it might also have to do with blended/divorced families being much more common now, so you have a lot of horny teenagers suddenly living with unrelated people of similar age and the opposite sex, or dad remarrying and getting a new 'mom' who is barely older than they are like the stepmom in bill & ted

being able to choose an appearance and/or gender presentation that is substantially different from the physical body you're stuck in irl is one of the main real appeals to participating in virtual worlds

facebook wants a metaverse that is an extension of the real world into a virtual space, from how people look to how corporations and advertisers get to shape the appearance and physicality of public spaces

in my opinion this is fundamentally wrongheaded and unworkable premise from the perspective of most prospective users, and once again reflects facebook's utter inability to grasp the concept of creative self-expression

its really funny that zuck took this concept and made a soulless avatar that looks almost exactly like him irl, just without legs

because then everyone would know how short he is. even children

you can have customized appearance stuff that doesn't cater to anime pedophiles or anime zoophiles. facebook just goes too far into the direction of "safe", but there is a middle ground.

it depends, I have a bunch of people who signed up with ridiculous names in the first place and now are afraid to change them and I think most of the marginalized folks who were getting mass reported are long gone from there

Youtubers are kind of doing this. Not as efficiently as a website or ad run, but there's a lot of them making tons of adjustments constantly to come up with a more popular combination.

Gothamchess comes to mind. He's constantly making minor optimizations to his format. At the end of the day, he's covering the same chess content as anyone else but he's snowballing in popularity to a ridiculous degree due in part to constantly optimizing.

I'd guess it's a few things:
1. thinking it needs to scale up to having 10 thousand people in the environment [before they have a consistent 10]
2. that whole company has like an anti-aesthetic and lack of personality, just mild blue and a few icons is their whole visual brand. the avatar of the ceo and flag bearer for the whole initiative looks like a placeholder npc in a wii game cropped off at the waist
3. if you want to have good environments you need to hire actual artists and designers who work on existing games and I'd guess very few of them went to :airquote: good schools or appreciate the awesome super detailed feedback on their work from those people who did go to stanford

A few of my former coworkers jumped ship to AWS. Mostly sales/pre-sales folks, though. I should probably check in with them to see what’s up. Definitely glad to be in my company’s consulting division right now. I know exactly how much money they’re making off me, and I’ve already got the contracts and work lined up through the end of the year. Now, after that…
