I genuinely think a lot of the people bellowing at Kevin Smith about how Teela being in the show is misandry, actually, had no history with He-Man. The classic show, He-Man shows up in every episode, sure, but it was also a show that was built around its ensemble cast of action figure characters, and often He-Man was sharing the spotlight. Teela especially was the star of plenty of episodes.

They were (and are?) just the masculinity-obsessed conservative nerd brigade and its associated clickfarms looking for new stuff to drum up controversy about. What they're actually fans of is hour long Youtube videos entitled "Feminism Ruined [Pop Culture Property]".

Thundercats and He-Man's are shows I never heard anyone bring up until they decided to be mad about new versions of them came out so I'm struggling to believe it had any fans to begin with.

At least the people mad about Teen Titans Go would say that they liked the 2000's version occasionally.

Both series had tons of fans, yes, but were both still fairly niche. Both series also got mature-ish reboots in the 2000s, but neither lasted long because of the still relatively niche nature of both franchises and because the Great Millennial/Late Gen X Nostalgia Pandering Renaissance hadn't quite kicked in yet.

But yeah, if you're at all familiar with the original 80s show that MotU:R is based off of, first of all, it's toy commercial primarily. Secondly, He-Man only tended to show up near the end of each episode as the means to solve the episode's problems, and when he DID show up early it was usually to just do generic strongman poo poo because Filmation was cheap as hell and only had an animation reservoir of like 5 or 6 stock scenes because Lou Scheimer hired a pair of bodybuilders, one for the male characters and one for the female characters, and filmed them preforming various actions against a white backdrop which the animators then painted over with someone like He-Man or Skeletor or Teela or Evil-Lyn. So He-Man only showing up twice in Revelation (in the flesh anyway, he's in every loving episode either in flashback, or as an illusion, or just as Adam) at the beginning and end of the story is basically in keeping with an average episode of Masters of the Universe, only spread out across five hours instead of 30 minutes.

Plus, in addition to all the character work put into everyone across the series, a big part of the 80s show was all the preachy woke morals it wove into every episode and then summed up at the end for the really dumb as poo poo paste-eating children, stuff like "share your toys with your siblings", or "listen to the adults in your life, they have valuable knowledge to pass on", or "don't be a loving rear end in a top hat like Skeletor... even if it's kinda fun." Stuff that sailed over the heads of the clods who got ripshit mad about Revelation for whatever reason (racism and misogyny)

Also the literal second episode of the series is all about how Teela has a special destiny and is one day going to become more powerful and important than He-Man, but not until she's ready to become who she was meant to be. And it takes about 40 years in real world time for that to finally happen.

I love Kevin Smith's response to all the batshit broke brainers on Twitter and YouTube just making up nonsense and running with it like it was things that actually somehow happened, just him going "Uhh, I had like 20 executives from Mattel leaning over my shoulder and breathing down my neck every second I worked on this show. Do you honestly believe they'd let me do even a tenth of all the stuff you've somehow convinced yourselves that I somehow did? Get real."

It is highly doubtful those mad about Roar* or Revelations watched the first Thundercats reboot or the early aughts He-Man reboot (which was also pretty heavy on Teela) or, really, had more than a vague memory of watching the shows as a kid if that.

Speaking of, since Hordak is confirmed for Revelation Season 2 (or “Revolution” as it’s properly titled) I wonder if it’s possible we could get some She Ra content as well or if rights issues would still prevent that. Though any characters from that series we did get would probably be closer to their 80’s counterparts than they would be to SPoP (I suppose the writers could always combine personally traits or something since when they appeared in a tie in comic the generic Horde soldiers had their design from the latter show)

I’m also curious how they’re going to shove Hordak into Season 3 of the CG series (as I said above, apparently he appeared in a recent toy leak alongside Mer-Man and Moss Man and the latter two have already been confirmed) since as far as I know it’s the last one for that show and if the past is any indication we won’t have a whole lot to work with in terms of episodes.

Also not sure how credible a source this is but rumor has it that the CG show has been renewed for a fourth season set to come out next year and a fifth is currently being optioned:

The CG show looks like it's taking a page out of the 2002 He-Man cartoon with regard to Hordak. He'll probably show up in the flashbacks with King Grayskull and the Snake Men and then turn up for real at the end of the season as the new threat to Enternia. Because the trailer for season 3 makes it clear the main thrust of the plot is going to be dealing with Skeletor once and for all. And it's apparently become the natural order of progression now that when Skeletor is defeated in MotU, the next head up the totem pole of evil that you bring in to replace him is Hordak.

