And yea I looked and saw that edge lit LED's are no go. I'm looking at that one Fog Tripper got. It seems people really like it and it's a Back Lit LED with Local Dimming. I'm thinking about getting that one unless someone has a better/different idea (Or comes out to say it isn't as nice as it seems) in about the same price range (or cheaper!).
Fog tripper might like his tv, but I bought and returned the same tv and got a Panasonic plasma. The reviews on amazon are great for the 5600/6500 and it appears to be a good value, but the contrast/picture is sub par in its price range.

I want to point out also with that LG that local dimming is OFF when set to game mode. So pretty much you have to deal with input lag or god awful contrast when playing games. Dark movies and games looked horrible on it. This is not the tv for a gamer that cares about picture quality. The tv is more about budget 3d with the whole family.

The lg LWxx5600/6500 looks great on paper but the first time you use it in a dark room you will be disappointed. Also the measured contrast ratio in 3d mode is under like 500:1.

It was a huge hassle mailing back a 47 inch tv. I don't regret for a second returning it and getting a Panasonic gt30.

Edit: I don't want to poo poo on anybody that bought and enjoyed the tv. I reallly wanted to like the tv. I was so stoked when it came from amazon..

I just wanted to tell people my experience with the tv.

Hey, I welcome the feedback. TV still has a ways to go before I even get it, but the current deal on it, coupled with the reviews on it (overwhelmingly positive) sold me. edit: Not to mention I snagged it with the 30 day free return deal.

Dark room would be a small fraction of the time, as well as 3D use. We are going for a close to 25 year old set, so we will probably never even note the few reported downsides (every single set around that price has SOME downside).

Last night I pulled the trigger on a SC-BTT370 Panasonic 3D Blu-Ray system (Amazon). Again, not without the small number of issues reported in reviews, but overwhelmingly positive.

edit: The games we'd play on it would be on a PS1 (Spyro and Medievil), so we are not heavy console graphics snobs by any stretch. :)

So mt old SDTV bit the dust last week and I'm finally going to upgrade. I've found one in my price range but I'm confused about whats good enough for gaming . Is 60hz enough? does gaming mode really help? does it really matter at all?

I use my tv mostly for blurays and games through my ps3.I'd hate to pull the trigger on a tv only to find out it wasn't the right make and model and it's really hard to get a solid answer out of the 5 years of posts on the net.

Anyone have any hands on experience with the EX500 series Sony Bravia LCD sets? In particular the KDL-55EX500? My four year old 55" SXRD has suffered a light engine failure and after a call to customer support, I was offered this set for 675.00 as a replacement. The price appears to be good but I am not opposed to spending some additional money if I can get something drastically better. Reviews appear decent at best but are all from 2010, I am curious how the set has stood the test of time since it's release.

Amazon has a great deal on this and I am tempted to buy it but I have usually stuck with Samsung in terms of manufacturer.

Is it good for the price? Is it good at ALL? If you have any recommendations for a 42" (within ~$700) I will take any. I haven't bought a TV in nearly 2 years or so. Note that my current TV is a 32" LCD Samsung LN32B460 so this would be quite an upgrade.

I actually picked the 46" version on Black Friday from Walmart. I know the 55" uses a Sharp screen vs. a Samsung Screen and its supposed to be pretty fantastic for the price. I'm very happy with the 46" and have no real complaints at the moment.

Better is subjective, it for sure feels much bigger and you can immediately tell when you're looking at it that it is much bigger. Too bad you missed the Black Friday sale a Fry's, the Sharp 70incher had a one day sale price of $1,499. One my friends has the 70" Sharp and he loves it, he upgraded from a 60" I believe. I have a 55" and am pretty happy with it, but one of my other friends thinks its too small for his tastes.

I am able to get a discount on some Sony tv's and I am looking for a good quality 46".

What is available right now is:

KDL46BX420, 46" LCD HDTV 60hz at $525 + tax
KDL46EX523, 46" LED HDTV w/WiFi 60hz at $692 + tax
KDL46EX620, 46" LED HDTV 120 hz motionflow at $756 + tax

My preferences are mainly just picture quality and value. I do not know how much better LCD vs LED is, which seems to be the biggest difference in price for these, as well as the 60Hz vs 120Hz. How much better is LED vs LCD, besides weight/thinness?

I do not watch sports and will mainly play games with some DVD and Blu-ray watching, so I am not sure how important having 120Hz is. The 120Hz just seems like it makes it more "HD-like" even though it is just fake interpolation and I am still not sure if I prefer that look or not.

Apps/TV internet do not really interest me, unless I am missing out on something since I do not know much about what they provide outside of Netflix/Hulu.

Based on the specs, the BX420 only has 2 HDMI ports which is not a deal breaker, the others have 4. The EX523 comes with integrated wifi, which is nice but I do not really know about using the features with that. Finally there is the Bravia Engine 3 vs the X-Reality Engine, which I am not sure what the impact is.

