while i agree with this, it's like "how is online abuse real just log off hahaha". as in the way phones and other smart devices are just so common and their (over)use is being fueled by every psychological gamifying addiction trick in the book. dollars to donuts people will be checking their work e-mail and podcasts while hiking anyway

the solution probably is not letting people die due to lack of cell phone coverage though

I do not want emoji on my computer, and I hate Unicode. I also think that bitmap fonts are less fuzzy, and can be better at the proper size.
I write software avoiding Unicode as much as possible; if you need international text then you can specify which code page numbers to use. But, that still would be possibility of text directions, Chinese/Japanese (without Han unification), etc, but using a simpler way.
(Even, this is as someone writing a game engine, I add possibility to specify code page numbers, and use fonts for those code pages. Currently only 8-bit characters but in future possibly also EUC (and/or other multibyte character sets) so that Chinese/Japanese text, etc is also possible.)
GTK is terrible (I prefer Xaw). Use of Unicode is one problem, but then although there is a menu to insert Unicode control characters, they are not visible even while editing (making it difficult to edit), and I also do not like the use of kerning during editing.

What's the CPP? You mean CCP, Chinese Communist Party? And it's fascism at the same time?
Like if I capture Osama bin Laden alive and take him to a camp in eg Morocco to make him pay for his sins, I can't ask him to do ten push-ups? Like he designs the murder of 2,988 people and I can't squeeze 10 push-ups out of him?
Him in particular. The specific unique Wahhabi who committed the terrorism, like he matches the videos he released claiming responsibility, him. Ten pushups?
There has to be integrity.

There's the racial component as well.
For instance Spaniards (ethnic Visigoths) have near-total immunity to bad pork, whereas Jews (Jewish Diaspora, ethnic Jews) are very vulnerable.
Think of it this way: if there was a public service announcement by the early Jews, where would they write it down?

daniel-cussen 3 months ago [flagged] [dead] | parent | context | favorite | on: Knitters got knotted in a purity spiral (2020)

In the coming days I'll announce something. But I'll announce something else now. I can't keep modifying my behavior in response to threats of accusations of bigotry. Maybe a bit, I won't go trying to trigger anybody's sensitivities for the sake of it like I sometimes see[1]. There's no need for that. But if there somehow is a need for that for unforeseeable reasons, that's different.
So in particular if you build a theater called the "Daniel Cussen says a Forbidden Word Theater" and put out advertising saying "Does Daniel Cussen really say the Forbidden Word! Gasp!" and then you sell tickets to thousands of people, and without my knowledge you set up the logistics so I would appear on stage at the moment it started, I won't make people ask for their money back.
I'll just say the forbidden word. I'm not because you haven't built the theater, made the ads, sold the merch, auctioned the tickets. You haven't done that. But if you push me that far, sure. Freedom of speech. It's a word, and I know how to talk, so I can say it.
I just may not say it, that's different, I can sense society's repulsion to it. When enough people subscribe to that, in effect you may not say it. I accept the culture around me. Get fired from your job and all the rest.[2]
That's happened to me I think three times, blacks trying to manipulate me into saying the forbidden word, even calling me that forbidden word personally SO THAT I say it back to them as anyone would reflect any insult SO THAT it counts as fighting words SO THAT they can justify fighting me, but...
Nah, it's just too easy. Too easy for them. A black comedian talked about this, talking about a situation how he was trying to figure out how to get a would-be opponent who was angering him to say the forbidden word, because "then [he gets] a gold star." Like in Mario Bros, invincible. Total moral authority. But automatically? When it's so manipulative!
And any slur for that matter. Well they're all different, there's nuance.
But you can call Daniel Cussen "el Gringo" anytime.[3]
.
.
.
[1] Like there's times I hate it, there's just no justification for it, like just saying slurs for the love of saying a slur. It's gross. I stopped a group of young men (not white or black) dropping n-grenades repeatedly and loud. It was just over ten years ago in Tenderloin, SF. A black woman noticeably complained, like talked about it louder and drew attention to it, she visibly wanted it to stop. So I went to their table, three men three women, said "you don't have to use that word, to be cool." And that was it.
[2] I felt super threatened by the prospect of accidentally saying the forbidden word, when I had just matriculated at Stanford. The level of political-correct threat! Your whole life falls apart, and in fact the college counselor warned me, you use it once and you might as well have gone to community college. So I took measures, like checking out Uncle Tom's Cabin, which made the fear worse, lots of slurs, couldn't read past page 40 I think. Telling people not to call me a gringo because it's offensive, nobody changed their words.
And later, telling the people around me a month in advance to stop using that forbidden word around me, ever. Chile is a different culture different norms and racial politics, but I just didn't want to be at risk of uttering it in California.
At Stanford. I think you get expelled, for sure they threaten to expel you, even if you can stay it counts as fighting words on campus so there might be a fight, and then you get ostracized hardcore, I think the profs treat you worse too, everyone, just incredible. Also you have to "admit" psychological or psychiatric abnormality, seek treatment and go to "group therapy", false confessions are expected...or like back then they were big on bipolarity diagnostics (big pharma multi-level marketing scam), that was one, getting poisoned with Valproic Acid. Happened to me in a different way. But I think I saw one guy...two guys? Blacked out memories. Their life got hosed up really badly. I got lynched and even I was happy I at least didn't say the forbidden word. Oh wait the blacked out memories? The amnesia is fading! That was me a little bit! Yeah I at one point said something...did I say the forbidden word in 2009? You know what, too many layers of amnestic drugs to tell for sure. These memories got erased like a Hard Disk Drive gets erased by macOS, multiple layers of deletion, I'm thankful to remember my name.
Back to my point, it was worse for me because I found I perceive time very differently than most people, under-clocked most of the time, textbook Attention Deficit Disorder. Didn't know time passes faster for me normally, including slower reflexes. Like 5Hz versus 7Hz for most people. So forbidding a word like that might as well be forbidding the j sound for you, it's that easy for it to slip. Easier to provoke and manipulate. Easier to put words in my mouth. The injustice against racial minorities ends where the injustice against psychiatric minorities begins.
[3] This is what people call me here and I am 1 fine with it. Saying I'm 100% fine with it implies that I'm counting something up to a hundred, which I am not, I'm just 1 fine with it. No margin of error. But there's a limit. If you add something to the word "gringo" to make it derogatory, which is how it works in Spanish, that's different. If you said that to me in person you'd be picking a fight. It's not like English with slurs, you have to say a demonym, for instance "marciano" (Martian, to use as an example without offending any current person) and then say they're inferior with other words, like "de mierda" for a classic example. What that sounds like is "marcianos de mierda", that's offensive. You may not say that to a real Martian.

