My Panasonic TC-P42G25 seems to have bit the dust. No picture. The power LED started blinking 4 times for a bit then went to 1 and now blinks 10 times. I've unplugged everything. Left it off four a few hours. Tried different outlets on the surge protector, tried different outlet.

I've had it a couple years but I signed up for an extended warranty through Square Trade. I just filed the claim today.

So here I am back in this thread trying to learn if Panasonic's current plasma line is still the go to.

They don't make high end 42" this year. The UT50 AFAIK comes in 42" and has a good panel but is lacking a lot of the features of the ST50 and above. The ST30 is last year's version and came in 42" if you can somehow find one of those otherwise if you want to go bigger, the ST50 is supposed to be even better.

I have a 42" ST30 and it's an incredible TV. Panasonic plasma is still king in my book.

It's covered in the FAQ thread, but I think you're talking about frame interpolation or "motion blur." I just looked it up because my friend was complaining about it on his TV; just turn the feature off and it goes back to a classic cinematic look.

Yeah, each brand has their own name for it. At it's heart it's "interpolation" which is the smoothing between frames. We're used to a cinematic look having 24 frames per second, and a Sitcom or Soap Opera having 30 frames per second.

This "interpolation" for all intents and purposes takes 24 frames per second and tries to add extra information between those frames which makes it seem like the content you're used to being "cinematic" now looks like a "soap opera."

TruMotion, CineMotion, Auto Motion, AMP...those are all names for it.

They are often mislabeled or coupled with the "120Hz" feature on lots of marketing stickers and labels. They are not the same. 120Hz is the framerate of the tv and is NOT changeable. The motion interpolation poo poo is a tacky gimmick that is able to be turned off in the options menus.

I find that phenomenon kind of psychologically fascinating. It makes things look like you're really there instead of watching through a lens, so in theory it should be better / more realistic. But we're so used to how film looks that the increased clarity comes off as fake and amateurish. I kinda wonder if we'll be fudging recordings to have the properties of film decades after it's fallen out of use or if kids growing up with higher resolutions and frame rates will get used to it.

But anyway thought experiments aside I agree, screw that feature for anything except live sports. It looks like rear end.

Most Plasmas these days have anti-reflective filters that make them not so bad, but that LG model you are linking to in particular is actually pretty much the worst in the market in regards to glare if that's your concern.

Not a whole lot. SmartTV basically includes the same sort of applications you'd find in a Smart Blu-Ray player (minus actual Blu-Ray playback of course). But honestly..in my own limited personal experience both SmartTVs and Smart Blu-Ray players are clunky and lovely and slow compared to a tiny hockey puck sized standalone box like a Roku.

Things may have improved over the past year, but I'd urge you to try those UI's in the store if possible. I hate them.

Wait, so they don't make Smart TV's with blu-ray players integrated in? I was hoping I could "just" buy a TV and simplify things, and not have wires going everywhere, but that's not a big deal.

I basically want something to watch Breaking Bad and DVD movies and Youtube with my roommates. My mind is more on the content than on the screen. It would be cool if it had that shiny new high sharpness/contrast look, but I'm not at all an enthusiast (no offense to people who are) or into turning picture quality into a pissing contest or anything, I'm just kind of ambivalent - only looking for 30-40 inches anyway. I do understand from the OP that there's stuff to watch out for regarding quality like downscaling, and that there might be even more now that the OP is old, but in general the most important things to me are the online streaming options.

What's the best route to go if I'm willing to spend maybe $300-$400 and use craigslist? Would I get a better deal and better TV if I just bought seperate devices for each function?

No you're not really going to find a TV with a Blu-Ray player built in. And at 3-400 you aren't getting a smart tv at all anyway (even on craigslist). Why do you want to use Craigslist anyway? Just buy a 40" TCL + Blu-Ray player with smart features from Amazon for around $400.

