the amount of modern society that revolves around propitiating algorithms that are black boxes by design - that no human can fully understand why they do what they do, fix them when they go wrong, or even really identify when they're 'wrong' to begin with, is increasing by the day. resumes are initially evaluated by algorithm, and so people are having to mutate their submissions in bizarre, anti-human ways like filling the bottom of their resume with dozens of keywords. these programs are fairly simple now and there's been a few high-profile failures (like the Amazon one that focused on people named 'Jared') but they'll continue working on these until at least one company decides they've "got it right" (there's already one that scans the social media of prospective babysitters and gives them a score for being "disrespectful" or not) and it'll spread to all the others. job hunting will be about 'quirks' in some specific company's JobBot that spreads by word-of-mouth by petitioners like preteens talking about their uncle who works on the new smash brothers

you can see glimmers of the future hellworld in extremely online jobs like "youtuber" especially, where the various algorithms that decide who gets the most eyecatching spots, how success is judged, what videos get taken down, even who gets paid and how much, change regularly and in a completely opaque manner. the people who work at youtube can't offer explanations because they also do not know why their algorithms make specific decisions. they can tweak them and pull them in general directions but otherwise, again, black box. and of course they're all going insane and burning out because the algorithms make no allowance for human frailties, and the people that *run* the algorithms understand that there is an infinite supply of increasingly-desperate warm bodies to feed them

but getting back to tumblr specifically. so the thing about tumblr's staff is that they are extraordinarily bad at basically everything, and the pornfinder algorithm is no exception. it's been flagging things like "screenshots of Presto Studio's The Journeyman Project" and a video of abstract blurs. more importantly, it is extremely sensitive to LGBT material, such that it will flag "two fully clothed men (or women) kissing" as adult material. it flags the gay pride flag as adult material. it will flag almost anything with LGBT keywords in it. the last time tumblr went on a big porn-scouring spree they blocked the 'gay' and 'lesbian' tags entirely and there is no reason to believe that they will somehow be less heavy-handed now that it's all being automated.

i'm sure the tumblr people don't want to blacklist the LGBT community from their website, they're not stupid, but they're willing to accept that if it means getting back into the good graces of Apple. and this is why i was posting about liberals and free speech before, because this demonstrates what we leftists already knew, that the proud dedication to wokeness and free speech from places like tumblr and reddit and wherever else mean exactly jack loving dick when the rubber hits the road. any media company, twitter, facebook, whatever- that saw something on their platform become a genuine threat to their bottom line would respond with the same scorched loving earth tactics because all those ideals were preposterous lies to begin with

and it makes me so impotently angry because, like, how dare they? going back to <friend>'s post again, the creative output of a hundred million people over a decade and a half on tumblr, or god knows how much on vine, all loving vanishing into the aether because a collection of wretched mutants who have never read a book that wasn't a) a management book based around a single facile analogy or b) the autobiography of the sulfur king of Rhodesia, they get to point at the work of literal millions of people that they'd spit on if they saw them on the street and say 'that's mine, i decide what happens to it'. yeah we know you all love this but we're pivoting to loving nonexistence now, we're so grateful to have gone on this incredible journey with you and kindly go gently caress yourselves on the way out

DIY is both an excellent way to save a ton of money and an excellent way to end up spending a whole bunch more money for someone to fix your fuckup and the initial problem. it all depends on your skill level.

but yeah a new WH is only $4k if the existing one was some crazy boutique thing or the previous heater leaked enough to cause damage.

I believe that none of the apps allow you to do it in-app, you have to go onto the reddit website to flip the switch (which is off by default).

every other site has gone through what tumblr is going through now and settled on using a very strict algorithm that only auto-flags really obvious poo poo like images that match a database of known offensive images* backed up with massive operation of underpaid and disposable people that check on near-matches and user reports. by all accounts those jobs are utter hell and essentially require daily counseling to help the people handle all the horrible poo poo they see.

tumblr doesn't want to spend that kind of money.

* there are several different databases but they all work by hashing the images in various ways and comparing them to hashes of stuff like known CP images. the methods used are apparently extremely effective at overcoming all the various methods people use to try and disguise their images from automated identification.

this is a good take

these kinds of algorithms are dehumanizing in two ways:
1. they reduce human expression (not just in the artistic sense - we express our lives through actions that culminate in the kind of skills you see on resumes) to quantifiable chunks that are abstracted into a unit of exchange
2. they reduce the need for human labor. obsessing over automation as a means to reduce staff places extra weight on the cost of that staff, over everything else they have to offer (like yknow judgment and social skills that outpace image recognition)
