Update on the Don Callis thing:

observer posted:

Don Callis attacked by fan following AAA Triplemania XXXI Tijuana
Callis is currently heading to San Diego for medical treatment following the assault.

Don Callis was assaulted by a fan following Saturday’s Triplemania XXXI event in Tijuana.

Bryan Alvarez is reporting that there was a post-show press conference where Kenny Omega was confronted by Don Callis, leading to an angle where Omega was attacked by Konosuke Takeshita, continuing their AEW feud. As security was breaking up the fight, that was when a fan attacked Callis from behind.

“Everything was an angle up to that point, but then a fan who was apparently upset about what Don had said to Kenny jumped Don from behind, ripped his suit, concussed his eardrum and busted open his mouth while he was trying to choke out Don from behind,” Alvarez said. “ Don was screaming profanities at the fan before he was pulled off, and was said to be livid afterwards.”

The only complaint I would have regarding the tag match is that it would've been just as good without the first ten minutes, I'd have been perfectly okay with the slow start if they were going to tease a one hour draw but as it stands the opening might've had a little more timekilling than necessary. An absolutely insane contest otherwise, I'm delighted that Jay and Juice have found their footing in AEW and I hope their stellar work last night leads to bigger things for both men down the road. (FTR of course put on a fantastic performance as well but their greatness in AEW was already well established.)

Uh... they did tease the draw? There was only like 2 minutes on the clock when Juice tapped. It wasn't literally 'ends at 59:58' but it was definitely meant to make you think it was ending on the draw)

Ouch. Nobody was paying attention since the entire focus was on Kenny. Doesn't help that it looks like there were a bunch of fans all around as is.

Having two minutes left on the clock when the final fall occurs doesn't feel like a proper tease to me, especially since they didn't make mention of the time after the timekeeper's call that happened at five minutes remaining. The ending would've been even hotter if Juice had been locked into the submission with, say, a minute remaining, if he fought like crazy to hang on while the last few seconds tick away.

Again, this is a tiny nitpick and I understand that it's insanely difficult to time things that perfectly. Just stood out to me as the length felt in a bit of a no man's land between a standard long match and a teased draw.

That commentary booth was not only miles better than Kevin and Nigel, but it was legit GOOD. Probably too much to hope that they keep Riccaboni in the booth going forward.

Only thing I would have changed is giving Liger a "Please welcome, Jushin Thunder Liger" announcement before the start of the Owen matches, just for a bit of that pop. Have him sit next to the trophy.

It was great seeing him though, and Ricky big-leaguing him is legitimately hilarious stuff.

Martha presenting the trophies was really sweet, too, possibly even better than last year. I think it really is incredible that she's heavily involved and able to honor Owen Hart on a massive stage on her own terms. No ties to the company that killed him. It's one of those little miracle moves that AEW pulled off and it warms the heart. Also Tony Khan keeps wearing funny hats, and that's a plus.

Liger is a bona fide legend; legitimately one of the greatest of all time.

Also, he's a big ol' goofball. I can see Liger laughing at when told what they wanted him to do, and immediately agreeing to it.

Also, some good news, bad news I saw online:

Good news: Ian Riccaboni will be doing the next four (?) Collisions due to Kevin Kelly being in Japan.

Bad news: Apparently he was offered the Collision role from the beginning, but turned it down, wanting to spend time with his family. He recommended Kelly for the role instead.

If they're taping ROH on the same night as Collision it doesn't seem like much more of a time committment. I suppose that might not always be the case though.

I'd prefer Ian/Nigel too but I don't hate the Kelly/Nigel team, possibly because I've watched plenty of NJPW shows with Kelly solo on commentary and I've become accustomed to his less stellar work.

Agree with part of this. Also think IR did no favours in commentary. Everything sounded amazing and important. Everything was the biggest thing ever. And IR was giving more OOohs and Aaaahs, and Ows! than me. Which just makes it all unbelievable.

If someone tells me literally every strike I see is the best strike ever (either literally or through their overacting) I stop believing them. Then I stop caring. Especially as I'm actually watching and can tell for myself.

I've watched a few ROHs and if he's the commentator there then I haven't noticed it. Maybe it just so happened that he started a new position on a poo poo hot match and it makes him come off like a weird fake salesman.

Also, I think the FTR/Jay-Juice match was good. But a lot of the start/first 30 minutes seemed superfluous. Not that it was slow, but it didn't take anything out of them. 40 minutes in they looked fresh as daisies, after doing some pretty impressive stuff. It took a weird faked doctor-inspection to show them looking tired. Then they looked fresh again five minutes later.

I know wrestling is fake, I've just never been so reminded of it. It's all carnival. And carnival is great if the illusion doesn't drop, which it did with the tag match and IR's commentary. And also probably watching the G1 today.
