Here is the right half of my future apartment:![]() I'm planning to mount a TV on the wall that's 73" long. Floor-to-ceiling windows form the entire 'wall' at the bottom of the blueprint from the rightmost wall until the 9.25" jut. Will I regret buying a plasma TV? The apartment's in Brooklyn on the 9th Floor of a building. The aforementioned windows face south. I don't watch a lot of TV, and we have blinds if the sun's too much to handle. The reason I ask is because this TV's just too good of a deal to pass up: http://www.amazon.com/LG-42PA4500-4...RVV4XPKGQ1JP5TH e: By the way, that TV is only 720p. Given my viewing distance, about 12' or so, that should be fine, even streaming via a computer or Apple TV, playing a PS3, or running MLB.tv off a computer or Apple TV, right? abelwingnut fucked around with this message at 02:58 on May 14, 2012 |

So I've been looking for a cheap 46 to 55 inch tv and right now the two I've really been checking out are: An LG 50" plasma: http://www.bjs.com/lg-50-full-hd-1080p-600hz-plasma-truslim-bezel-tv.product.215903?dimId=2000158 and this 46" sharp LCD http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A5698466&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch The dell sale on the sharp probably ends tonight so I'm kinda spergin out, any input would be great. The Sceptre actually looks kinda neat if I wasn't convinced everything sold by walmart is infused with evil and poisonous chemicals. On another note, my father got one of these and is in love with it but it seems way too cheap to be any good http://www.sears.com/seiki-55inch-lcd-tv-sc552gs/p-05726356000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1 His eye sight is kinda going so I'm not sure his judgement on picture quality would be the best.

It's definitely a great looking TV for the price. Picture quality was a little dark in person compared to the nearby Samsung plasma & LED TVs. The brightness was increased but to me it still looked a little dark. The surface is glass so there is a little bit of a reflective glare in the picture. Nothing too bad if you have shades on your windows. I'm seriously considering purchasing one next week. FYI the $100 instant rebate only lasts until June 17th.

Not sure if this should have gone in a new thread but figured id play it safe and ask here. The issue is I have two pixel size whiteish spots on the LCD of my TV. They are not dead pixels however as they are still there when TV is off. I have tried the following to remove them - 1)Microfiber smooth side + Cleansafe Screen cleaner. 2)Microfiber slightly rougher side + Cleansafe Screen cleaner. Both the above dry as well, and with as much force as I dare use. 3)Alcohol based glasses wipes. 4)A fresh screen protector for a mobile phone to try and "lift" the spots off by applying it as i would to a phone screen then peeling it off. All of the above have had no effect at all. Never seen anything like these things before and am completely lost as to what to do. Anyone have any suggestions/advice ? TV is a few years old so out of warranty, but Ive cleaned it many times over the years(and always in exactly the same way) and never had any issue till now.

Want to hear something rage inducing? I have a Samsung HLR6768W, and a few weeks ago I was watching TV and suddenly the lamp turned off and the fans/color wheel spun up to ultra fast. I unplugged the TV as fast as I could and tried to figure out wtf. After unplugging the: Dmd board Switch board Digital Board I came to the conclusion that it was the analog board. The analog board you see, distributes power to the entire TV, including the digital/dmd/switch/fans/color wheel etc etc. I also came to this conclusion that if I plug the TV in, it immediately turns on EVERYTHING, without my intervention, and without the door switch taped down. So I proceed to order another analog board from shopjimmy.com (great site btw.) It came today, and I plug it into my friends TV first and foremost, because 1) I didn't know if it was the power supply, and 2) He has the same TV as I do. It did the same loving thing. So either something else is very wrong, or uh, I got another analog board with the exact same problem.

So my Panasonic stopped working today and, thinking that the cost to repair will be a few hundred dollars, I've started shopping around new TVs. I'd like to get the best 'quality' 1080P TV I can for under $1,000. I don't think I'll ever use the 3D functions and I have an XBox so the online features aren't really important either. The few TVs I think look best are the following: Panasonic P50U50 Panasonic P50UT50 Samsung 51E550 LG 50PZ550 Does anyone else have these or looked at these? Is there a better option out there that I'm not finding?

Is the LG 50PM4700 as good of a deal as it looks especially with a second pair of glasses free? Right now I'm using a Vizio 32" LCD, and my viewing distance is about ten feet. I don't NEED to upgrade, but if that deal will last a little bit, I'd pick one up.

DLP TV's don't really have any advantages over LCD and Plasma that I am aware of other than being relatively cheap if you want a loving huge TV. Picture quality, motion tracking, and viewing angles are all generally better on LCD/Plasma. Having to replace the disposable lamp periodically also adds to the cost of DLP. From what I can tell Mitsubishi is the last major manufacturer of DLP's and the smallest they currently make is 73". A used one is that much closer to needing a new lamp. Panasonic plasmas are generally regarded as having the best picture quality. I've been very happy with mine. It's only a 720p 42", but it's been great.

There is a reason why DLPs are used at every theater in the USA. They offer the best quality picture, and a lot of the problems people associate with them are from 2004 - 2007. Anything past that has great blacks and great whites with a full range of colors and a incredibly high contrast ratio. Also a new bulb runs 40 - 50$ at shopjimmy.com

The DLP's used in theaters are very different from the dlp's used in your Mitsubishi set. They are front projection and have a different dlp chip for each color. They are also much much brighter. The problems with DLP's in homes like limited viewing angles do not occur in theaters. You should really never use the argument that theaters use dlp's as a reason to buy a RP DLP for your home.

