I was inspired by my Spotify top songs for the year, and the old punk thread hasn't been posted in for 5 months and I hate the op of it anyway, so, I'm starting a new one!
Here's the old thread for reference
https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3923902&pagenumber=1&perpage=40&userid=0#post504950080

My favorite punk band is probably Bad Religion. I just like their sound and the lyrics are always thought provoking. I liked their take on current (well, 2018) conservatives, The Kids Are Alt-Right:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hES9IBTPbcw

Blink 182 recently released a new one as well, Edging (lol) that's not bad:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MI3buZedOw

I think a lot of why I still listen to this stuff is nostalgia for my middle/high school years and it reminds me of stealing and later copying my older brother's CDs. It always made me feel cool. So what do you like about punk?

hell yeah OP, Bad Religion rule. Nofx have been my favourite band since I was a teenager. most of their albums since War on Errorism haven't been great though. I've managed to catch them live a few times which is tricky since they stopped coming to Scotland sometime in the 90's after a run in with some biker gang at a show.

It does make me feel old that the classic pop punk albums from that time by bands like Lagwagon, Millencolin, Bad Religion, NUFAN etc have all had 20 or 25th anniversaries recently.

Here is a nofx song for people to enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y60qjjs-vRw

Also as far as bands that still have it, A Wilhelm Scream have probably the most consistent discography of any band I listen to. They're like Propagandhi in that they only release an album every 4 or 5 years but it's always a banger.

lmao that is so accurate

i shamefully had a dragonforce/powermetal phase at about age 17 as well, but my real love will always be pop/skatepunk

a wilhelm scream were always really cool about helping smaller bands out as well. i used to be in a half decent local band and we played with them a few times. i knew loads of other small bands like us around the UK as well and most of them had played with them as well. seems like they always made sure to have a couple of local bands on their shows which can be surprisingly rare when bands come form overseas.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1, 2, and 3 beamed punk into millennials' brains, and there's an NME article about it. Here's a quote about "96 Quite Bitter Beings", the #4 song on my Spotify Wrapped this year.

NME posted:

A song so intrinsically linked to 1990s skate culture, in part thanks to MTV show Jackass, it is strange to think it took till the third Tony Hawk’s for it to appear on the soundtrack. That riff isn’t one you’ll be shaking off in a hurry – infectious, heavy, furiously good.

Anyway, The Offspring is my favorite band. I got Ignition for Christmas 1999, and I think it's kinda bitchin', I think it's kinda neeeeeat.

I saw a show with The Offspring headlining and Bad Religion was one of the headers, and it was sooooo awesome and I got a pick and everything :swoon:

You're so right about the lyrics too, and they're what I love most about "Drunk Sincerity", which is a super useful phrase. I've also used "I don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled" as an overwrought version of "I can't unsee that" in various conversations. Bad Religion is great.

One of the best concerts I've ever been to was The Living End headlining. They are so underrated. I remember taping this song off the radio. :corsair:

I think almost everyone I hung around with in the year 2000, if you were to hand them a guitar they could play that iconic riff.

There was also a ps1 game called ESPN X-Games Pro Boarder that had a great punk soundtrack. I remember putting the ps1 disc in my hifi and recording it onto a tape. I think that's what got me into Nofx originally.

journey into Kirk's unknown

Grimskunk got me into punk/metal as a kid growing up in Montreal. I'm guessing most people have no idea who they are so here's a bit of background stolen from wikipedia.

quote:

GrimSkunk is a rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with punk, rock, progressive and world music influences. Its style is self-described as "world punk"[1] It is regarded as being part of the foundation of the Quebec alternative scene, having influenced many young musicians and bands.

The band integrates many languages into its songs, such as French, English, Spanish, Greek and Persian. It has also integrated many styles of music, including punk rock, hardcore, reggae, progressive and psychedelic rock, ska, rap and world music.

Over the past 30 years they've put out a lot of music across a bunch of different styles which made choosing what to share here a bit more difficult but here goes,

From this album, Silverhead is great and Bach in The Moors of Mars is another favorite.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz95QSWwMQM
Here's the same track (don't hide), but live at foufs if you're into that sort of thing

Le gouvernement songe (translated: The government is considering) is half French/English calling out the government for being lying sacks of poo poo. Lyrics here if you're curious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq7YhrOHiWU

This song I linked below is a good example of how they blended styles slowly shifting from "world" music towards punk/metal as the song progresses. If you like it check out Mahmoud's Dream which is followed by more traditional tracks until you hit Ya Basta.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDbby2dmeys

I love these tracks but they probably move away from the spirit of the thread a bit,
Rooftop Killer
Overture in E Minor/Rigpa
Gormenghast

et pour finir en beauté, mange d'la marde.

e: changed some the songs to better fit the theme, and I'll do it again.

I love punk rock. Getting this cd (Propagandi, Less Talk, More Rock - 1996) in 10th grade in rural nowhere North Carolina was absolutely formative.

The Fat Music for Fat People vol III was the first cd I ever bought a second copy of because I wore out the first. Also, I think those were like 2 dollars or something so my broke rear end could afford to replace it.
