I watched the first episode last night because Joe Bob Briggs did a special for it and it was just kind of boring. The zombies still aren't a threat and I'm sick of big bad guys with impenetrable plot armor.

Everyone using flintlock pistols was kind of fun though.

Finally finished this show. I enjoyed season 11, mostly. Had its ups and downs. A lot of it had some good Governors season vibes, which was cool.

But, they said Family so much I expected them to summon Vin Diesel.

Will check out the spin-offs.

Im starting 11 today, after rewatching the whole thing from season 1

Before I had stopped at S10E16, so now Ive watched S10E17-22 for the first time and Im a bit baffled on how bad those were. I found season 10 mostly good, but those 6 last episodes felt like had absolutely no reason to exist.

Its mostly people walking around doing nothing of importance and having boring unnecessary flashbacks and having pointless action scenes that you know will end with nobody important getting hurt and than some petty personal drama that never goes anywhere either. The Princess episode is the only one where the plot advances a little bit, but is just a tiny bit anyway

Even the very season finale being a filler/flashback episode that tells a very uninteresting background history for Negan was so weird

I wonder what happened there? I vaguely remember that there was a long hiatus between S10E16 (on which the proper S10 plot ends) and those last 6 episodes. Maybe it was because of COVID?

edit: S11 is good after the Commonwealth starts. The whole thing with the reapers before could have been dropped, imo. We didint need yet another war with evil crazy gang, we had plenty of those before and the reapers add nothing new. Pope is kinda of a good but mostly because of the acting, which manages to put some life and depth in the character, but they barely do anything with it anyway

Ive finished the series yesterday, I liked S11 for the most part. Still I really think almost everything from the end of the war with the whisperers in S10 to when they resume the Commonwealth storyline in S11 could have been eliminated with no loss, including the Daryl girlfriend plot, the Negan flashback episode, the whole war with the reapers etc

But Im really puzzled about what they did to Rick and Michone. I mean, the fact that they were pulled (first Rick, than Michone a season later) from series just to return on the very last scene and as a hook to future spin off

I mean, was that always the plan or just something happened that caused the actors to leave and than accept to come back in a spin off? Its was really weird, I dont think Ive ever sae a TV show disappear with both main characters for the last seasons like that and than announce they will be coming back in a sequel after the finale

All the spin offs are going to fail, they screwed up the original series. Milked it way too long and completely botched the ending. No one cares anymore, none of the characters are interesting and the dead should be absolutely zero threat by now.

It’s passed because none of the spin offs are interesting.

The “hook” of the original is completely missing. There is no tension, no drama between interesting characters, not enough body horror. It’s just bland all the way down.

It might be that the only people who are watching and rating the new series are the people that enjoyed the other spin-offs.

So only the die-hards are left and all the casual fans couldn’t make it through Maggie and Negan’s New York Adventures

About the original show ending: I dint think it was that bad, but taking Rick and Michonne out was a bad and weird mistake, I have no idea why they would do that. Taking both main characters out of the story for the final season, its baffling

When it happened I thought they had some problem with the actors or something like, but now both are back for the spin off

I believe both were the actors decisions, they wanted to move on by that point. They didn't hate the show, they just wanted to do other things. Then with a few years having passed, they were open to returning.

That’s what I mean, with each new spinoff you have fewer casual viewers and the only people left are the super fans. So it makes sense that each spinoff has a higher rating than the one before it, like The Daryl Dixon Show has a 7.6 rating which fits in between Dead City and The Ones Who Live.

In a few years Eugene Porter’s Wasteland Wizard will be rated a perfect 10

edit: in any case, I think Ill give it a try. The ending was bad but it did manage to make me curious about Rick's situation. Is the only spin off that managed to interest me, anyway. Walking Dead But In France seems boring, even if I love Norman Reedus. Dead City could be fun but, I dunno, I loved Negan but the character was dragging a lot even the last seasons of the main show. I think the biggest issue with trying to stretch out a zombie apocalypse story more than like five seasons tops is that at some point it just becomes a show about a small town and farming. I guess these super groups are something different than "get place, meet bad guy squad, lose place or beat bad guys, repeat" but I feel like the appeal diminishes the further you get from outbreak day.

A little EQ, a touch of reverb, slap on some compression and there. That'll get your dickbutt jiggling.
I think it can be done well, the downfall of society is definitely the most interesting and satisfying, but building up towns and resources is it's own kind of satisfying. But it is vital that people act consistently (not just "logically") and in a way that you can buy into the story.

TWD's characters are incredibly inconsistent. Great ideas are dropped, bad ideas are repeated.