I ended up getting the Samsung UN50EH6000 on sale for $900 at Costco, after a horrible experience attempting to buy the exact same unit from Amazon for more money (would recommend never buying a television from Amazon after that). Is the Panasonic U50 a good plasma TV? I don't need 3D, or smart TV since all my electronics I'd plug in do the same stuff. My only concern is the picture quality, and since it is their low rung set, I was wondering if there is a real difference between it and one of the more advanced sets like the ST50.

I'm assuming the U50 is the non 3d version of the UT50?

The UT50 differs a bit from the ST50.

First, it doesn't have an Infinite Black Pro panel. It has last year's G15, not this year's G15 NeoPlasma.

The second area is that anything lower than the ST50 doesn't have the anti-glare filter.

So, in the end, the blacks and contrast isn't going to be quite as good and it will have more reflections on the screen if you use with in an area with ambient light.

I have an LG 42LE5300. I was playing some Xbox and there was a lightning strike nearby. The power didn't go out, but the Xbox and the TV went out but remained powered up. I turned off the power strip they were plugged in to and then turned it back on after a couple minutes. I then powered up the devices. Here are the problems I can see with the TV.

- No audio from the speakers. I have a headphone jack on the side of the tv, and audio works through it. I don't have any other equipment to test any of the other audio outputs.

- On screen menu and the LG logo that bounces around the screen do not show up on the top third of the screen.

- Cable box is connected through HDMI. When I turn the TV to HDMI mode, it gets the "No Signal" deal. I've tried moving the HDMI to a different connection and nothing changes. I don't have any other HDMI equipment to test, so I'm not sure the problem isn't in the cable box itself.

So, do people still take TV's in for repair? I found a TV repair shop near me on Google Maps and they have the LG logo on their site. What am I looking at as far as a bill might be? I'd call them but they're not open until Monday.

I'm currently torn between two sets.

One is the Panasonic VIERA TC-L42E50, which I've seen some people say they have and are pleased with. This is $600 on Amazon right now. I like the price, the number of pleased reviews it has, and the potential for a bright screen without much glare.

The other is the LG 50PA5500, which is currently at Best Buy for $650. It's larger and a plasma, which I hear will offer better black levels. However, I am worried about glare. The TV would never receive direct light from outside but the living room area can be bright in the middle of the day.

I'm also curious about weight - just how heavy is the plasma going to be? I have a crappy TV stand that has had no problem holding my current 40" LCD, but I hear that plasmas are up to twice as heavy. If that's the case I'm not sure my stand will hold it.

I've only seen IR twice.

Once was the netflix logo when I was screwing around in the netflix menus for a solid few minutes just browsing stuff.

The second time was pillarboxing IR when I was watching 4:3 material for a prolonged period without using the gray bars.

Both instances were only noticeable on a gray background and both cleared up within a minute or two.

I really haven't gamed much on the TV though so I can't comment from that perspective.

I'm yet to see it even after playing FIFA for a couple of hours. I haven't burned it in either, just put it on and enjoy.

If you can afford the step up from the UT to the ST, I highly reccommend it. Its worth it just for the filter and wifi.

I really apologise if this has been asked before, but a 306-page thread is a little daunting.

My current TV has started to develop a defect where it has a purple line running down the left side of the screen for a while when I turn it on, which I've heard is a problem that only gets worse and can't really be repaired due to replacement panels not existing for 3-and-a-half-year-old TVs, so I'm looking for something new. Would anyone here be able to tell me whether or not Samsung's 40" ES6700 model is worth getting over the cheaper 40" ES6200 model (or if there is anything superior in a similar price range)? I'd really appreciate some assistance with this.

I have an ST30 from last year and I play games all the time on it, no burn in or IR to speak of. A buddy of mine has an LG plasma that gets some light IR once in awhile but he really abuses the thing (4 hour sessions of CoD) and its usually gone in a minute of watching something.

I guess I'm another "full speed ahead!" vote for the ST50. Absolutely stunning. I set it up yesterday and watched KFP2, Tangled, Sleeping Beauty, and Captain America. Absolutely gorgeous on all fronts. At first, after so many people said they had gotten the larger ones, I was wondering whether or not I had made a mistake going with the 50". Of course I am in a NYC apartment so...
