I’m nearing the end of the first season with someone that’s never seen the show before and she keeps asking me “Why does nobody talk about how funny this is?” And I never noticed until she said it. Like here in this thread we bring up lines and scenes all the time. But when you see articles and think pieces about the show, it’s as though they’re afraid to call it anything but a drama, and rarely mention that it’s responsible for some of the funniest scenes in television history.

Also, her favorite character so far is Christopher. So this is going to be interesting.

I just want to smile. Just once. I'd like to just, one time, go to Disney World and smile like the other boys and girls.
Tony: “Thanks for coming down.”
Chief: “I had business in Manhattan anyway..”
Artie: “Uh oh. Not again.”

the way it manages to be both dramatic, emotional and really funny all at once is what makes it so great

mad men managed to keep this balance, too

My favorite instance of Sopranos being funnier than it has any right to be is the (genuinely emotionally heavy and well-done but hard-to-watch) scene where Adriana reveals her secret to Christopher, and in the post-argument fantasizing they slip in "I could write my memoirs!"

There's no reason why such a dryly funny line like that should be in a scene so dark, and yet it does, and feels honest to the scene. just art

We call that the Simpsons effect. Its unreal how many things evoke the Simpsons to me in daily life. Here's an even weirder one: we have Eddie Bauer uniforms at work, and whenever I see the logo (also happens at Costco often), in my mind I break into Tupac's Hit em Up because the brand is mentioned in the song.

I been wantin to see a honkey dance.
A woman I work with has been watching for the first time she told me she's on the last season so she's been rationing episodes now. I asked her like three times if she was on the last season and she kept saying yes so I asked her what she thought of Adriana's death and she just looked at me like I had two heads.

Turns out she was only up to the first episode of season 5 Two Tonys. Sorry lady but I really tried
