and yeah can’t forget I do actually have a 50mm f/1.8 nifty fifty which tbf does a good job despite being the cheapest lens on the planet (this may not be true, but it surely is the best value lens)

so if I am forced at gunpoint to do a group shot or something I could pull it off

I felt a bit let down by the lack of low light capability of my camera at the gig. I took some longer exposures at low iso and they were ok but I didn’t have the freedom to take normal photos. and tbf it was literally moonlight so it’s entirely reasonable to not be able to take normal photos so perhaps I shouldn’t be disappointed anyway

I know the sonys are the kings of low light. this is the first time i’ve really considered if changing systems would be worth it. I love my canon in every other way though

-> some l-system crap ->
https://us.ricoh-imaging.com/ricoh-announces-pentax-k-3-mark-iii-monochrome-digital-slr-camera/

PARSIPPANY, NJ, April 12, 2023 — Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced the PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome camera, exclusively designed to capture black-and-white images. The only monochrome-specific digital SLR camera currently on the market, it captures high-resolution images rich in gradation, enabling users to express a distinct view of the color-rich world in high-quality black-and-white images.

“The concept of a monochrome-specific digital SLR camera attracted a great deal of attention and interest from photographers who participated in an online fan event held in November 2021,” said Ken Curry, president, Ricoh Imaging Americas. “PENTAX has since conducted extensive research on the development of a commercial product based on this concept and we’re excited to announce it today.”

The new model’s design is based on the PENTAX K-3 Mark III — the flagship model of PENTAX’s APS-C-format series that integrates remarkable imaging performance and a host of advanced features in a compact, durable body — while totally redesigning and optimizing the imaging characteristics by adding a new, monochrome-specific image sensor with approximately 25.73 effective megapixels. A typical color image sensor composes a black-and-white image by converting the color data to monochrome. This new custom sensor does not have to convert the any data because it can reflect the brightness obtained by each pixel in the image, thus producing extra-fine sharpness in images that only the monochrome-specific sensor can deliver.

The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome features three Custom Image modes exclusively designed for black-and-white photography to provide distinctive finishing touches. In addition to Standard mode, it offers Hard mode to produce high-contrast images and Soft mode to create high-key, low-contrast images. Each mode allows minute adjustment of parameters such as tone, key, contrast and sharpness so that users can personalize their images with the desired finishing touch.

The exterior design of the camera has also been customized to reflect its monochrome capabilities. Design features include white backlight illumination on the LCD data panel, “Monochrome” lettering printed on the upper-left shoulder of the back panel, a menu screen featuring a black-and-white visual scheme as default, and icons printed on buttons and switches across the camera’s exterior finished in three shades of gray.

The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome camera body will be available late April for the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $2,199.95.

i like the idea but that's a normal sensor resolution, imo they'd need to do something really cool like increasing pixel density to effectively triple resolution on the same size sensor to make it make sense at a price point like that. i don't understand camera internals enough to know if this makes sense but naively "you're sensing rgb, so now sense 3x as much greyscale" feels like it makes sense even though i doubt it actually does (like i'm guessing that you don't actually have r,g,b sensors next to each other, i imagine they're overlayed or smth)

also make it in EF

they missed the part where the appeal of black and white film photography is that it's cheap, and the development process is fun. this is dumb as hell

a colour camera works by having light sensors behind red, green, and blue filters (with 2x as many green sensors), so a monochrome camera effectively has more resolution, and more light than a regular bayer sensor

the regular k3 is like 1,700$, but you gotta remember, a monochrome camera is a specialist niche (i.e dentist hobby camera), and it's real competitor is the leica monochrom, which is more than twice the price of the pentax monochrome

hey folks, i see i got behind on this thread as a combination result of it being a busy stretch at work and also because we had some real distasteful weather for a long stretch. i had a lens acquisition thing last year and got hold of one of the manual-focus era 200mm f4 macros, just at/slightly past the tail end of butterfly season. i've taken it with me to the local botanic garden a couple of times this weekend and, drat, what a joy to use. any excuse to go appreciate things:

i also went and used a tele lens with a teleconverter for random birding for the first time since the film days... the march of technology is astounding. i almost can't believe how good tc design has gotten since the late-90s kenko 1.4 I have.

that said, i think my camera needs a CLA. the focus confirmation is getting kinda squirrely and it's beginning to interfere with getting through a walk. i've got a little rocket blower i've been traveling with, but the length of time i can go between dustings feels like it's decreasing. the camera body dates to 2015 and it's never been serviced; no idea how old my 300mm lens is, but it exhibited trouble with my practically brand new 31mm today too, and they use different focus motor types. fortunately, for the moment, the center point seems to be working great, which is the one that manual-focus lenses use for confirmation.

delightful

i like the kind of tonal whiplash of 'pretty sunset colors' and the dark of what's going on on the beach, plus the foreground blur helps pull on that tension a bit. presumably you were chanting '135' while framing?

thought this portrait had a bit of a painterly vibe to it.

thinking of getting a pro most filter like 1/8 which is subtle. probably go well with the style i’m trending toward. unfortunately for my wallet my lens takes 82mm dia and those filters aren’t cheap jesus
