I'm really in the market for a new TV. Any recommendations on a nice, large(r) TV, or panels I should stay away from? Are there usually post-Christmas sales?

The worst part is how ESPN and a few other channels never have their logo/ticker go off the screen, even on the commercials. I have seen at stores the ESPN logo burned into the screen permanently. I dont give two shits about that channel so its not an issue for me. For people that do the same thing for 12 hours a day, yes plasmas are a bad choice. I have put 100+ hours now of gaming on my GT30 and have zero image retention. Then again I dont game for 8 hours straight either. The less you worry about image retention/burn in the less of an issue it actually is for normal use. If you are a sports fanatic that leaves it on ESPN for 24/7 then dont get a plasma. For people that watch a mix of games, movies and tv do not have to worry about image retention. Passing out with the tv on isnt an issue either. My Panasonic will turn off after 3 hours of inactivity anyways. Also most dvd players and other devices have screen savers that kick in when idle as well. He watches a lot of ESPN and does leave it on sometimes so I'm hesitant to push that one. I don't know what his total budget is, but I expect he wants to stay right around $400-600.

Argh! Was going to get a Samsung 37" D585 for a great price, but due to communication problems it didn't end up happening and it's not available any more. We don't really have space for 40" and 32" seems so small. Why is it so difficult to find something between 32 and 40 inches? If anyone has great ideas about what to look for for 400-500€ for gaming and movies I'd appreciate suggestions. To be honest, I've been kind of set on Samsung, but who else is good in that price range at that size?

If I have to go 32", so be it - but I'm still not sure whether being so focussed on Samsung's range is a bad idea. Are prices likely to drop after CES?

I'm guessing because 40" and 42" sets became affordable, so 37" sets became less relevant and the panel makers went in the direction of greatest demand. I expect you could hardly go wrong getting a Samsung, however I don't expect great things from any 32" set.

You might have Image Retention for a little , but that will go away fast. Just make sure pixel wobble is on. I have had mine for a few weeks now and seen a little IR here and there but it never lasts long. I did 8 hours of Battlefield 3 a few times and no problems at ALL ! For plasmas the critical time is the first 100 - 150 hours of the panel life. For those times it is suggested you watch in Fullscreen. I looked at both LED and Plasmas and I found the picture far more pleasing on my ST30.

I have had mine for a few weeks now and seen a little IR here and there but it never lasts long. No, burn in is still possible under extreme circumstances. I have seen floor models sit for months with varying content displayed on them, but still have the ESPN logo burned in. This happened on all brands. (LG, Samsung, Panasonic) If you have phosphors (like all plasma tv's do) there is a possibility for burn in. The reality is the vast majority of people (like you) will never have a single problem because you dont leave the ESPN logo on for 12 hours a day, every day. I would like to also point out that image retention and "burn in" are two different things. Image retention is temporary and will go away. Burn in is permanent. tl;dr: dont worry about burn-in. Enjoy your tv and use it as normal.

I just have to chime in that the Panasonic P55GT30 is gorgeous, even in a rather bright room with a south-facing window. I posted a couple months ago asking about ideas given we had a really bad room setup for TV's, and we eventually settled on the plasma. Lots of good info in this thread, and thankfully there is an equally large HT audio one to delve into now.

Just ordered the P50GT30 on Amazon in the UK. Can't wait for it to arrive, but it's seriously disappointing that we get screwed with the smaller range over here. Basically if you want to a Viera over 50" you're limited to the VT only, which is sort of ridiculous. I blame the smaller market and the ignorance of the consumers, but whatever - hopefully 50" plasma will tide me over until the next technology comes along. For any UKers looking for a decent deal on a Viera, Amazon are doing a deal until the 31st where you get a blu-ray player and 2 sets of glasses for like £25, and the GT30 is <£1000 which is the cheapest you can get in the UK currently. Get your orders in quick!

Can anyone point me to a good deal for an HD TV around $500-900 for a new apartment? I'll primarily be using it for HD cable - football and such - playing blu rays, and for some netflix streaming. I know there are tons of sales but it's my first TV purchase and the choices and variety of sales is overwhelming. I'm hoping for something in the 500 range, but I wouldn't hesitate paying more (up to around 900) for a good deal on a high quality TV that will last a while. Any advice is greatly appreciate, and feel free to PM me to take it out of thread. edit: I should mention that I'd rather not pay for 3D or smart-TV functions if I can avoid it, especially the 3D. The LG is cooler looking and the Panasonic has a more "true" picture? In my opinion the ST30 has a way better picture and darker blacks. Also from what I have seen in person and have read in reviews the LG gets image retention very quickly. You will be able to notice static images that have been on the screen retained even after a few minutes. They do go away and they are not permanent, but this does not really happen on the ST/GT/VT30 line of plasma's. I feel like the LG is way more likely to get burn-in. Also if it matters, I am pretty sure the LG is not 3d while the ST30 is. Really they are not even in the same class of tv's. The Samsung plasma sets compare much better to the Panasonic's. Also note if you get a Panasonic you are likely to have one that has the "fluctuating brightness" issue. Dont let that turn you off from the TV, Panasonic fixes it for free at your home. It takes a tech like 20 minutes to fix it. I like this review site, http://www.televisioninfo.com . They have a review on the LG, take a look.

