Primarily watch AEW so my list reflects that. Put no real thought into this, just went with feels as I typed it out.

10 - Kris Statlander - Always brings her best, always has bangers of matches, with an excellent and brutal moveset. I do kind of prefer her older gimmick as it was a bit more goofy; right now she's traded it for a more serious presentation.

9 - Zack Sabre Jr - Barely watched NJPW this year, but the little I did see was excellent. Love ZSJ's unique energy and promo style.

8 - Toni Storm - Fun gimmick, good wrestler. Every time her segment comes up it's a hoot. I love all the little things she gets, like the zoom in onto her close up, the monochrome promos, Luther just being a fun guy in the back, everyone else trying to keep up with her energy. Would probably be higher if she had a breakout feud for me.

7 - Kazuchika Okada - Like ZSJ above, I saw little, but the little I saw was excellent. Contender for best of all time, and in the years where I do follow NJPW, much higher on the list. Alas, I only have so much time.

6 - Eddie Kingston - Wrestling is real and I love him real good. Storyline of the year for me with his C2 which started with him immediately being humbled then going on to destory the BCC in singles matches until he won it all. I struggle to remember what he did the rest of the year though (which is probably more my fault than anything but eh).

5 - Christian Cage - My favourite game to play this year with my non-wrestling friends is to tell them about this guy who exclusively seems to feud with young wrestlers who have dead fathers, with his beef being that they don't do what he wants them to do. Then I ask them to guess the name of his group.

4- Ricky Starks - He's someone I feel who always knocks it out of the park every time (except for that weird segment with him, Big Bill, Kenny and Jericho). His body mannerisms and facial expressions are on point in the ring, like how his body just deflated as he was whipping Bryan Danielson who was tanking every hit. He also does cool haute couture promo vignettes. The only reason he's not higher is that every time it feels like they strap a rocket onto him it turns out the rocket was made by ACME. Strap match might be my favourite match of the year.

3 - Orange Cassidy - AEW's workhorse champion of 2023. His series of title defences showed just how versatile his style is, and the long-running story of him being more beat up as it went on, culminating in a heartbreaking loss to Mox was incredible.

2 - Swerve Strickland - The ruthless, psychopathic, homebreaking villain is this year's breakout star. Everything he does feels like it matters due to how he holds himself, and his entourage helps juxtapose just how horrible this man is. The only real issue with him being champion is that Joe is cool af

1 - Bryan Danielson - My favourite of all time! He has such a superb mastery of pretty much all aspects of wrestling. I love that his character in AEW is both sympathetic and a bit of a poo poo, letting him feud with pretty much the entire roster at any time. He can do your technical, your brawling, your fast spots, and he has a great understanding of how all of it looks on camera. Great talker too, not necessarily the most eloquent or elaborate, just someone who wants to effectively hit his points efficiently.

Honourable Mentions - MJF in the first half of the year, Jon Moxley, Jay White, Samoa Joe, Shingo Takagi, Minoru Suzuki, Hangman Adam Page, Julia Hart, Tomohiro Ishii, Daniel Garcia, Daddy Magic, Will Ospreay, Vikingo, Billie Starkz, Athena, Evil Uno, Konosuke Takeshita, Will Hobbs, Kenny Omega....drat there's so many and still many more I haven't mentioned! But they didn't come to mind as immediately as the top 10 so that's that for me.

Narrowing it down to ten was tough, and I basically only watch AEW. Dunno how y'all who follow Mexican and Japanese feds come to a top ten that feels satisfying, hah.

So my list is mostly vibes-based, where it's the wrestlers whose matches or moments I shared most often with my dad and bro, who are hyper-casual fans.

Honorable Mentions

RJ City - He last wrestled in 2022, but he's too drat charismatic and clever to not receive a mention. In a Favorite Active Wrestling Personalities list, I'd have the aunts Renee and RJ way up there.

Sami Zayn - I'm happy he got his SLOM, but wish he'd won the title. Finding out a decade ago that the cool indie guy El Generico had been one of the younger kids on my school bus twenty years prior was a :tviv: moment.

Billie Starkz - She's poised as heck for her age, and the supercut of all of Athena and Billie's AEW/ROH matches and backstage Minion bits got me invested in both their stories.

The Top 10

10) Orange Cassidy - *thumb up*
9) Swerve Strickland - possibly responsible for the housing crisis
8) Samoa Joe - remember the match where he peeled back a bunch of ring mat and muscle bustered darby onto the wood base? that's a champion
7) Athena - goddamn she's so crisp and strong in the ring, and hilarious doing her schtick backstage
6) Takeshita - give me more of takeshita in 2024, have him superplex darby off of everest
5) Christian Cage - even my dad is like "now that's a dad'
4) "Timeless" Toni Storm - strong in-ring, sweet cheeks music, even her outcasts stuff was fine, and timeless is simply inspired theatre nonsense
3) Bryan Danielson - the ironman vs mjf, winning with a fractured arm vs okada, eyepatch c2 run, goddamn
2) Eddie Kingston - the king of the bums
1) 'Hangman" Adam Page - spewing a fountain of Swerve's blood is truly cowboy poo poo

