Just got a Toshiba 40E210U 40" and it was fine while gaming for hours.. then I turned it back on after a break and the picture was all hosed up and flickering, regardless if theres a source connected or not. I just see like 20 lines of "HDMI 1" scanning up and down. Wtf? edit I just spammed the menu options without even being able to make anything out and the picture came back. Is there a certain setting that messes something up? Was it because my 360 was set to full depth HDMI or whatever? I'm cheap and looking at the Vizio E371VA http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1875200&CatId=3649 120hz interests me, but this review: http://www.televisioninfo.com/content/Vizio-M320VT-LED-LCD-HDTV-Review/Motion.htm says that 3:2 pulldown performance was lackluster, which confuses me a bit since 120hz are supposed to avoid the whole 3:2 pulldown problem altogether I thought? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I have a 55" ST30. I live in Florida (no clouds, bright annoying sun every day) and there's a huge window across from the tv. On mid brightness and mid panel backlight it's fine on a really sunny day. It can be extremely bright if you need it to.

Word, that looks like good info. I don't know if I can find a 1080p plasma in my size / price range so I am thinking of going with the LED backlit 32" Vizio on TD for 330. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1728220&CatId=5988 I live in a real small pad, viewing distance is going to be minimal and space is lacking, so 32 should be fine I think.

What's your total budget? I would stretch it a bit to get at least a 40" unless you're literally sitting 5 feet from the TV. A lot of people tend to have buyer regret with 32" and smaller TVs unless its for a bedroom or dorm. If you can only spend $400-500 then theres no way you can get a decent 1080p plasma but at least you could up the size a bit for something you will hang onto for awhile.

I'm looking for something around 40" in the $500-$600 range. Right now I'm leaning towards this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OOS35C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER My plan was to get a seperate sound system and a ps3 that I'll use for netflix so I won't need any ethernet or wireless. I've been keeping an eye on amazon and newegg for a few weeks now but nothing is really popping out at me. The LG has good reviews and I'm just about ready to buy it but I just want another opinion.

My viewing distance is like 6 feet. I don't plan on making the TV a centerpiece or focus of the room, we don't watch much TV except for the odd episode of whatever after work and dinner and stuff. Video games (wii mostly) will be played probably. Up until this point we've been TV-less altogether, just putting a 15" laptop on a table and putting it in front of the couch. Anything is going to be an upgrade really. I'm leaning towards an LED-lit 60hz 1080p unit, 37 to 42 maybe. 32 does maybe seem a bit small.

For $500ish you can probably just grab any number of 40-42" LED/LCD models from LG and Samsung on sale.

Welp I think its time to put down my venerable 60" Sony LCD Projection. Picture starting to turn blue-ish and this is with a relatively new replacement bulb. Im thinking about going bigger, maybe one of those Mitsubishi 73" DLPs, but the reviews on them seem kinda mixed. I would like to get something at least 65" or bigger without spending more than about 2k, but the cheaper the better.

Was out running errands last night and found this at Best Buy for $360 + tax: http://www.televisioninfo.com/content/LG-37LK450-LCD-HDTV-Review.htm LG 37LK450, it lacks the features i was originally looking at but makes up for it by having a really nice picture. Black levels are not the greatest as the review says but I only notice when I try, the rest of the time I'm too busy being happy with everything else. It's on clearance at Best Buy and around the web it seems, I had to ask the manager to match another stores price since they hadn't themselves lowered it yet. They did it without any drama though. If you're looking for a 37 with a nice picture under 400bux + tax it's not a bad deal I think. I don't have a proper 1080p source yet but it's making anything i give it look really good anyway. Thanks for the advice, it definitely helped make my decision easier. r.y.f.s.o. fucked around with this message at 17:54 on Feb 25, 2012 |

Well. Bought a 47" LG LED just before Christmas, the 47LV4400, and it's crapped out. Won't turn on at all, and now there are a bunch of reviews on Bestbuy.com and Futureshop.ca with people who are having the same problem. I read lots of reviews before I bought it, but since January a lot of people are having theirs break down on them. My wife talked to LG Customer Service and they're supposed to have someone come here on Wednesday, so we'll see how that goes, but just a heads up if anyone here's looking at that particular TV.

Wow you weren't kidding, I just had a look and there are a lot of people with that same problem. Where are you in Canada? I know a few good repair companies in the GTA/Niagara if LG fucks you around on the warranty.