While that may be true, DLP's have come a very long way since the early 2000's when they were being made by samsung/RCA/Mitsubishi. I have had several samsung DLP's and anything past 2007 worked great. The viewing angles aren't bad either. That said, if I could spend money willy nilly on a new TV it would be Mitsubishis laser TV, because lasers.

When my Samsung DLP from 2007 dies, I'll be really, really sad. Not because I've poured money into it or anything (just $50 for a new bulb after 4 years), just because I love the way stuff looks on it. After that, I'll just give in and get an LCD or projector. ![]() I actually posted about having white dots recently - obvious DLP chip issue. Samsung sent a tech out to fix that for me for free due to a recall. That + a new lamp makes me feel like I have a brand new TV.

That looks great! The only other issue with it will be the color wheel, which can be bought for 60 - 100$ and changed out quite easily by you. In the 2007 models it takes me about 10 minutes to do. On the older models 15 - 20.

All you 60PA6500 owners that were chiming in a few back, report in! I've been loving this set. I'm not an aficionado by any stretch, but like to think I have an eye for a quality tv. Once I applied some AVS forum settings (that were not fueled by insanity) I think I have what could be the best picture for my dollar. Only thing I wish it had was a built in TV guide like my old Sammy HLR6167 did as I'm piping in a cable line straight into it. Have to have the TV Guide app on my iPhone.

I've heard of the louder buzz problems being a defect, Panasonic is pretty good with their warranty service so I would contact them. My ST30 had a defective A board and they subcontracted a local repair guy who had it all fixed up in no time once the part arrived.

I'm in the market for a TV. I've never owned an HDTV, and in fact still have the piece of poo poo ~24 inch CRT I took to college more than 10 years ago. So this whole process is new to me, would love any input. Desires: * Less than $900 * 50ish inch screen * Do not care about 3D in the slightest * Don't care about "smart" features since it seems every Blu-Ray player on earth has the same abilities, but wouldn't turn them down Usage: * We don't have cable and don't plan to anytime soon * Watching a lot of Netflix/Hulu/MLB.tv * Blu-Rays and gaming (plan to buy a PS3 at the same time) * Couch is about 18 feet from the TV stand I had a few 50" plasmas all picked out but after going into Best Buy to look at them, the glare from the store lighting was VERY noticeable. The LED's seemed subjectively much less affected. The TV will sit in a room with many west-facing windows so glare will be a major factor even with the shades down I expect. It sounds like an LED set is the best way to go in this case? Is that the case or one of those outdated HDTV "facts"? Went back to the drawing board, and it looks like the Panasonic L47E50 is literally the only set that fits my requirements (barring a sweet sale somewhere). Any opinions on that line from Panasonic? Seems well reviewed. I'd like something a bit bigger but it looks like for LED's the next size is 55" and they run like $500 more than I can spend. Are there any other well regarded sets I'm missing? Thanks for any input. Edit: Westinghouse LD-5580Z looks interesting, but not familiar with the brand. Docjowles fucked around with this message at 07:24 on May 23, 2012 |

As I said, DLPs get a bad rap from people having lovely expierances before 2007 with them. What do you mean a color wheel on a electric bearing spinning at 7 - 9k rpm is a bad thing? Also lovely electrolytic capacitors and bottom of the barrel voltage regulators break often? You don't say!

Mitsubishi has been going it alone for years now. I'm not saying DLP is poo poo, but if they offered the best picture quality and were competitively priced then somebody would still be making them in sizes smaller than 73". And if I had room for a TV that size I would love to just get a DLP projector and just do a full theater room instead.

I'm not married to the technology by any means, but I do like them - especially over similarly priced plasmas from the same time. (and possibly even the lower-mid range current models, though I haven't looked at them) I tried Google but couldn't figure anything out.

From what I've read it is a combination of consumer perception about the bulkiness and maintenance costs, and no clear compelling reason to choose RP DLP over LCD/Plasma other than cost. As LCD and Plasma got cheaper, that advantage eroded away as LCD/Plasma chased DLP up the size categories. Yeah what Mitsubishi makes now is nice, but it's not practical for most people.

I closed my thread and reposted here... I purchased a Panasonic P46ST30 3D Plasma TV back in November/December of 2011. We haven't had any issues with it, but all of a sudden after having it on a few minutes the picture will flash and the color becomes distorted. (lines of green, red, blue, pink snow). If I turn it off and turn it back on it'll be fine for a few more minutes then back to the same. (Note: this is on the TV itself, there's no HDMI cables or anything that would be causing it. I've also removed the power plug and placed it in another socket so I don't think that's an issue.) I went ahead and contacted Panasonic, but its been difficult to find people with similar problems, except for a few youtube problems. I'll post a video at some point. Also I had a question about the warranties through Squaretrade. Their website states two different things: as long as theres 30 days of warranty left http://www.squaretrade.com/how-long-do-i-have-buy-squaretrade-care-plan and you can only purchase within 90 days of buying the product http://www.squaretrade.com/warranty-buyer-faq Have any of you guys purchased after the 90 day period and if so have they fought you on any returns/problems?
