Taillon is gonna be back this week and they're gonna send Brown to the pen even though he's probably better than like half the actual rotation and also that means Smyly can just go back to normal long relief duty instead of being a piggyback starter so that'll help things a bit. Then once Steele is back there's gonna have to be a serious look at whether Assad also goes back to the pen or we just admit Kyle is probably washed.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39944171/red-sox-kenley-jansen-says-slick-baseballs-hard-control

quote:

BOSTON -- Kenley Jansen is upset with the quality of baseballs.

"I got to get better, but also if you're playing in the cold weather, windy, and you get pearls balls out there that's not rubbed well, I don't know where the ball's going," the Boston Red Sox reliever said after Sunday's 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The 36-year-old right-hander entered with a two-run lead, hit Logan O'Hoppe leading off, then gave up a single, walk and Anthony Rendon's sacrifice fly before striking out Luis Rengifo and Mike Trout for his fourth save in four chances.

Jansen tied John Franco for fifth place all time with his 424th save.

"I don't hit guys, I don't walk people this much. And I start to get frustrated." Jansen said. "Any balls that came, I just throw it back till when I find a good ball. And it's just brutal."

Jansen said bullpen balls were better rubbed than game balls.

"It's embarrassing. It's been a while I've been playing in this league and, from the beginning of my career until now, it's getting worse," he said.

"It's been an issue the whole year," he said. "I've been talking to a lot of my teammates, and they feel the same way. First pitch, get out of my hand, I don't know where it's going. Second pitch, the same thing. Then, I tried to throw a ball down the middle, just keep going down. It's tough trying to make an adjustment and also you have the clock ticking."

Jansen said he got lucky when he faced Trout, that he threw a few balls out "and got some that are rubbed-up balls."

I mean I don't doubt that MLB sucks enough that they'd cheap out and gently caress with the baseballs, but also c'mon Jansen literally every other pitcher is dealing with them and doing fine.

gently caress no. That's absolutely hysterical. I bet he'll never do that again. So much of his bullshit is just seeing how far he can push the umps, and he totally got that one over on them by sheer force of, "What the gently caress, did that just happen?"

Eh, he turned in a two hitter over eight innings last outing. I know four ERs before wrapping five innings isn't great, but it's not a meltdown or anything.

Nestor has a higher ceiling than most people would give him credit. Pretty much all of last season he was playing injured, alongside the rest of the Yankees and their culture of, "Playing hurt and bad is better than going on the IL."

Now that Holliday finally got his first single, I wonder how much longer the Orioles will give him before sending him down. 1 for 15 with nine strikeouts is a rough start. Not that I am faulting him he is only 20 but I think now that he has seen MLB pitching you have him go down to AAA and work out some things. Or ideally now that he got his first hit he relaxes and goes on a tear. But I am not sure how much longer you can give him if it continues to be blah.

It does feel like he's not quite there yet but also way too good for AAA. I could see them keeping him around for another series to see if he shows improvement after his first hit. He clearly has talent but he feels way greener than Adley or Henderson did for their debuts. Doesn't help that he looks like a child out there.

I can see the argument. I would score it a hit, but I can see "Well, the pitcher was there well ahead of the batter and the dropped ball allowed the batter to reach."
Again, I don't agree with it, but I see it.

Eh, pitcher was there, ball was in his glove (edit: ok, hit the glove, wasn't in it), and he had the step. If he didn't just fail to catch it it's an out. The diving play/throw from knees doesn't factor in - fielder got the assist. Sure it made his throw harder, and it wouldn't have been an error I think if he tossed it late or wide or whatever. But after the fielder made a good toss, the pitcher should have had that.

Basically whenever the Cubs bullpen enters the game. Even if they’re going to win, it’s not fun to watch.

EDIT: really though, my metric is just “do I have other poo poo to do?” I’ll watch a lovely game to the end if I’m just sitting around.