(sorry kenny, lucha bros, willow, darby, sting, and a dozen others)

Not a cop
10. Anthony Bowens- Other people probably "deserve" to be in this spot, but I don't care Bowens is somehow underrated as a wrestler despite being I'm a highly popular group.
9. Willow- A solid wrestler with a great presence and magnetic personality.
8. Julia Hart- Has improved all around from in ring to character work. Hail Satan.
7. Darby- An absolute psycho in the ring that can make anyone look like a monster.
6. Hangman- Will always be My Champ except when against Swerve.
5. Orange Cassidy- Just an absolute workhorse during '23. I didn't watch Chikara so his change from comedy wrestler to an almost forever-champ has been so fun.
4. Brodie King- Basically my Platonic ideal of a hoss. Hail Satan.
3. Eddie Kingston- The C2 might be my favorite character arc since the Adam Page won the world championship. I'm so happy he's having his moment in the sun.
2. Swerve Strickland- Dude threatened Hangman's baby and got Hanger booed for it. I have high hopes for his 2024 run.
1. Bryan Danielson- The Greatest of All Time.

1. Eddie Kingston - He’s finally getting his moment, and even gets to lug around three belts like he’s Misawa, and that’s great.

2. Kazuchika Okada - He’s cool and good and the Rainmaker is the best finisher, period.

3. Zack Sabre Junior - Just so smooth in the ring. Makes the extraordinary look easy, and the ordinary look extraordinary.

4. Bryan Danielson - He’s just so goddamn good. What more is there to say?

5. Christian Cage - He takes heeling to a whole new level, pushing boundaries but never being boring. Probably the best at character work going around right now.

6. Hikaru Shida - So cool. Let her have a proper run with a belt, for gently caress’s sake.

7. Jon Moxley - He makes every match he’s in, regardless of where it is on the card, feel like a goddamn occasion. Mr Reliable, both as a guy to carry the company and to put on a show.

8. Samoa Joe - In addition to killing his opponents, he also reignited my interest in the World Title scene in AEW at the end of the year.

9. Kenoh - The world’s most gotten to man, and it’s just great. Turned overcompensating into an art.

10. Athena - Mrs Reliable, whatever Tony Kahn’s paying her, it should be triple. One of the most consistently excellent and entertaining champions all year.

My brain is broken so I keep a spreadsheet with my ratings of every match I watch, & then I bashed together a lazy points system with 10 for *****, 7 for ****¾, all the way to 1 for ***¾. And just "sort by who is the highest number". Because doing that is a hundred times easier than reducing it to "favourite wrestlers". I could struggle to whittle it down to 25, so I just rely on "who I thought had the best year" because it involves no thought other than arbitrarily assigning a rating to a match after I watch it. It's easier this way, somehow

I only started keeping the spreadsheet because my memory is absolute garbage & I could never remember all the bangers I see in a year.

psst you wanna do a communism?
10 Sawyer Wreck- A wrestler I wish I saw more, but didn't really because the GCW show was kind of lacking. Just my ideal type of wrestler.
9 Vikingo- seeing him in a lovely casino in North Vegas at a GCW show was worth it.
8 Brody King- Probably my favorite meat golem wrestler lately.
7 Eddie Kingston- the heart and soul of AEW right now
6 Athena- The best act in ROH and had one of the strongest years I've seen in awhile; just totally locked in with her character and having banger matches
5 Bryan Danielson- The GOAT
4 Dark Sheik- Having seen her live 3 times and the third time being in a crowd of mostly fellow trans women seeing how much people latched on to her there is something that I find special. Hope to see her more in 2024.
Zoe's Parasocial Local Indie Bias Overriding Everything
3 Ziggy Haim- One of the most underrated gremlins in wrestling today; really good intergender wrestler. She can get you to hate her or love her, mostly the latter because her energy is infectious, as is her willingness to do deathmatches. Hoping she gets some big breaks in 2024 because she is teasing retirement. https://twitter.com/bigzighaim/status/1680720324361330689/photo/1
2 MV Young- The King of Pittsburgh has been doing a lot of hard hitting brawls be it in Enjoy or his wrestling school or no ring shows at bars, skate parks, and DIY punk venues that no longer exist (RIP Collision in Homewood). MV probably has a chance to get into bigger indies, he is finding his identity after a couple of years of doing Polyam Hunk who gets a ripoff Nick Gage ring intro. Also he's always fun to pick his brain about shows, he's too hard on his shows for what they are (mostly his trainees working with T2T Brooklyn and AIW trainees/vets) https://twitter.com/wantedmv/status/1719827963758186858/photo/1
1 Edith Surreal- I'll always put Edie as number 1 from my biases of her not only being the champ of my local promotion, but as always willing to chat with me at shows about transitioning and giving advice as I made it through 1 year on HRT. I'm happy for her successes and hope she starts popping up in more indies and would love for her to get a big break in like AEW or hell I'll take GCW. https://twitter.com/edithsurreal/status/1741089943273750867/photo/1
