In fact I'll bet doing lines contributed heavily to the current court case

He’s probably going to lose his guns, but otherwise- there is not gonna be any prison time for Roiland, unless the poo poo is grievous, and grievous in the world of DV usually doesn’t end up being prosecuted solely as DV. Worst case is a lot of community service, probation, and a fine.

Technically the worst case is prison time, but kind of like how most murderers don’t get the Death Penalty, most abusers don’t get prison. Especially so for wealthy first timers.

Hollywood Reporter have a "heres the meltdown" story. It claims that Roiland and Harmon haven't been on speaking terms for a while.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/justin-roiland-animation-empire-implosion-rick-and-morty-1235319366/

quote:

At some point during the third season of Rick and Morty, multiple sources say Roiland simply stopped showing up — and when he did turn up in the Burbank offices, he’d typically avoid the writers room. In fact, Roiland’s colleagues often knew he was there only because they could hear his dogs. Or they’d hear his remote-control toy car, which had a microphone on top of it, zooming around the office. At least once, Roiland sent it into the writers room, says a source. “You wouldn’t have seen him in weeks, and then you’d see the car come in, which was insane.” Roiland would make exceptions to bring through famous fans, of which Rick and Morty has legions; at various points, his visitors included Kanye West, the comedians on Impractical Jokers and porn star Riley Reid, who gifted the room a succulent.

By that time, Roiland had a girlfriend, who became a fiancée, and he would talk openly about their penchant for threesomes. “It was something we just ignored because it was disgusting,” says an insider. Multiple sources say it was also during that period that Roiland sent a female employee a “really creepy” text, late at night, requesting that she come to his home (they declined to name the staffer). “She didn’t want to run it up the flagpole,” says one of the sources, “and then it was just this really hosed-up, awkward thing.”

Story has the ring of truth to it, aside from everyone frantically saying they've been distant from Roiland for ages (although that's source bias).

Harmon and Roiland falling out in Season 3 because that is both where the show takes a big shift away from Roiland nonsense stories and towards Harmon stories-about-family. Also a much greater emphasis on the rest of the family and episodes resting on other voice actors.

Finally, this is a period where Harmon is Getting His poo poo Together in terms of his personal life and reassessing a friendship with someone like Roiland is consistent with that.

If it wasn't for the charges and creepy DMs no one would care and The Hollywood Reporter wouldn't have ran the story, this would have come out years after the show ended on some podcast. He secured main voice roles on Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites, he was a position of leverage. He was the (co)creator voice lead, if he leaves absent a reason it is panic stations. Every little thing in both shows would be magnified as the show going off rails.

As said in this thread, use your position of leverage to be a lazy goof with millions of dollars and fans, lots of people here would probably do it just don't do the bad poo poo.

It’s clear from the article that the person who he harassed didn’t want it to get out in fear of it tanking the job or something like that.

So it was kept on the DL out of fear.

my feel is that it's different - domestic violence charges would have been known about for years and are kind of limited pending investigation and possible prosecution. it's also tricky to fire someone for cause on pending charges, because they could come back on you later if the charges are dismissed or acquitted

when the news of the charges broke, this also gave the women and girls he harassed enough visibility to start releasing horrible texts he had sent them. that's a different ball of wax because charges are limited in scope and go through a legal process with a presumption of innocence. but if one person says "hey, here's a chatlog he sent me that is extremely gross" and then a second person says "i also have a chatlog" and then a third person, and then a fourth, and then... that'll prompt the powers that be to cut their losses and cut this guy loose before the dozenth person shows up with an extremely gross chatlog