It might be possible that this version of Hordak IS King Greyskull (the trailer implies he hosed around with Havoc in the past so maybe he was mutated somehow like Keldor was)

Media illiteracy and being a roiling chud go hand in hand. It's not that surprising. An entire generation has come of age not realizing that their favourite media properties were trying to teach them how to be better people when they were kids and now that they see it happening in modern media through adult* eyes, suddenly everything is woke and it makes them mad.

Which is funny because some cartoons (such as the OG He-Man) were arguably even MORE blatant about it back in the day to the point of literally having PSAs at the end of each episode

It'd be interesting if this Hordak takes personality as well as appearance cues from SPOP, though. Just a big sad rejected child soldier who burned out on the whole world conquest thing long ago. Make him someone for Rampage to bounce off (possibly literally) while Skeletor remains the ultimate heel.

That's what I was referring to - his new design looks like a blend of his original look and the lankier, more priestly one from SPOP.

I do hope the rumors of the show getting an extra season or two wind up panning out though as otherwise I’m not sure if we’ll have enough time for a proper Hordak appearance (unless this one gets bumped down to the rank of minion or something like you suggested)

Revolution probably won't be out until 2023 or 2024. It took three years for Revelation to from concept to finished product, but that was starting from scratch. There seems to be more of a horse in front of the cart this time around, so that may speed things up a bit, but the thing is animation takes a lot of time. So Kevin Smith and co. might have had the story and scripts for Part 2 (and possibly Part 3, by the sound of it) locked fairly quickly after Revelation's second half dropped, but Powerhouse's animators can only draw so fast, and the voice acting (which is usually done first in animation) was only completed a few months ago.

When it drops, Revolution will most likely come out all at once. That was original plan for Revelation, but COVID-19 had a massive snarl effect on the final production effort of the last few episodes, so they were like three weeks over time on their planned release date and faced two equally lovely options: push the first five episodes out because they were 100% done and get the rest out later, or wait the three weeks it would have taken to get the remaining episodes from 95% done to 100% done and run the risk of overcrowding the CGI kids show's debut as well.

Netflix chose the latter, which led in part to a lot of the controversy from people who never even watched the show in the first place and people who did watch the show but were profoundly media illiterate and assumed that was the end of the story instead of just part 1 of 2 (which, to be fair, Netflix did a real lovely job of advertising). Hopefully Netflix will have learned its lesson and NOT do that this time, but then again their upper echelons are some really dense motherfuckers who love making boneheaded decisions, so we'll see.

Right now a possible third season of MotU:R is at "Kevin Smith running his mouth at Comic-Con" status. But a dude like Kevin Smith doesn't just blurt poo poo like

You can probably if you really think about it, figure out what a possible third season be called, based on those two titles.”

out unless he's fairly certain it's almost a done deal. And given that Ted Biaselli is a giant gently caress off MotU nerd with his thumb on the scale at Netflix for the franchise, it seems like a very strong possibility at this point. Especially considering that after Part 2 of Revelation dropped Kevin was similarly like "Man, I have so much awesome stuff planned for Season 2, I hope we really get one, wink wink."

To answer my own question it would appear so.

Season 3 spoilers: Hordak appears as a bat that takes Evil-Lyn away from the final battle. In the closing minutes of the finale, he reveals his true form to her, asking her to be the herald to the Horde. Earlier in the season, Evil-Lyn questioned why her inner self was connected to bats and here Hordak explains why...she's his daughter

CG Hordak is apparently voiced by Kevin Conroy (this season also gives us Wallace Shawn as the original Orko and Alan Oppenheimer as King Greyskull)

Overall that was a big step up from the second season and I highly recommend checking it out

Personally speaking, I'm fine with this recast. I thought SMG's Teela was really flat compared to the rest of the voice cast, and replacing her with Melissa Benoist is a good choice because 1) Melissa Benoist rules, and 2) it makes for a funny gag of Adam and Teela being played by a husband and wife couple in real life :3:
