i read a satirical article once by coconut monkey about a fictional game called Gravy Trader and it is the hardest I've ever laughed at written word in my life; i wouldn't dare try to read it again because i'm sure its nowhere near as good as my memory of it but god drat it was funny as hell at the time

hell yeah. how good were those massive detailed ads with a whole computer stores catalog in the back pages. i used to pore over those

I remember there was an ad they ran in the back of like every issue with a big picture of a woman with a server rack in the background and the text said, "NOW THAT'S A GREAT RACK!" and I spent a lot of time as an 11-year old trying to figure out if there was a joke there and why the woman was so prominent.

There was also an ad for a dongle-less PCMCIA Ethernet card that had a picture of Michelangelo's David statue with the headline "BECAUSE THINGS THAT STICK OUT GET BUSTED" that at the time I thought MIGHT have been a penis joke but wasn't quite sure.

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?

Funny tech poo poo: paper magazines trying to figure out how to do multimedia: some reviews of hardware or how-tos sent on a CD-ROM with copies of the article and maybe movies / screen shares.

Apple’s develop magazine launched in 1990, came with a dual-format HFS/ProDOS CD-ROM and it was awesome—it was basically all the documentation, sample code, tech notes, and everything else you could ever ask for, all in the form of HyperCard stacks and DocViewer books that were basically equivalent to PDFs (my coworker for the past couple decades wrote DocViewer in the late 1980s)

it and MacAddict (with its cover CDs full of demos and new shareware and icons and Kaleidoscope themes) were about the only version of “magazines doing multimedia” that I think really worked

black Mesa both releasing and being a drat good game, as well as HL2VR finally seeing the light of day after like 7 years of delays has restored my faith in humanity (or at least the part of humanity that mods half life games).

HL2VR was started way back in the oculus DK1/2 days when it wasn’t much more advanced than a google cardboard and still used an Xbox one controller

god these guys had such a ridiculously permissive returns policy idk how they didn't go out of business sooner.

it was a no questions 14 day policy, so being 15/16 and having no actual responsibilities you could very easily buy a new game, complete it in 14 days and just take it back again.

I did this all the time lol

not surprising since david cage is a creepy pervert. there exists a video where he's showing off a scene from one of his previous games where you do qte bullshit to make a woman put on makeup and the whole time he was doing that creepy, mumbling porn commentator "mmmm, yeah. oh yeah, that's hot"

didn't gamestop buy them and close all of the eb games stores because in most cases it just meant that one company suddenly had two locations in every mall?

at one point the local mall had an eb games and gamestop, another gamestop in the strip mall across the street, and yet another gamestop in another strip mall less than 5 minutes away

it was like the joke where every corner at an intersection has a starbucks, except with video game stores

I want to say XP had the built in firewall, 98 and 95 did not, so it was a race against time to download what you needed to survive being online before you got popped.

95/98 was the era where a ton of ports and services were left accessible by default and the OS had minimal security anyway

2000/XP cleaned up a LOT of that stuff, but with XP in particular you got a lot of people still running it with no service packs 10+ years later

Shouldn't it be fine if the first place you went on a clean install was directly to malwarebytes' download page or whatever

Just don't browse until you have some sort of antivirus installed.

No, because the system had ports open by default for things that were wormable. Just being connected to the Internet was risky. The updates for 98 would disable their being on by default, but if you didn't have a firewall it was a race against time to pull the necessary updates and then disconnect.

"but couldn't you just get a copy of an install from someone" this is the era of CompUSA and firewalls being $50 in the box. "Malwarebytes or whatever" didn't yet exist in a free form, you bought a copy of McAffee from the local store and installed it, because being online was still uncommon.

I’m pretty sure XP SP1 is when a built in firewall came with the OS.

which made me remember before that the hot thing to have was ZoneAlarm
