of the box can't run AVX/AVX2 code, and will fail if you try to.

Lollll whatttt

Mods???

There might be a handful of OS9 custom accounting programs from the 90s that no longer work

The first six months after release there were a few hiccups, but really within 3 months 99% of issues were resolved

In the last two years of supporting esoteric software tools on x86 and M1/2, we only ran into one issue where a custom pip installer couldn't find a path if you had installed a specific version of python via brew

M1/M2 are gold if not platinum compatibility now

Scientific computing, we're packaging a TON of software that we aren't primary authors / maintainers on so we can run everybody else's analysis tools in our environments. These aren't our applications, it'd be tricky to set up build servers for other people's projects that aren't targeted to run in Docker. It could be done, but theres so much manual work and tweaking that I'm perfectly happy doing it myself, just mildly frustrated at the slow-ness of emulating x86_64 with qemu.

My brother just bought an inspiron 💀

His old laptop was old and died from too much illegal stream site malware or whatever. he said he'd talk to me for recommendations in the afternoon, but he just came back from the best buy with a 16" inspiron with a 4K OLED screen. I know the thread doesn't like these laptops, but how bad is this thing if 90% of what you're doing on it is watching videos? I imagine there were more cost-efficient options, but it's not going to make him miserable or anything, is it?

voiceless anal fricative
May 6, 2007

A 4K OLED sounds like a great way to watch videos, he just spent a bunch of money on something that isn't as durable, well built or well-specced as literally anything else at that price point. But he'll be fine, it's not going to like fall apart or self combust or anything. A 16" probably even has a big enough battery to get him 5 or 6 hours of video watching.

My 2018 Thinkpad T480 is now running at like 80C basically all the time. This is in reference to lots of tabs on Firefox more or less. Not video content predominantly. But also stuff like even windows update had core temp showing it pushing 90c for an extended period. Is this normal, and if not what can be done about it?

Apparently he told the best buy employee that he didn't really play games on his laptop so that's what they gave him (it has an MX550), but I mentioned to him that he used to play TFT and league and poo poo on his laptop, and he was like, "Yeah, and I did like playing those first person shooters too..."

The fool. I probably would've had him get one of those asus or gigabyte oled laptops with an actual GPU so he could play warzone and poo poo (even a 3050 Ti would've been fine), but oh well. He seems happy enough with the new screen as it is, and he'll continue doing all of his gaming on a tablet. I can't comprehend it, but it's his life.

Yeah check the vents, there should be less than 5 human or pet hairs inside your laptop total. That laptop you can just unscrew the back and pull it off, blow out all the crap

There's a tiny chance that your cpu thermal paste has become unglued but more than likely your laptop ingested a floof of fuzz in the wrong spot/s

It's this in response to the laptop from 2018? Almost certainly out of warranty. 4 years might mean degraded thermal paste but I'd also wager it needs to be blown out.
