Have to say, DISH really doesn't provide a very good HD picture. I struggled with my new LG 6500 in regards to calibration, having only the satellite image to tweak to. I got it as clear as I could however. Last night I hooked up the Panasonic home theater/blu-ray system. Holy cow, I nailed the calibration. Picked up "Hannah" from red box and gave it a go. Image was amazing, sound was amazing. Now to figure out why nearly every DISH HD channel (there are few actual good quality ones) looks like compressed poo poo.

I am looking at buying a new HDTV soon...am I best off just waiting until the day after Christmas and springing on any super deals? Or is that not really a thing.

The sync issue is really annoying, but even aside from that I'm not blown away by the picture quality. This set needs some major calibration before the image looks good (it is bad straight out of the box), and even after it's tweaked I still favor my 4 year old Vizio 42" LCD which is hardly tweaked at all.

I'll preface by saying this is a gift they asked for, but... What's my options when looking for a wireless HDMI setup? I know they're stupid expensive, and I could easily get the job done with 25 foot cables and switches... I was looking at the Vizio wireless kit, and it seemed to be a decent deal at $175. Anything better/cheaper to go for?

The 42" LG LED at best buy is going for $550. After checking it out on the site, the reviews are horrible. I'm looking for something else in the similar size/price area but not sure which brands are decent and which ones to ignore.

Don't know about the LEDs, but I'd still check out the brand. Go look at sets in person -- TV reviews on the internet are ... largely misguided, to put it mildly. From the BB 42LV4400 reviews: samboslice posted:Picture wise its great you just have to be sure that if your getting an HDMI cable that its capable of the 120HZ instead of some that can only transmit 60HZ. Now the sound isnt the best, but you shouldnt expect it to be top notch since LG is not as advanced as lets say "Samsung" or "Sony." I'm looking to buy a 32" LCD HDTV with 1080p since it's the only size that will fit in my cabinet. Any recommendations and/or does anyone know of any sales for a TV that would fit those specifications?

The only thing limiting it's clarity and such is Dish Network's compressed signal on some channels. It is amazing in blu-ray. edit: cannot recall if it comes in a 42"

Well it was very unexpected but we ended up getting this one It's crazy awesome and our cable company is updating our box tomorrow, I was wondering what advice anyone had about adjusting the settings? I haven't had to mess with that kind of thing in a while, wasn't sure if I should wait a set amount of time or what.

So everything is hooked up, I've been trying out various movies and they look great. The only thing I have a question about is a screen dimming effect I've noticed. Ill switch up picture modes, and after a short time the screen begins to dim or darken. Is this a normal thing or some option in the menu? it seems darker than it should be.

Samsung TVs usually have some silly setting related to energy saving that will mess with the brightness and contrast levels, I forget the name but you can google that and disable it.

So my 46" ST30 from Amazon was shattered by their shipping monkeys. At any rate, gently caress buying a TV from Amazon Warehouse deals. It has been nothing but a pain in the rear end from the point of receiving it and finally having the idiots come get the broken one today. Instead, I wound up paying $670 locally for a 42" ST30 which while expensive for the size is more appropriate for my small apartment anyway. I've had the 42" for a week and it is beautiful now that it is just about broken in. Highly recommended.

Ugh yeah I do agree that while Amazon is awesome, the large item shipping companies are like the worst fly-by-night companies ever.

So my dad bought a Samsung un46d6900 from Best Buy. Is it just me or does this TV only exist at Best Buy? I can't find any reviews or other stores carrying it. On Amazon they have the un46d7000 and the 7900 and the 8000. The 7900 is about the same price, and the other two are cheaper. I'm assuming just because the numbers are higher these are better TVs. What's the deal with the 6900 and is there any reason he shouldn't just return it to Best Buy and pick up one of the other ones from Amazon? According to Samsung's website comparison tool they look pretty goddamn identical actually Elysium fucked around with this message at 03:13 on Dec 18, 2011 |

I would be worried about receiving it broken then waiting another week to get it. Got my 50 " st30 a few weeks ago and I love it. I did my break in slides for a few days and set it up. This tv has such a beautiful picture.

I did this maybe every other day overnight. Just make sure you run movies and videos in Full screen for the 100 hours. Seems like a lot of people recommend that. And trust me this TV is well worth it. And I got a great price here in Canada for it too.

The Gunslinger posted:Samsung TVs usually have some silly setting related to energy saving that will mess with the brightness and contrast levels, I forget the name but you can google that and disable it. The ecological settings were disabled on my Samsung out of the box, but they have a setting called "Shadow Detail" that auto-dims the screen during dark scenes. The higher you raise the setting the less dimming that occurs. For dark games like Batman and such, I hear it's pretty bad. On my game inputs I keep it at the highest settings but for movies and TV I keep it in the middle. I rather like the settings a poster in AVSforum wrote up: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=21168629#post21168629 I have a 6400 set and the settings work well on that as well. I would approve of it if these "highly regarded" loons on avs forum had a single shred of evidence to back it up. Also some of those guys make their living slightly changing values in service menus for money. The slides are pure snake oil and visual placebo. Really guys, your tv will not get magically better by running slides. Just watch the tv as normal and leave the brightness and contrast at modest levels. (On panasonics it's around 50-55) Virtually all of my first 100 hours of my tv was video games with static elements on the screen. Some people on avs would say I ruined my set, but guess what? Zero burn in and the set looks great. tl;dr, slides are the oxygen free cables of the plasma business. Really, gently caress avsforum. That is where the crazy go to die.

He posted screen shots and I could barely see anything. They tend to be very very nitpicky on there. But you do get a lot of good info at times.

I'm hoping someone can clear up my confusion. I currently own this TV, a Samsung PN42B450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN42B450-42-Inch-720p-Plasma/dp/B001ULBPAM It has a built in digital tuner ("Built-In Digital Tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM) The SAMSUNG plasma TVs have all the tuners you need for any type of cable service, including high definition.") Does that mean that I can go to my nearest Radio Shack and buy a $40 HD Antenna, hook it up to my TV, and have all the local channels in HD?

I'm looking at upgrading an older 32" Bravia LCD in a bedroom. I'm looking at Best Buy for buying it because I have a gift card from there. Best Buy's ad this week lists the Samsung UN40D6000S for $727. A 40" 1080p LED TV is pretty much what I'm looking for here, and the price is right. Any advice about this particular set, or any advice for other sets around that price range that I might want to look at instead of this?

Does anyone have any opinions on the Samsung Series 8 64" (PS64D8000)? I need to fill a big room, so was tossing up between this and the 65" Panasonic VT30. The Panasonic is much more expensive, though, and I'm wondering whether I'd see the difference, especially since I'm currently watching a CRT.

I don't mean to re-ask a question that's probably been asked a million times already, but I'd like to ply this thread for some recommendations on an HDTV for my parents. They're still stuck on an old CRT tube, and I'd like to get them a nice flatscreen for a reasonable price. My budget is no more than $700, and I'd prefer LCD/LED, bigger the better. Are there any sets which I should definitely stay away from? Any sets in particular around that price range that are recommended? I've been looking at some of the 42" LGs lately for around $600, but I'm wondering if there are better options out there.
