I've been having a wonderful time watching the World Cup qualifiers. I really wish Team China was playing since it's so entertaining to watch your preferred team demolish weak competition, and the actual tournament will be a lot more competitive (aside from Korea crushing everyone), but at least I can watch Team USA do it with the occasional appearance from Super.

Love to see the Spark boys bounce back after getting absolutely crushed by Infernal. Philly has been our kryptonite for a couple of years now, but if we can remain solidly in second place in APAC, we'll get to the playoffs and have a chance to make a run there. Also, yeah, the Valiant match yesterday was extremely fun.

So, OWL is about to be dead. Overwatch esports did exist before OWL, and looking around Twitter, it seems like at least some of the people believe this will actually be good for the scene. I got into esports due to the World Cup and then stayed because of OWL, so I'm really disappointed. Would've loved to see my Spark get a single stage championship, even.

I've seen several people like avast express confidence in the pro scene continuing next year before this article, so I expect owl will be replaced with a more traditional esports model it'd feel weird to go back to the org names after all these years. like how many shock fans will be lost if the team goes back to being called nrg, for example

According to Xerneas they'll be playing with five players and their manager as a sub for the rest of the season, and the team will take the six mil afterwards.

Yeah, there's no way the Chinese teams don't vote to kill the league. Which is kind of funny, since Dragons and Spark at least probably would've voted to keep it if the NetEase deal hadn't died. Avast has been saying it's a supermajority vote, so I think that would mean killing the league would take 13 aye votes (two-thirds of 19). The only team I've regularly seen projected as a no vote is Toronto, although Avast has mentioned any teams that went budget became profitable this season and might also vote no too. Still can't see a pathway to seven no votes. One other thing he speculated, which I think is more interesting and plausible, is that the OWL team will pitch something along the lines of "let's kill the league, but in exchange for this $6 mil, please stay involved in the next (significantly cheaper) phase of Overwatch esports." A pitch like that might be appealing to teams like Mayhem that have already established profitability.

I think that if there's a next step on Overwatch esports, it's one Blizzard won't be directly involved with in the near future. I'm still thinking about that person who said Blizzard is not prepared to run esports after this year's tournaments finish.
