Horror games are really funny with friends when you're the type of person who rarely gets scared by media. I think PT was really the only thing that hosed my rear end up badly, otherwise I play survival horror games and just sort of run past everything without giving a poo poo. It's always best when I get to play them with friends and watch them being super tentative and terrified about everything and blowing like 15 rounds on a zombie in Resident Evil because they're too freaked out to play well lol.

ghosts are real, but their essence is dissipated by wifi and cellphone signals, so you only get hauntings in areas with low coverage, which are getting fewer and further between. but those also tend to be areas with low populations, meaning there's less chance of there even being enough dead people to haunt, and on top of that, well, less people to see them if they do
your best bet in america is something like a coalmine or an abandoned town built around a now-closed factory or mill, places of that nature, where life is slow and quiet enough that the echoes of forgotten tragedies may still linger

I think we need to find the prime haunting location where all of these converge, I’ll set up my battle station there and wait for a good haunting so I can finally get SA back on track

I legit think ghost hunting reality shows probably killed it for a lot of people because they're so insanely loving stupid and bad. Nothing will destroy the mystique of urban mythology more than people commercializing it.

One kid at my school followed up on a bet that he'd spend a night in the local cemetery (which was reputed to be haunted) and came back disappointed saying he saw nothing there. He still made out with like 10 bux worth at the then exchange rate, though.

we had a children’s home that used to be a boarding school and eventually stopped being used in the 70s that sort of lay semi-abandoned by the owner. It was in a weird spot because it was right across the cemetery and right next to the jail so you’d get a perfect storm of bored teenagers daring each other to do stupid poo poo

I used to be in a bunch of different bands and one of them was a black metal band where the guy was legitimately obsessed with satanism and was convinced that there was Wickede Aura going on at the children’s home, so he broke into it and then stayed overnight, but then he had really bad asthma and had to go to the hospital for a few days because he breathed in a lot of asbestos or something and it really messed with his allergies

it was pretty tough to take him seriously with his corpse paint after that

At least you were able to take him seriously with his corpse paint for a little while before that happened.

The Something Awful Ghost Story Threads were one of the big things that kept me coming to the site. The Tar Lady, Drain Lady and Wireman were great.

Modern internet stories seem to focus more on overexplaining the ghost and how it works, instead of letting an atmosphere of dread build. The old ones only briefly described the actual ghost if it ever actually showed up at all.

For example, the Ted the Caver story really worked because of the mystery it presented. The original ending left the whole thing open ended and never showed what was happening to the protagonists. Then later on someone "fixes" it by bringing in a mystical Native dude to thwart a monster and explain its origins.

I also really liked the original stories by 50 Foot Ant, when it was mostly plausible "weird old base, cabin fever and isolation".

Same, and I do agree with the over explaining now. Maybe we’ve just culturally moved on cuz even the spooky games now are all “walk around until the monster sees you and then chases after you” rather than the slow buildup of dread like silent hill

It is this. That zac baggins dude...gently caress me dead that guy makes me look like some kinda high class socialite. He cant go five minutes without embarrassing himself and everyone watching that show.

Also: I will let you in on a little secret that we in the ghost hunting business call "The Great UnBoo'ening". Basically, ghosts figured out how to get on the internet and they just watch porn all the time. They may have unfinished business in the human world, but in the online world they are finishing over and over.

A lot of people engage with content nowadays obliquely. They'll watch a video about a piece of content or an internet phenomenom, but they won't actually engage with the content itself. There's probably a fuckton of people who only know about that Ben Drowned poo poo that popped off a few years back through watching videos explaining it but didn't read or look at the subject matter themselves.

This kind of made sense when it was just about older, outdated internet trends and urban legends, but now someone tries to make some viral spooky sensation and within a day the video explaining it has twice as many views.

I don't get it, it's weird as hell.

Oh, you know what it is. It's being taught instead of learning.

Which transfers to being told, instead of being sold.

So a STORY, pick a format, can just move from scene to scene and you go Yes, this is the logical path I would have chose too!

Rather than...brane

There is a lot of good stuff and there is a ton of "x series explained" that is often times longer than the actual series.

When I watched "This House Has People In It Explained" I was like whoah wow that's an actually useful video but that feeling is so few and far between

yeah it feels like horror kind of takes on a “podcast” feel now with true crime poo poo, a low monotone speaking voice, “to this day, we still don’t know how/why/where X” rear end storylines, and stock x files type beats

The “lake city quiet pills” or whatever is a really good example of this, to your point I watched an “explained” video on it before even knowing what it was about
