Enjoy! Im kind of steamed, Amazon was having an Avatar bluray + 2 3d glasses for Panasonic TV bundles last week or so, but only when buying direct from Amazon. The AMazon ship delay for the TV i wanted was 1-3 months, what the gently caress? So the 55" GT30 I bought has no 3d glasses to go with it. Not a huge deal, I didnt buy it for the 3d aspect but I felt I kinda got jerked around by Amazon through the whole thing. e/n

I was looking at buying this tele: http://tinyurl.com/3etxy2w Under features it sayas it does 720p but under specification it says: 480/60i, 480/60p, 576/50i, 576/50p, 720/50p, 720/60p, 1080/50i, 1080/60i, 1080/24p (HDMI™ only), 1080/50p (HDMI™ / Component), 1080/60p (HDMI™ / Component). I want it mainly for my PS3 and I want a full HD tele, but I found it surprising that on the main page it only says 720p but it seems as though it does 1080p. Why are they confusing me? VV Okay, thanks. Nierbo fucked around with this message at 13:19 on Jul 4, 2011 |

The native screen resolution is 1280x720, but it will accept 1080p signals and downscale them for display.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on that bravia. Its only $450 and has free delivery and I'm sure I can live without 1080p. I know I'll have to go upwards of 800 to get a decent brand proper HD tele and I can't really afford that. Unless anyone has any reason for me not to get it? e: Hmm.. its only 50hz. Is that too low for gaming? Nierbo fucked around with this message at 22:40 on Jul 4, 2011 |

I recently bought a Panasonic TC-P42S30. 1080p plasma, and all the information I've found says that it upconverts. I'm hooking up to it a PS3 using an HDMI cable, going into the HDMI input that's labeled for GAMES on the TV. When I was playing a couple different games (specifically Arkham Asylum and the Sly Cooper HD collection), I noticed that the lines looked really jagged. According to the game boxes, the native display for the games is 720p. Is the jaggedness a product of the upconversion? Is the upconversion not really happening? Have lines always been this jagged and I just didn't notice on my SDTV? Or is it just that some games happen to have really jagged lines and I got unlucky with my choices?
|
|
|
|
If the upscaling wasn't happening you would be looking at a 1280x720 picture in the middle of your 1080p screen with enormous black borders on all sides. I know for certain that Batman has no antialiasing so that amount of jagginess is normal and expected. Coming from a blurry SDTV, you just aren't used to it. Try playing a game with a good AA implementation to see the difference; Portal 2, God of War 3, or the new Alice game for example.

The specs that you quoted also list 720p60 and 1080p60 which means it takes 60hz, which is a normal 720p/1080p signal and is what the 360/PS3 output.

The TV I ordered via Amazon through a fulfilled by vendor arrived with the screen cracked in half. Naturally I refused delivery. Contacted Amazon, they're telling me they can't send me a new one because it's a seperate vendor and will refund me the money. And I can't directly contact the vendor, "contact us" link on their marketplace page is Amazon customer service. I don't want a refund, I want the TV I ordered! Anyone have experience dealing with this? I got a great price, it's gone nowhere near what I paid since I ordered it...

In your order history on Amazon there is a way to contact the vendor. Might have to file this as a "new return" but one way or another its definitely possible. All the messages to/from them go through Amazon so its all on record and viewable by Amazon if the vendor gives you any trouble.

I was hoping to get a TV recommendation from the thread. I'm looking to get a 55"+ screen in either plasma or led with local dimming (edge or backlit)though I don't need 3D or any internet connected features (technically it doesn't even need a tuner as I have a cable box). I'm willing to wait a bit to get a good deal and I was hoping to keep the price below $1500. If there's a few that would meet the criteria that would be great as it would increase my chance or getting a good deal. Thank's for your help.

The TV will be used to play the occasional Blu-Ray, to watch streaming media via Boxee, and for OTA HDTV signals. (It also looks to me that 120Hz HDTVs are rare in the under 40 inch category -- if that's the case, is it worth it in terms of picture quality to go up a size or two?) I understand that the 8 series have better contrast, but what does this mean for me when all I'm using it for is 360 games and DVDs? I'm a TV noob so I just don't know.

