I have deprecated "giving you five minutes of your time back" because it is indeed lovely as gently caress, instead i say "i''m done stealing your time five minutes early"

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
I’m surprised that was happenable

Let's make sure we're not robbing Peter to pay Paul here! Lets run this up the flagpole until the director is no longer out of pocket. It's important to see if this project any immediate synergies that will enable a network-effect.

oh boy the few times I've had to fill in running standup everyone always tells me "oh wow, that was fast and painless". The secret is to tell people to "table it" the instant they go off topic.

Yeah but you have to pay attention to be able to do this. I prefer to just wait until there is silence, then awkwardly move on to the next person hoping I didn’t just miss something.

the thing is that 90% of scrums are actually status meetings and its ok to acknowledge that.

Way back when we were in office and I was scrum master people could chat about something as long as it took me to write it on a post it note for parking lot, it was a nice visual cue to wrap it up that worked well

I have found the rush to table anything that isn't "FEATURE A, NO BLOCKERS! NEXT!" can be taken too far. Sometimes people take a minute or two to get around to mentioning things that affect more people. There's a nice midrange where people have more than a minute - I was at one place that literally handed off a little 1 minute hourglass egg timer thing and if you ran out of time you had to stop talking and give it to the next guy - and just letting some guy drone on endlessly about his adventures with xml validation.

I work with a pretty cool guy, but bless his heart he rambles on for far too long, I guess because he doesn't know how to end his turn - so he deflates more and more before perking up with a recap of what he said before which usually feedback loops into more rambling and if you don't cut him off at some polite point, it'll never stop.
