It seems my ~8 y/o Thompson DCM476 is dying, or something. It cycles like, once an hour and is a real headache. Nothing else seems to be wrong.
The exact same thing happened to me with the same modem and basically the same time period, and it turns out the AC adapter that it came with was dying and causing the power cycle. I replaced it with a different compatible adapter and the problem went away (but then upgraded to 1Gbps and had to switch to the CODA-45 anyway, :rip:)

Xplornet, via some local company, is rolling out fiber to my (rural) house, but they won't do the final little bit to take it from the road to my house until they've done all of the road work for an entire "area." It's been like 3 months since I saw them running the line by my road and signed up, and there hasn't been a peep from them. I sure wish they would hurry up. Going from 8/1mbps to 200/200 is gonna be real nice.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes, look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
Yeah,, the process where they have to apply to the CRTC for permission only applies to certain of their customers/services that are still under the tariff rules where the CRTC still dictates (or at least approves) the actual price allowed to be charged and terms of service (mostly local phone services in mostly rural areas) - for everyone else it's basically a signal of their plans but the lack of interim approval was, I guess, not going to stop them for the parts of their service/customer base where approval was not required.

I didn't read much of the coverage so IDK who, if anyone, noticed that part ahead of time.

My sister currently lives in the US and has exactly one broadband provider. It's somehow failed and it has stumped all of their techs so far.

So yeah, as shocking as it seems, it really can get worse than Canadian internet.

Complaining about taxes is just the Canadian Way. I'm more offended that he was earning $400,000 and hadn't looked into the myriad of ways to defer and pay less tax in Canada. Certainly no shortage of accountants here.

IIRC they (Rogers and anyone piggybacking on their last mile) have a burst speed that is considerably higher than the rated download speed on the lower tiers, it won't sustain for more than a minute or two though, usually

Yeah I'm aware of the burst, but it sustains when torrenting or downloading poo poo on Steam.

Bell seems to be offering fiber at 1.5G down 1G up for $60 a month (for 2 years) (Montréal)

This makes signing up for Satan pretty tempting. But the biggest gripe my wife has is poor service to international servers. Any rankings on peering or similar that's worth considering?

They're offering 3GB for $1 less than I'm paying for the 1.5GB now, but I'd need like $900 in new equipment to get any real use out of it.

When did this become possible?

$135 a month for two years and I could finally operate a moderately successful Morrowind mods site circa 2005 from a laptop in my bathroom without having to offload DLs to filefront or planetshack.

Fido on the other hand seems to know their market better and is willing to offer nintety times slower upload speeds and will re-up my fifty percent discount on 150/10 over cable for $42.50 for another twelve months painlessly via live chat.

So naturally I chose fido.

I upgrading to 3Gbs ( it was cheaper than staying at 1Gbs) and ebayed some x540’s from china to take advantage of it.

I absolutely know people who have home labs capable of ‘using’ 8gbs, though I doubt it would have any meaning outside a speed test.

Pretty sure the target market is rich people with big families who have a 2 idevices, a tv, and a computer/laptop for every person in the house. They don’t need it, but you can easily get them to buy it.