Discussion about the differences between 7 and 8 series LED here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1343089 Comes down to 8 series featuring deeper blacks/contrast through micro dimming plus, but people complain about cloudiness problem being more prevalent, and in general don't like the bevel as much. 8 series also comes with 2 free pairs of glasses. Sometimes the price difference is big, sometimes it's small or insignification or even cheaper than a 7 series TV depending on active sales.

I've got a budget of $700, possibly up to $900. I'm looking for 42-47". Only requirements are 3x HDMI and VGA input. Plasma is probably out because I watch a lot of stuff with prominent chyrons (ESPN, CNBC, Starcraft). Built in video playback via USB would be great, especially if it supports MKV and H.264. I'm looking at the Panasonic U30 and E30 and the LG LK520 and V5500. Josh Lyman fucked around with this message at 06:11 on Jul 16, 2011 |

Ive seen a 52" HX800 edgelit LED sony and it did nothing for me. locally dimmed LEDs are okay but youre looking at $2000 for a 55" easily. How far away are you from your tv screen? (measuring literally from your head to where the flat panel's screen would be) As someone who used to think 50" was "good enough for 13 feet", i now have a 92" projector at 14 feet and if anything its too small... Go big or go home, frys often has 58" panasonics or 60" LG plasmas for $900. I just ordered one about a week ago from Best Buy for a similar price. Passive 3D so glasses are cheap, it DOES do local dimming. I haven't gotten mine yet but from all the reviews (including the uber-anal AVS guys and Chad B over there) its done rather well. Will have mine Tuesday. I returned my Panasonic ST30. The brightness fluctuation issue was an absolute killer in movies and games. If they ever fix it with firmware it would be a killer set, but until then its really an inexcusable thing. Actually, almost all of this year's affordable plasmas have some gamebreaking issue. Samsung's D550s have brightness pops and terrible glare (though at least this is controllable). LGs are worse than last year's models for black levels and are having significant IR issues.

So I've just started looking for a new TV for the first time in 8-9 years, and I've quickly realized that I have no idea what I'm doing. Last time I shopped for one of these, I'm pretty sure plasma/HDTV/etc were all in their infancy. Basically, I'm trying to find something within the following parameters: -I'd like to spend $1500 or less (preferably under $1000). I could go a little bit over this if there's an absolutely phenomenal unit at, say, $1550, but not by too much -50" to 60" -no real preference or prejudice regarding plasma/LCD/LED/etc or specific brands -I'm planning on using it primarily for watching netflix via my xbox, PS3/Xbox 360/PC gaming, and basically using it as a monitor for my desktop/laptop via this: Atlona AT-AiR3 (not sure if that's the best product to use for that either, just seems to be the best one I've found so far). I'll also occasionally just watch regular TV on it, I guess. I've shopped around a bit at Best Buy, Target, and Fry's Electronics. A few that have stood out so far have been a Philips 55PFL5706D/F7 for $1100 at Target, a Sony KDL55EX620 for $1550 at Fry's, a 55" LCD Dynex for $800 at Best Buy that I forgot to write the model # for, and a 51" plasma Samsung for $800 at Best Buy which I also failed to write the model # for. Honestly though, I have no idea if these are right for what I'm going for, and the sales reps have all been some mix of uninformed or apathetic. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated, shopping for these things seems a hell of a lot more complicated than it was a decade ago. sentientcarbon fucked around with this message at 00:38 on Jul 18, 2011 |

You have a high risk of ending up with image retention, and they generally don't do very well with PC setups. You'll be looking for an LED (preferably backlit/local dimming or a very good edgelit) or a nice CCFL LCD. The options you shopped around for are fairly horrible. Philips and Dynex really aren't worth considering. The only value brand worth it in a debate is Vizio. Do you want any Smart TV features (internet connectivity, Netflix on the set itself, etc?)? 3D?

Cozmosis posted:Do you want any Smart TV features (internet connectivity, Netflix on the set itself, etc?)? 3D? Internet connectivity would definitely be a big plus (if the unit has stellar marks on everything else and a great price, lack thereof wouldn't necessarily be a dealbreaker, but yeah I'd still like it). Netflix on the set itself....meh. It'd be nice, but since I have that right on the xbox, that's not terribly important. If I was considering 2 identical sets except one of them had netflix but cost an extra $5-10, I'd probably get the one with netflix, any more than that and I'd probably get the one without it. 3D, I pretty much feel the same way I do about netflix-a nice extra, but not worth a whole lot to me.
