a gtx 1060 still runs about $200+ these days. you're still talking about an extra $450 at the very least

it only costs $700 to play this videogame! I like alyx but it’s not something anyone outside the Gamer World gives a poo poo about

cool that the price keeps going up with every subsequent post, good solid argument there

but my point was that alyx is the killer app for vr, a genuinely great game and a unique experience you can't have any other way, and it's not that expensive to play (its target market will already have a fancy graphics card, you idiots) and yet even leet gamers aren't running out to buy vr headsets to play it.

this is why i think that even if there is a killer app for 3d tv, people won't buy it. killer apps aren't enough.

l33t gamerz did go out and buy vr headsets to play alyx, then they played it, realised there was never going to be another game with that level of care taken over it again and got rid of them

alyx is a fantastic game, and all you need is a computer with an ok graphics card and a $250 oculus headset, and vr still definitely has not taken off, so i doubt your hypothesis about a killer app for 3d tv

hla is a good game but it's also just a game from a beloved dead franchise, to have the reach i'm talking about you need something like visicalc that people who have never even thought about using the device before will see and want to buy into.

Can you really? When it came out I could run it just fine but by the time I did a major overhaul on my pc it barely worked. Though I suspect it was bound by my quad core

I dont know what you have to pay for a gtx1060 these days, but you can get a Rift S for $100. I know this because I just helped a friend find one on FB Marketplace

VR is still not "cheap", but its not like it was in the 20-teens where you needed a monster cutting-edge machine to even think about it.

A 6th-gen i5/i7 or thereabouts, a 1060 and a Rift S is not a gigantic ask, especially if you can also use that computer to play like 98% of all of the other PC games in existence

nobody wants 3D. its a dumb gimmick the movie industry pushes every few decades in response to competing trechnology. in the 50s it was to counter rising TV ownership, in the 80s it was home video, and in the 2010s it was streaming.

they will try again in ~2045 in response to the next thing, and it won't work then either

... I said boo-urns :(

Honestly, it's pretty hard to actually do well, since it involves thinking about 3D when filming, without deciding to do the stupid jump scare stuff of just blasting poo poo at the audience. The Martian did this pretty well iirc, so did Avatar. Cameron specifically filmed Avatar with the intention of people using 3D glasses, and it shows with how well it was done. The 3D stuff really enhanced without overwhelming the rest.

I do remember the lovely Beowulf movie having 3D in it, because one of the scenes had extremely large, pendulous breasts swing way back and forth towards and away from the audience while their owner scrubbed a table or something, which was a stupid goofy gimme of a bit, but it actually worked! Literally all I remember from that lovely movie.

All that said, I usually try to grab the 3D screening of a movie. I am the idiot here who actually enjoys it!

James Camerons Avatar is ugly, garish, and just a bad film. The jungle smurfs are gross, the plot is generic, and can anyone itt remeber a single cathcphrase or line of dialogue?

The most ambitious tech demo, but what a stinker of a movie.

Yeah, it's a dumb movie, but I wouldn't understate just how good it looked, especially at the time.

I mean Cameron's Avatar is also bad, boring and has so much CGI it should be treated as a cartoon

to the catchphrase part, i also can't remember one from dances with wolves :v:

the studio wanted a summer blockbuster and got it, but it didn't match the budding mcu format so it stands out as especially unmemorable

it reminds me of how dune '84 was positioned as the next star wars with toys etc. but avatar wasn't particularly bad or from a canonical source, so it had no fandom to prop it up over time

when i watch tv at home i want to also fiddle with my phone or a tablet, be able to see and eat from my snacks, see the cat, etc. 3d poo poo i have to wear for the "immersive experience" makes watching a show as much of a commitment as going to a.theater and if I had the time and energy for that tonight, I'd just... go to the theater.

nintendo memory-holed the virtual boy pretty hard, they didn't even reference it in another of their games until 2013 and you can count the number of callbacks since then on one hand.
