i am likin the beat against the drone and also the syncopated arp in the background

what was your approach to arranging this? it sounds like the usual “write 4 bars of every voice against each together and mute/unmute over time” trick but boy am i bad at that part lol

yeah kinda, i chose a pretty simple chord progression to base everything on, then built various arps and patterns, muting some while i created others, etc. same with the drum patterns

what i usually do after i think everything is ready to arrange, i bounce the patterns from their player devices to their corresponding midi tracks, then set all that aside and created droney things and noises for the intro, then started to build up the track by just moving blocks back and forth until they made sense in a progression, working towards building up energy to the end of the track. once everything was laid out i added fx and fills and transitions last

also i listened to nothing but psytrance for like a week so i had a good idea of how i wanted to structure everything

i like it, one thing i would recommend is turning down the velocity of the piano so that it doesn't sound so harsh, and using more reverb/pedal to smooth it out a bit

here's a random thing i've been working on for the last week

tyty!!! i wasn’t sure how to expand on it so I kinda left it at that. i already think the low hand needs work, something about it just seems flat and awkward to me. but it is certainly pretty overall and I think it’s an example of my potential (such that it is)!! right :ohdear:

killhamster posted:

yeah that might be the kicker, knowing what structure you want. all my stuff is near structureless which is not a good thing

I’d need a lot more reverb and pad patches if I tried to made this full-on dungeon synth :v: but honestly that’s not far out of the question given the only thing I went in with was “piano in G Dorian -> Aeolian”

Woolwich Bagnet posted:

lol yeah i would need to rerecord the velocities to make it usable, as-is it’s just the same 2 bars of velocity over and over and the current velocity sucks peñor. but if I wanted gorgeous dynamic piano I’d have it recorded live so v:v:v

I'm not exactly an aficionado of bass tone, but I've been decently pleased with the result of hooking up this 5 string to this Joyo Mesa Boogie clone pedal:

Gotta dial in the EQ just right but it works alright for my practice needs. Got it running into my mixer so I can just adjust the gain/volume there for monitoring.

I got an EMagic AMT8 on eBay and it turns out Apple still provides a current driver and Logic still supports it

so now I have an 8-in, 8-out MIDI interface that I can use with literally any Mac from the original Mac 128 to the latest M2-based Mac

this sounds good. maybe it sounds *too* good on account of all your high quality string sounds. but i think i would not find this out of place in a computer game soundtrack

do you sequence everything nicely quantized on the grid, or do you also try some more humanized crescendos-diminuendos which happen in "real" classifal music?

you don't have to have goals or something to accomplish with music or any creative art, it's completely enough if you are enjoying yourself while you are doing it! david lynch said this as well

the guy has a point with repetitions, but on the other hand there is the concept of ostinato, which is a musical thing where you repeat something and it psychologically becomes something different (i don't know how to explain this well)

the strings i use for solo violin/cello are very good and natural sounding depending on the play style selected. i use virharmonics pretty much exclusively now for those solo instruments, although their price reflects their quality.

they simulate bow stroke and i use key switches when needed to switch between up and down stroke.

a lot of work for them goes in to setting an appropriate velocity for the note, the length of note (some are quantized, but a lot are not to get a more natural ending to a phrase) and when to use vibrato/ non vibrato. at lower velocities they tend to have a natural crescendo / diminuendo based on the progression of the bow across the strings. they also have different selectable play styles which are more/less aggressive or have more/less vibrato.

they're releasing a viola this year which i'm looking forward to, and hopefully a bass after that.

i agree with this. i don't usually have a goal when i start something except maybe 'this would sound neat/i want this kind of tone for this.' other times i just start noodling around on a keyboard or throwing down semi-random notes, listening to them, then refining them to make them sound better to me, then doing that again.

yeah repetitions aren't bad. in a lot of music there's a constant repeat throughout it, but the perception of it changes based on whatever else is going on. i've certainly listened to stuff and thought dang that was a cool key change in the repetition only to go back and listen again and realize it never actually changed.

I've been trying to work more with my hardware, but it seems like whenever I actually feel like working with it, that's when Lola is feeling super affectionate, and walks all over everything while I'm trying to work on it!! If I shut the door, she sits right outside the door and protests loudly.

Anyways, I just did this. When I was recording the input from the sq-64, I accidentally had the drum track receive all midi, but it ended up sounding kinda cool, so I kept it.

After getting a little time to sit down with the 1010music Blackbox and gently caress around with it: holy poo poo this is suuuuuch a better interface for setting up samples. Think tomorrow I'm going to sit down and figure out how to set up the Electribe to run samples from the Blackbox out to it, run them through the Electribe's FX and resample what I get. Should be able to get some pretty gnarly drum sounds that way.

EDIT: Wait it has automatic multisample recording of instruments through generating it's own midi/cv? Hooooly poo poo this thing is dope

yeah I had a really stupid idea to do a series of things with nu metal songs and really twist them and change them up and it’s somehow kind of worked so far. the trick seems to be taking so far a departure from the source material that you’re not constrained by the original genre
