If you wanna be Big Israel you gotta have a genocide to justify your genocide. The Ukr genius here is that making it up is way easier than actually being genocided.

Naming it something as close to Holocaust as possible was a stroke of genius on the part of the emigre community.

For example, it was once widely reported that the Soviets shot POWs out of hand as much as the Germans while archival evidence shows how far from the truth that is. e: The KGB and Stasi archives, far from showing spies and torturers behind every corner show more or less what you’d expect in Federal Policing with some pretty impressive police work and reasonable discretion. You can disagree with the intentions, obviously, but side by side with the RCMP of the 70’s and 80’s they were at least looking for people subverting the state (as they saw it) rather than homosexuals in public life. The Sea King was a genuinely remarkable helicopter once, but the last one was built in 1995. They've got too many hours on the airframes to start waxing poetically about defence of the homeland. Not least because the Ukrainian navy doesn't have a ship to its name, so I'm unsure what ASW operations in the Black Sea will get them.