Vancouver Island, so a little far away. We should be fine for the warranty, as it's only been 2 months, and it hasn't been abused in any way. I'm just concerned that it might happen again, and the warranty won't be valid or something. Damned. For now I guess it's Assassin's Creed on a 19" CRT. Or I can just read a book.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P46S30 46-Inch 1080p 600 Hz Plasma HDTV http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004M8SBGG/ Finally pulled the trigger on this last week, it was $750 w free shippping (non-3D because who gives a gently caress). The reviews are pretty heavily mixed and seem to disagree on the level of customizability as far as picture adjustment goes. I'm in a similar situation as a lot of you and am looking for a ~40" for ~$500, but I don't know if I only have that price range in mind because horribly lovely TVs are getting dumped by stores and skewing my search results. I'm not gonna be watching tons of movies or HDTV or anything, mostly just game consoles and whatever shows I stream through my laptop. That's my main concern, actually: I'll probably have it hooked up to my laptop most of the time but I don't know if that means I need to be looking for something specific.

That's my main concern, actually: I'll probably have it hooked up to my laptop most of the time but I don't know if that means I need to be looking for something specific. Most of the crap amazon reviews are to do with the apparently lovely sound- I'm not really a sound guy and I got a soundbar for it anyway, so whatever. It has optical audio out which gives you good options for sound like the vizio vsb200 ($70 shipped refurb from tigerdirect on ebay). Another class of reviews are to do with the tv dying, mine hasn't died yet, if it does hopefully it's in the first year while it's under warranty. As far as picture adjustment, it's limited. You DO get "just scan" which means 1:1 pixel mapping, which is important for really everything nowadays. The new one I got from amazon does display a 1920x1080 VGA/DVI signal edge to edge when on the 16:9 setting (I had a refurb before this that failed to do that, I returned it). First off I turned off engergy saving which put the LED to max. Aside from that you get to adjust the brightness, contrast, color, tint, color temperature (cool/med/warm), and gamma (low/med/high). A bunch of the advanced adjustment things are grayed out, for example "sharpness" whatever that is. Maybe LG's more advanced TVs let you adjust the sharpness of a 1:1 pixel representation digital signal? I don't even know what that would do, I think it's silly, but it's grayed out and you can't play with it. I have a calibration DVD that I can use and report back if you're curious, but it looks fine and I'm happy with it as-is. Overall? I wanted a low power high refresh rate TV I could hook to my xbmc apple tv and computer, and it does that pretty well.

I'm looking to get a new set for an RV, and in this case the single most important spec for me is width. I absolutely cannot have a cabinet wider than 40". I have found this Westinghouse at Best Buy, but reviews seem to be kind of mediocre. Any other recommendations based on the above? Budget is ~$450-$500

The 2012's have a better bezel design and improved glare filters for bright rooms. I'm not sure about the other stuff. I ended up a with a 2011 ST30 and couldn't be happier, people warned me the bezel was thick and ugly but its perfectly fine. Hell it's thinner than the LCD it replaced. I use mine in a moderately lit room and it's fine unless the sun is reflected right onto the screen and even matte finishes would have problems there. The 2011 stock is being bled off quickly so if you can get a good deal I'd go for it. Just keep in mind that anything manufactured before May 2011 might need the FBR firmware fix. It's pretty painless, Panasonic sends a dude out to do it and it takes all of 5 minutes.

Hmm. I'd definitely take the dive on a more expensive set for improved glare filters. That's my chief concern. I don't have a window shining RIGHT ON my TV, but it's a bright room. Thanks for the heads-up!

I bought a 47LV5400 about 6 months ago from the Futureshop at Park Royal in Vancouver and talked the guy into giving me a cheap 3 year waranty for $50 - but I was pretty sure it came with a 1 year futureshop waranty anyway. Basically, he said if anything goes wrong, call Futureshop and don't even bother with LG and trying to cash in on their waranty. FS will send someone to your house to check it out and either fix whatever is wrong, or if it's going to be too expensive to fix, he said they'd just give you another TV of your choosing thats going for whatever price you originally paid. I'm almost hoping mine dies on me in a year or two, cos with the way technology works, I'll be able to get a way better set for that price by then. But you should really give Futureshop a call and see if you have any options available there before you let LG hamfist their way through dealing with it.

I didn't. I figure the one year manufacturer warranty would do the trick, so that's what I'm using. Called back today and now it'll be Monday when the repair folks come, but they should have the part they need on that day, so hopefully all goes well. Fingers crossed.

Zenzirouj posted:Is there a particular store (online or brick) that's particularly good for buying from? Whether by generally having the best prices or selection or etc? It depends on where you are. Amazon in the US is pretty good but for very large TVs the delivery service can be hit and miss since its subcontracted out to whoever you have available locally. If you're in Canada it's a whole different ballpark and you have to shop around a lot, I prefer local shops.

Well, the Panasonic Vieras as a whole have pretty top-notch ratings. Modern video games don't benefit from 1080p, honestly, so 720p would be dandy. I'd be inclined to snag it, if it's geared toward gaming