The zombies can always stay a threat without everyone becoming deaf and blind for instance. Tyrese being overpowered by a kid zombie for instance after he'd hulk smashed a whole room of them with his bare hands when he first appeared was absurd.

And people can have lapses, but also can just... not do that. Kill the character some other way.

Scenes of 100 people sleeping in a room and not a single person waking up when people start getting bitten is laughable. It just makes nothing matter. Who care where the characters are headed cause it'll make zero sense along the way. Stories don't need to be realistic, but the characters should be written as people, instead of as talking plot contrivances.

Everything was always top down story wise. Events were not the result of character personality and interplay. Character actions were dictated by the events desired by the writers.

this is what they should have done with the Walking Dead. Still have the spinoffs and but then focused the main series on Eugene. This is kind of what they did for the last season and it was sweet to see Eugene get a girlfriend and continue to find his courage.

Anyway I'm quite enjoying this show, way way more than the other spinoffs, which I dropped early. 1st episode I liked a lot. 2nd too. 3rd a bit less because it seemed like the plot was moving too fast. I'll probably try the other spinoffs again too, though i did give up on both of those around episode 3.

I did like episode 1 of Dead City, especially the stuff with that Christian fascist sherrif who was trying to kill Negan but after that episode it got boring. Seems like the problems I've had with the other spinoffs are when it has had a bunch of new characters I don't care about and a villain that doesn't have strong presence and contemptibility like Negan, the governor, or even the cannibal douche or Alpha. So far this show seems to have better new characters (RIP explosive little guy) and John Locke/Tom Tavner is going to play the main villain and he's a great actor so he should do a pretty good job.

It's nice to be enjoying and looking forward to more Walking Dead again.

Oh man, I'd love a show about post apocalyptic small town farming.

In fact the BBC show Survivors (1975) is fantastic because that's all it is. No zombies, few scary bad guys, tons of farming. It's great. The best parts of late Walking Dead were all the cute towns- Hilltop and Alexandria were lovely locations.

I actually tried to start the Maggie and Negan in New York series and they cut back to Maggie's home settlement and it is adorable. But it's just a couple scenes between a bunch of nonsense and I gave up.

Do either the Daryl show or the Michonne and Rick show have any sort of farming town focus? I'm really just in it for the farming towns.

That’s because the main character is in it. Also it’s the first episode so old fans checked it out. I made it through 3/4 episodes through dead city, a season through the Daryl Dixon one (because it had an interesting hook) and stopped watching before the end of the episode of The one’s that lived.

Whines:

I’m a prisoner of a giant well organised army, I am fed provided weapons and told I’ll be free to do whatever I want after a sentence of enforced work.

Do I: Wait the time out them do what I want with the resources of a city and the benefits of my reputation and willingness of the city to recruit me

Or: Wait till I’m in the middle of hand to hand combat with a walker swarm and cut of my own hand, limping off horrendously wounded into the dark with no supplies.

Man! These zombies im slaughtering effortlessly with a specialised weapon through a barrier all day without any risk at all sure are dangerous! What an exciting situation! Hey… why does every dead person in the world own a long sleeve tee shirt and died wearing it?

I could be wrong but after you complete your "consignment" you can live in the city and maybe enjoy a small degree of freedom there, but you are not allowed to leave if your a civilian. Also if I were in that situation I don't think I would be entirely trusting of the big scary military even if they did tell me I would be free.

The Original series had its ups and its downs but ended on a good note. The last few seasons were good.

Fear had a lot of potential, but no one was watching by S4 when it started getting better with mostly a whole new cast. season 8 was pretty terrible though. Very anti climactic.

World Beyond’s only redeeming quality was the world building but they should have covered that more - because the CRM was mentioned elsewhere - in one of the other shows.

Negan takes NY was unneeded and kinda stupid, but JDM can carry anything decently.

Daryl’s show was too short and spent too long on what happened after he got to France and not how he got there. Glad Carol will be coming back for s2.

Rick and Michonnes show is good. It should have been the first spinoff, and I know I’m going to be pissed at the episode count. The first episode could have easily been six episodes.

Once Rick left and they announced there would be a spin-off, I think that killed any tension in the walking dead. AMC saw how interested people were for the announced movies and seemed to decide to not kill off any characters from that point in case they wanted to use them for future shows.

So there was this weird disconnect between the show telling us how dangerous the world is but then no one actually dying, so the stakes for all the shows just evaporated. Those idiot kids in World Beyond should not have survived.

But hey at least if AMC wants Princess to make an appearance on Dead City season 2 they have that option now
