Tomorrow is NWSL's Decision Day, and this time the league decided to try the completely original and slightly unorthodox approach of "have every match kickoff at the same time", a departure from last year's "let's have 1 game played on Friday, a few on Saturday and Sunday then the last one be in Monday which by a fluke determined the last spot in the playoffs". Bold stuff.

Top 6 teams make the playoffs, with the first 2 seeds getting a bye in the first round, otherwise a straight knock tournament format. The first two seeds have already been claimed (San Diego and Portland), while two teams have already been eliminated (KC and Chicago), which leaves 8 teams fighting for the last 4 spots.

Games kickoff at 5pm EST / 2pm PST, all airing on Paramount+ or nwslsoccer.com internationally. Full list of playoff scenarios here.

North Carolina Courage @ Washington Spirit - Probably the best game to watch as a neutral...so watch this end 0-0 with less than 0.5 xG total because I said that.

Kansas City Current @ NY/NJ Gotham - This will be the Current's final game of the year, and they could help make sure it's Gotham's as well.

Houston Dash @ Orlando Pride - Houston pretty much need a meteor for them to make the playoffs. Marta would probably prefer her club season to go better than the World Cup did. Should be a fun one.

OL Reign @ Chicago Red Stars - A stoppable force (Reign can't score) vs. a moveable object (Chicago has a -19 GD...the next closest team is -6). Who will win? (Please be Reign :prayer:)

Portland Thorns @ Angel City - Portland is currently on top of the table by a solitary point. Angel City need a win and some help to get in, although doing so might give their southern neighbors the Shield.

Racing Louisville @ San Diego Wave - Racing Louisville need a *ton* of help even if they win. San Diego would very much like to take the Shield from Portland.

Well that was fun. Portland decided to squander a Shield on the final matchday for two years in a row, losing to Angel City 5-1 (:eyepop:), while San Diego won 2-0, giving them the top spot. Other results broke Angel City's way, allowing them to take the #5 seed. The Reign finally figured out how to score a goddamn goal, an early Trinity Rodman red card doomed Washington against NC, Gotham nearly blew their playoff chances by blowing a 2-0 lead to an already-eliminated KC to Orlando, who won from a late Marta PK but lost out on the final playoff spot by a GD of 2.

It's in the five-hole!
Only made it through the Portland match so far but hooo boy what a stinker for the Thorns, they had about 10 minutes of okay play in them and then it was just a wet fart for the remainder. Credit where it’s due to AC, they were clearly feeling themselves with good reason, and a bicycle kick goal is always sick as hell. Smith’s not running or cutting like herself yet so they can’t rely on her hero ball, fingers crossed Weaver’s issue is relatively minor, and hard to say it but Sinclair needs to sit on the bench, just a dead weight on the field.

It was really bad in Norwegian handball during the 90s, and awareness about the research going into that which helped prevent injuries in that sport has started to spread to not-Scandi countries.

Here's a book about it: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-acl-solution/robert-marx/grethe-mykleburst/9781936303335

A woman's ACL and maybe all the knee ligaments is 1/3rd the size and strength of a comparable man's. The sports themselves are to blame, so maybe stiff knee braces? I remember a :wtc: quote from the SMU women's coach in the 90's, G. Somebody, that went to the effect of he welcomed them blowing out their ACL because the reconstructive surgery made them far stronger.

I remember hearing a pundit say that ACL injuries are even more common among elite teenage girls, and when it happens it often ruins their chances of making it to the pro level because they miss so much development time.

The only other sport I can think of where injuries are so routine they've become one of the biggest factors in deciding who is playing are baseball pitchers.

The BBC football daily podcast today mentioned that apparently they're going to implement the swiss system for the women's UCL starting the year after next. A 24 team swiss group stage would help stop popular teams from flaming out in qualifying while maintaining enough big team matchups.

Barcelona and Lyon got some good groups, I think Chelsea might struggle against Paris FC if they underestimate them. Same with Real Madrid to be fair, they're somewhat of a wildcard this season. Brann also has a decent shot at going through as the runner up in Group B.

Just like everyone predicted when the playoffs started, the NWSL Championship will be #6 NJ/NY Gotham vs. #4 OL Reign (November 11, 8PM ET CBS).

Gotham made to the final with a pair of road victories, a 2-0 win at #3 North Carolina and a 1-0 ET winner at #2 Portland. A 107' goal in front of a packed Providence Park is a heck of a way to send your team to their first NWSL final.

Reign advanced by continuing their domination of California teams, taking care of #5 Angel City at home 1-0 and beating the Shield-winners San Diego on their turf 1-0 (SD's season ending on this "I totally meant to do that" moment). This is the Reign's third time in the final, with the last two times losing to a team that doesn't even exist anymore. Between that and being familiar with winning where the final will be taking place (San Diego), in my super un-biased opinion it will definitely be third time's the charm for the Reign next week.

Would be a really cool sendoff for Rapinoe if they won but Gotham were really good all season.