Does anyone have any suggestions/opinions between these three based off of this? Should I still be looking at other brands/deals on Amazon based off of these prices for what they offer?

The aspect ratio is consistent at 16:9. The only difference that comes with size is that the bigger the screen, the bigger the pixels - there are still 1920x1080 of them whether it's a 42" or a 72" screen.

So I recently purchased a Samsung UN40D5003 (Samsung UN40D5003 40-Inch 1080p 60/120 Hz LED HDTV (Black)...) television. This is the first HDTV I've ever owned and although I plan on using this with my Xbox I have been experimenting with using the TV as a second monitor for my computer (I'm using an ATI SAPPHIRE 5770). Here's a few strange things I've noticed.

In Catalyst I have the Samsung set to use 1080p as its resolution and on my Asus Monitor I've chosen 1920x1080 as its resolution. From what I've been reading these two resolutions are supposed to be equivalent, however, my desktop stretches over the borders on the HDTV slightly. The only way I've found to get the two to match is by choosing the "Screen to Fit" selection on the television. What's going on?

I picked up the 47LV5400 a few months back and I'm not exactly a picture quality afficionado or anything, but I love it. It comes with a bunch of features and apps that range from who cares (all the dumb toy and sudoku/spot the difference/etc crap,) to hell yeah, (a couple of the different streaming media server options like Plex and DLNA which blow XBMC out of the water, Netflix and the ability to sync with your NHL or MLB Live accounts,) and gonna be cool although don't quite seem to work properly quite yet unfortunately. (eg. the comedy central app or the MTV app that among other things lets you play the top 15 videos from every year going back to 1980 or so :toot: ) but regular firmware upgrades have fixed and also brought in a lot of features since I've had it, so hopefully stuff that doesn't work yet soon will.

I use it as a monitor for my PC as well, and things like BF3 and Skyrim look great on it. So far I haven't noticed any input lag from it, and as far as picture quality is concerned, then only problem I've had is some screen tearing when I'm streaming movies from my PC via the media servers. Being an LCD the black levels aren't as great as they could be, but it's nothing I've ever noticed unless I've been looking for it (for this thread) and I've never felt it made my viewing subpar. Depends on how picky you are I guess, and for ~$700 I don't think you're going to do much better LCD-wise.

My only other point would be that in the last month or two, there seems to be a bit of a panel lottery on the recently made versions of these sets now that LG have gone through their original stock. I don't know if it's the same for the 42" as for the 47" but if it's possible, you might want to check serial numbers or email Amazon to see if you can confirm you're getting and IPS panel or not. For what it's worth, I've heard that the other panels are still very good picture quality wise, it's mostly that their viewing angle isn't quite as good as the IPS models. Depends on if you're viewing from mostly straight on or not as to whether this is going to become an issue for you.

What's people's opinion of the Sharp LC-70LE732U LCD/LED TV? There's a dood at my university that's trying to convince us to upgrade the smart classrooms with them (the rooms are going to get flat screens of some kind no matter what.)

I'm a little worried about bulb burnout. One of his arguments is that we won't be paying for bulbs as much (currently we have projectors) but I'm not sure. How much of a problem is bulb burnout going to be with these? Better/worse than projectors?

Edit: just editing to say, we're looking for something that has good picture quality from multiple angles in a place with windows, supports a large variety of inputs, can be wi-fi enabled (maybe), and won't break down under heavy usage (12 hours a day.)

Sorry, I was going off of the pro/con list in the OP that talked about LCD TVs:

quote:

LCD TV's:

Disadvantages: Most companies require a lot of dead pixels before they will take them back under warranty. Blacks are more grey-ish and are not deep or rich true blacks. Lamp replacement is usually not convered under warranty and will sometimes hit in the $300 dollar price range within 2-4 years. Depending on the set, you can really get screwed if you do not watch for low reaction times. Preferably a 16 Ms reaction time would be good enough for most gamers, but if you are an enthusiast, you may want even lower.

So I noticed my Sony Bravia KDL46EX710 I got through a work accommodation is starting to have some brightness issues. Near the corners and some other areas near the edge of the screen it is noticeably brighter than in the center. This is mostly apparent in either dark scenes or when the infamous black bars appear.

Is this something that can either be fixed through firmware or repair? It's not a gigantic issue but I am much more of a snob about picture quality than I was a year ago when I got it (upgrading from a 24" SDTV to this). I read some Amazon reviews and it seems that some other people had the same problem.

My new 42 120hz Panasonic LCD has a few stuck green pixels right out of the box. I wouldn't care so much if it wasn't right in the lower middle of the screen. At first it was noticeable all the time but after some tweaking it now only shows up when the screen is fully black.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I've read that sometimes they fix themselves after a few weeks or that you can attempt to shake them loose with programs. Should I just attempt to get a new set? It was a online only deal through bestbuy so it might be a huge pain to ship back but I just got it today and I've heard they have a decent policy on these things.
