thats a very microsoft use case, apple

anyway thats a funny joke by jobs but he also famously hated large phones and thats clearly not the way to success so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

anyway i figure even odds this is successful. it seems like they'll probably put out at least two versions based on past products. the question remains whether this is going to be an iphone mini (comparatively unsuccessful) or an apple watch (fine after 2 or 3 iterations)

i dunno, i think they'll sell a non-trivial amount no matter what, to be honest.

quote:

Apple knows this will take time. It initially hoped it could sell about 3 million units a year out of the gate, but it’s pared back those estimates to about 1 million, then to 900,000 units.

so i guess the question is: if they sell 900k of these a year, will they consider that a sufficient success to continue iterating? i honestly feel like if apple keeps developing on this they'll eventually have something that's worthwhile even if it's not in the beginning. a shocking amount of people buy new high-end iphones every year - we've completely normalized spending insane amounts of money on unnecessary high-end gadgets

tbh i think the harder goal will not be selling these at least in the beginning - it'll be motivating people to keep using them which is the problem all other vr headsets face

I buy a new high-end iPhone every year, and like most high-end iPhone havers, I am sure they are trading in/selling their old iPhone so the upgrade only costs $200 or so.

if thats the optimistic projection they probably expect to realistically sell a bit under that, probably 700-800k

i don't think they'll do that well. the other more established options are significantly cheaper and do similar numbers (or under). considering they've been working on it since 2015 i don't even see them recouping development costs for this

actually lets go all-in on the opposite, this is the start of societal acceptance of wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet with built-in AR/VR, noise cancellation, and air filtering

next comes the kryptonian waste filtering body suits

never interact with the "outside world" ever again

i’m like the only person that prefers audioshield to beat sabre

tho the latter got better when you could buy real music for it, i’m still not paying money for tracks i’ve bought ten other times or bothering with trying to get user created beat maps.

also i’ve told this story before but one ces a company really wanted me to try out their adult software in a vr headset

like first of all pass second of all i am not going to watch porn in public while you all stare at me???
