After extensive market research, OpenFortune determined that the AI-driven platform produces never-before-written and more appealing fortunes, at an exponentially faster rate. This ensures that people are less likely to receive the same message as their dining companion and creates a more personalized fortune cookie experience. As a result, OpenFortune has decided to utilize ChatGPT for their fortune content.

lmao "market research", sure, definitely not "it's the hot new buzzword and maybe lets us fire some people"

the idea that every single cookie will have a unique message though means that there is zero chance that anyone will be reviewing them before they go out which is excellent

I guess from the point of view of the restaurant, rather then having to pay for fortune cookies, this way they get to be paid for giving out fortune cookies or something?

yep you nailed it. re: the restaurant's POV, yeah that's what i suspect but dont actually know what's going on. for all i know they're stockholders in the site or something lol

“We’re giving the device away for free, and the entire business model is supported by our advertising, data, and affiliate revenue streams,” says Telly founder and CEO Ilya Pozin, who previously cofounded the free streaming service Pluto TV.

[...]

The bottom panel also stays lit up when movies or TV shows are playing, albeit at a lower brightness than when you’re browsing around. That’s a non-negotiable part of the deal, though Telly hopes you’ll want access to the bottom screen more often than not.

“Even when your main screen is off, you can leave the bottom screen on, and it becomes the main device in your home,” Pozin says. “We believe that’s what a TV in 2023 should be.”

[...]

“We know where you live, what your income bracket is—obviously it’s all anonymized—but we know what car you’re driving. We know when your lease is up. We know where you shop. We know what your favorite sports teams are, et cetera,” Pozin says. Auto makers can then use that information to target people whose leases are coming due, while food delivery companies could show ads around dinnertime to people who often order in.

yeah. no destroying the ad components, no upstream ad blocking, and they have your credit card on file so they can hit you for the full cost of the TV if you try these things

it's a terrible product and short of the universe trending towards maximum perversity, it will die an ignominious death because you can buy tvs for nearly nothing that don't have those restrictions and the people who can't buy those don't have credit cards, and are worthless to advertisers anyways

it does feel like a plan hatched by somebody old enough to think of a flatscreen tv as an expensive luxury appliance

you can get huge tvs for a couple hundred bucks, or, even better, get a cheap digital projector for less than a hundred and point it at a wall. presto: an 8-foot-wide television

what the gently caress is the value of that market to advertisers?

from the cyber thread:

haveblue posted:

they did think of that. the terms of service requires you to:

quote:
(a) Use the Product as the primary television in Your household;

(b) Keep the Product connected to WiFi and internet; and

(c) Not use any software on Your WiFi network that with advertising blocking capability. [sic]

(d) Not make physical modifications to the Product or attach peripheral devices to the Product not expressly approved by Telly. Any attempt to open the Product’s enclosure will be deemed an unauthorized modification.

you also have to give them a credit card so they can charge it if you try to keep the TV after they catch you breaking these rules

that said, human ingenuity is unlimited and the TV's ability to verify whether photons from the ad screen are reaching eyeballs is limited