It's actually insane though. It doesn't work that way in other countries, many of which have vastly better payment systems. It's just one of the many ways things in the US that are completely backwards.

And they idea that this type of fraud doesn't actually happen in practice is just completely false, too.

The person who posted that Ask HN thread is actually completely right and everyone who is saying otherwise is wrong and effectively (intentionally or otherwise) is taking an insular attitude that because that's the broken way things work in the US it must be fine because, hey, the US is the greatest country in the world, right?

Europe mostly works with push transfers, but there are also SEPA direct debit mandates, which are similar to the horrible US pull system. I'm not sure if they are really used outside Germany (I only learned of them when we had to implement payment stuff in Germany.)

They give huge protections to the holder of the account. You can reverse/refund your payment no questions asked for 13 months. So the person receiving the money is more likely to be scammed. Most online stores don't offer the option for that reason.

There's really no reason for pull transactions to exist. Recurring payments can be set up with confirmable repeating push payments.

I used to watch porn basically daily. But then after finally deciding to stop watching porn, the idea of porn itself is downright off putting to me. I don’t even quite know how or why. It just is.
And I imagine it will be the same for others with AI generated porn.

SEPA mandates are available in most of Europe (EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway). In my experience, they're mostly used for recurring payments (utilities, transit passes, taxes). I'd never use one for sending money to an other individual or for a single payment, but I think it's more common for B2B stuff.

The Portuguese Can No Longer Afford To Live in Portugal

Come on, it's nowhere near dire - it's expensive yes, like just about every other capital city - Lisbon is still way cheaper than Paris or London.

This poorly written rambling rant of an article has some valid points but no insight.

I moved to Cascais near Lisbon 5 years ago because of Brexit and yes property has boomed, like in many other countries but money printing QE is not just a Portuguese phenomena.

10 Years ago Portugal was a basket case economy (following the financial crisis) with many talented people moving abroad - now it's the opposite it's the fastest growing economy in Europe and Talent is moving here in droves. Of course the Tax and Golden Visa incentives to attract people have pushed up property prices but they have also provided many benefits.

Portugal is not densely populated Like England or Holland, even here in Cascais you see lots of unbuilt land or derelict properties. A major problem is supply side because of their slow and burdensome bureaucracy - it took us 3 years to get planning permission on a derelict property we bought for investment and we had to involve 2 architects and 5 engineers to get all the necessary paperwork in order, it's insane. Their job protection mentality needs to change towards a more dynamic job creation mentality - they need to reform their labour laws urgently to unleash amazing potential here. This would quickly solve the problem of low local wages. Many companies would invest here because of the incredible quality of life: great infrastructure, low crime, lovely climate, beautiful sandy beaches, quality food, the list goes on.

I like that initially they said there wouldn't have been any black people there at that time and then when someone pointed out that that's irrelevant because, you know, the character is a fairy they pivoted to saying fairies need to be pale because pale is now ethereal or something.

What doesn’t make sense to me is why is Cloudflare harassed for providing an utility to some bad actors while other traditional providers aren’t?
Is Comcast getting any flak for providing internet to the KKK offices? Or their water provider? Is Netflix getting any complains for providing entertainment to terrorists? Or vodafone for mobile connectivity?
Why is it different for cloudflare?