I am looking to replace the ancient 27" CRT TV I have in my bedroom. I have allotted $500 to accomplish this, including a wall mount. As I've not seriously looked at TVs since I bought the LCD in my living room a couple of years ago, can anybody tell me what I should be looking at in terms of best bang for my buck? Sears has the Samsung LN40D503 for $429, which I've kinda been eyeing up. Can anybody tell me if this TV is worth it, or should I be looking at something else? Thanks.

I had a 47 inch rear projection back in 2003 which I ended up getting rid of in 2007. Since then I haven't owned a TV. I've been wanting to get a new one for awhile but it's been low on the priority list and I didn't want to blow money on a cheap piece of poo poo. I'm ready to get a new one that I'll won't want to upgrade for a long time, but I don't know exactly what I need. My main uses would be a PS3, Tivo, and movies, probably more on the video games side. Do I need a 120hz or greater TV? Is LED worth it or should I stick with LCD? What brands should I stick to? I hated burn in on my RPTV so I think I'd like to stay away from plasma. I think the 47 is a good size for me, I plan on being in an apartment for a good while and don't need anything bigger. I don't have a strict budget but I'd like to keep it below $1000 and the cheaper the better.

Haggins posted:Do I need a 120hz or greater TV? Is LED worth it or should I stick with LCD? What brands should I stick to? 120hz isn't needed but it is probably going to be a higher quality panel. LED sets are still LCD's. LCD's are unlit panels that display color, a light then shines behind them to give them light. That is provided by CCFL's or LED's. Get LED's if you can. They should have longer lifespan, use less power, and provide a higher quality backlight. SneakyCracker posted:I am looking to replace the ancient 27" CRT TV I have in my bedroom. I think LG has an LED LCD 42" for $529 or so. You can buy a mount for $12 off monoprice so it would only put you a bit over budget but you would get more hdmi ports, led backlighting, and a larger display.

Has anyone had any experience with Element brand tvs? I was looking for something that was a fair balance of quality/price in the 50 inch range and I noted this. I've been combing the reviews on tiger direct, newegg, and some other weird places but I've seen such a mix of reviews between "great value!" and, "broke completely after 6 months.". I figured I'd see if any goons have ever had any experience with this brand since I myself have never really heard of them.

I need help goons. My trusty Panasonic 42 inch, 720p plasma TV died after 5 years of being awesome. I initially replaced it with a Samsung 46 Inch 1080P LED TV (UN46D6050 for $899.99 with incredible picture quality, and really nice sound. After a few days I noticed seem fairly bad backlight bleeding in the corners, and that there was an insane amount of remote lag when using any app. It also seemed to have some issues running the netflix program, but nothing too horrible. Ultimately I felt that I might regret not jumping on the 3D bandwagon since there were other TVs with 3D at the same price point. That lead me to pick up a 47 inch LG 1080p Passive 3D LED (47lw5300 for $899.99) to compare. I figured with the lenient costco return policy I would be able to do some direct comparison. I was really wowed by the 3D effect when messing with some PS3 games, and even when using the 2D to 3D conversion. However the sound quality is pretty atrocious, and the image quality is just lifeless and not at all up to par with the Samsung. Colors seem drab, and it feels like I am looking at everything through a haze. I love the feature set, and price point, but I don't understand how this TV can have such overwhelmingly positive reviews. I really like the color quality with plasmas, and I adore the picture quality of the Samsung UN46D6050, but I do feel like I want 3D, and the addition of a full browser, or even less laggy apps would be nice. Is there any sub $1,100, preferably passive-3D set that can meet my needs? I can't even find a good blog or website that offers reliable/non-biased reviews for current generation 3D televisions. Basically, I'm looking for a way to get 1080p with my old-rear end 360. I tried my component cable but it only works up to 1080i (which is what happens with most HDTV's, supposedly). Through VGA, the resolution outputs up to 1680x1050 but not 1080p. Is there some sort of VGA->HDMI connection I can use to get 1080p working (maybe VGA->DVI->HDMI) or does a solution for this not exist? Not all TV's will accept 1080p over component. To answer UncleGuito's other question, there is no good way to go from VGA->HDMI. It would be a better idea to just upgrade your 360. The few cheap converters you might find will have worse quality than just using VGA on your TV at 1360x768. Here is a cheap one you can try, but the reviews aren't exactly glowing: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011404&p_id=6191&seq=1&format=4#feedback evilalien fucked around with this message at 16:34 on Jan 5, 2012 |

The picture still looks great at 1366x768, but I think component actually may look better at 1080i (which was opposite on my last 720p set). Edit: I also just read that the 1st generation 360 component cables only transmit up to 1080i- is this true?
