i'd like to think that the people that come up with these bizarre spy devices are just the most chaste, boring human beings imaginable, so the thought doesn't even cross their mind that there's things people do that they might not want constantly recorded

apparently memory holed by Amazon because lol

shamefully I actually have something like this in my house

…it’s called a scuttle robot. it’s a demonstrator for running ROS on embedded boards (eg a rpi) and sensors (stereo vision or lidar).

"That isn't the appropriate trash receptacle."
amazon is proud to announce the upskirt 2 million, an automated robot specifically designed for livestreaming compromising video of the nether regions of everyone in your home to be stored in perpetuity on amazon servers

it can do lots of useful things like
  • set kitchen timers
  • tell you the weather
  • play a song, if it recognizes the words you said and the song is in our database

that's it, actually

all yours for a mere thousand dollars

the people who come up with the idea are manchildren who miss mommy doing everything for them and want Rosie from The Jetsons as a replacement (or whatever the modern equivalent is). they aren't worried about being spied on at home because they spend 14hrs a day at the tech major's campus then code at home for 2hrs.

the managers and executives that green light it are the sociopaths.

I would pay a lot for Rosie the robot to clean my house, bathrooms, and other stuff, tho, instead of me.

you've described all labor-saving devices, except you've done it in the most snide and derisive way possible. like, you aren't _wrong_ about people wanting to have everything taken care of for them, but...that's pretty much all of humanity, and always has been. i'm imagining you yelling at the 'manchildren' buying premade food in ancient rome

I read some quote that pointed out that no one wants to be the guy in the meeting pointing out all the sick poo poo that could happen with tech. If I recall the article was about Apple air play and how people kept accidentally streaming porn to the living room tv, stuff like that.

PMs don’t wanna hear about sad or perverse use cases they only want to imagine happy consumers using whatever to talk to friends. Another example of a “why didn’t they think of that use case”: a this day in history feature showing you pictures of children that have passed away, or exes, etc etc

yeah that's why it's funny. most of the other examples had legit use cases but also very bad use cases that the creators didn't consider. maybe they were sociopaths who didn't care, but it's also plausible they just weren't worldly or depraved enough to think of them

not so with the robot. 100% of its functionality is sending random pictures of your house to amazon. it never did anything else that might make that worthwhile. that was the entire concept from start to finish

at least the facebook portal also did video chat

I've read in a couple places that essentially the more privileged the person the more likely they are to only consider optimist use cases. Turns out women and minorities are seemingly more sensitive to negarive externalities or actual malicious use.
