To add to the "just translate it literally" thing, there are whole puns and wordplay where you literally have to make a choice in translating. Plus! You have to alter sentence structure to even fit in the first place. Even Google Translate alters sentence structure! That's why it doesn't say "car red yours is" or some bullshit. Because that's not what translation is!!! I hate these idiots so much. I am become idiot, reader of IOSM.

I don't remember specifically. all languages are weird, no language is any more weird than any other. it's just that none of them directly translate to each other in any real meaningful sense, everything has to filter into another language's idiom, structure, morphology, and so on. even closely related language families like the romance or slavic branches of indo-european have difficulties directly translating into each other, let alone going from japanese to english or whatever. english's major advantage is its robust vocabulary and word order and the weaker reliance on inflection (morphological) or verbal aspect. it's major difficulty is the fact that it is highly irregular, but in practice it doesn't really matter if someone uses an irregular form of a verb. for a germanic speaker, english's relatively similar word order is an asset to learning it, but it's not really that much help, any more than the proportion of our shared vocabulary with french helps us or a francophone.
