I'm researching the line of Panasonic plasma sets, and from high end to entry level, the order goes like this: VT -> GT -> ST -> UT Correct, that's the order of the sets. ST is considered the sweet spot, especially if you are going to get it calibrated. VT, GT, and ST all use the same panel with the VT and GT having more shades of grey processing, but I don't even think they've been able to measure that with pro equipment during calibration so it's pretty much a useless feature. The GT also has a dual core processor where the ST only has a single core. That just translates to slightly faster smart apps. Other than that, the GT has THX modes which are just specific presets that you can set to get a decent picture. That's only useful if you don't want to tweak the picture yourself. ST and GT calibrated in the same manner should yield exactly the same picture quality. VT has more adjustments and more custom preset modes. It also has 96hz input for 24fps handling. The UT is using last year's panel and lacks the anti-glare filter the other three models have. It's still a pretty decent bargain, but only if you can really control the ambient light in a room.

Like everything else it's pretty much become a bullet point for advertising. If you were buying 4 pairs of glasses then that might send a different message. It's a great TV, don't worry about the 3D part.

Alright guys, I could use some help. I live in a tiny little apartment and in order to save space I'd like to get a TV I can mount on the wall. That means its time for the old-as-poo poo CRT to go! I am more or less always broke, so I'm hoping to spend $200 or less, though if what I get for my money jumps up enough I could be convinced to go to $300 or so. It will be used mostly for watching Netflix and the San Francisco Giants. I'm not sure exactly how far away my couch is from the wall I'd be putting the TV on, but I estimate it is in the 12-15 foot range (it is a long, thin room and trying to set up the couch/tv the other way greatly reduces the usable space in the room). There is a south-south-east facing window that is directly opposite where the TV will hang. The wall space would probably be best suited for something in the 26"-32" range, I think. Any recommendations?

I've been looking at the following 55" LED models. I plan to use it for video from my computer and PS3 games. (Costco links): Vizio 3D, M3D550KD, $1200 Vizio non-3D, M550SL, $1100 (dynamic contrast ratio 200,000:1? Can this be right?) Samsung SmartTV, UN55ES6150F, $1450 Samsung non-SmartTv, UN55EH6050F, $1170 Panasonic, TC-55LE54, 1100 Currently, I'm looking at the first one, the Vizio 3D TV. I'm not really interested in the 3D aspect of the first model but the non-3D one is only $100 cheaper, a worse response time (8 vs 5.5 ms of the first), but louder speakers (for what it's worth) and apparently a 36 pound stand that weighs more than the TV itself? "Weight: 65.9 lbs (w/stand) 29.9 lbs (w/out stand)" The Samsung doesn't look like it's worth the extra $250. Its advantages, as I can see, is that it's 20 lbs lighter and comes with a swivel stand. I don't see any advantage to the other Samsung or the Panasonic. So, my questions: 1. Is my basic comparison fairly sound? For example, did I miss anything on the Samsung to make it worth the extra $250? Did I miss any deal-breakers on the Vizio? 2. Is there another model I should be looking at for a 55"-ish, give-or-take, LED TV? (I'd like to avoid plasma.) 3. Should I consider another technology, e.g. traditional LCD? 4. Closest I would sit to the TV is maybe 12 feet, is 55" too big at that distance? TIA. totalnewbie fucked around with this message at 03:38 on Jul 24, 2012 |

My girlfriend finally said "I wish we had a TV" which I guess means it's time! Anyone have suggestions for -37-42" -up to $500 -no glare (we have a very bright apartment, there's no way we could set a TV up that wasn't opposite a frequently-sunlit window) Smart features are not important (we'll mostly be hooking a computer up to it). I've generally preferred LCDs that I've seen but don't have any type preference. Having perfect dark blacks and pro-level colors are not important, we're just not active users. I just want a decent screen for a decent price. Any guidance, goon friends?

Other than making sure of mounting patterns, weight restrictions, and the like, is there anything I should know before buying a wall mount? I just ordered a cheap 32" LCD and want to put it on the wall. Mounts seem to range from $15 up over $100 and I'm not sure what makes the difference. On another note, the house it will be installed in is over 100 years old. I assume the age of the house means I can't rely on there being studs every 16 inches. The wall it is going on has wood paneling of some sort, but I don't know if it can be trusted to hold up a 20lb TV if there are no studs where I need them.

Background: I'm coming from a 57" 1080i Toshiba RPCRT which served well, but it's time to evergreen. I'm a hockey fanatic. I have a couple year old 50" LG plasma from WalMart that I sometimes watch hockey on. I don't enjoy it as much as I did the RP monster because things such as the boards are really sharp until the camera starts panning, then nasty blur on camera movement, then noticeable sharpening effect as soon as the camera stops moving. I don't know if this is characteristic of plasma or of buying stuff at WalMart. I've never really spent much time watching games on LCD, but I really really want a 70" Sharp Aquos. It's big. Bigg. I've read on avsforum that there's a "dirty screen effect" that troubles these sets when showing a lot of white on-screen. This concerns me. I'd be willing to consider a 65" set. Any hockey fans care to chime in on a good candidate? Budget is around $2.5-3k. Edit: Went with a LG 65LM6200 LED LCD 3D 120Hz set. Veinless fucked around with this message at 22:23 on Jul 29, 2012 |

What's the deal for TVs in Australia? Budget is about $900 ideally, absolute max of $1300. Looking for something in the 50/55" range, 3D/smart features are unimportant. Going to be used with a HTPC mostly and some regular TV watching, console gaming/occasional pc gaming might be done as well. Had a look at the ST50s, couldn't find one cheaper than $1400 for a 50". Whingepool was the usual mix of unhelpful elitists oxygen-free-cable types and brand fanboys. Ozbargain is empty.

I picked up a 55" LG smart tv with the little wiimote looking deal, and while it looks great and the 2d-3d conversion is really cool, the apps for it are severely lacking (and confusing across regions) and often functionally broken. So I bought a panasonic 50 inch g10 about 2 years ago (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Series-TC-P50G10-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B001UAEWUS) and recently the board blew up. I am working with geek squad to try and get a new board sent but if it isn't here by Thursday I supposedly get a new tv. I have been out of the loop for a while so I was wondering what is a similar tv feature wise to my G10? I am trying to see what they are going to offer as my replacement tv... I want to make sure it isn't worse than my G10 and hopefully a little better

Actually, seeing that the display you listed was THX certified, you probably have a good case to get the GT50 since it's the current THX certified 2012 model. In all reality, even the bottom of the line UT50 would probably give better image quality than the G10 since Panasonic's entire line this year is fantastic, but you might as well try to push for feature parity. I would also refuse the UT50 simply because it doesn't have the antiglare filter that your G10 has.

Hey guys! I've got a 5 year old Panasonic TH-50PX60U 720p plasma which is starting to give me the willies. I sometimes get a couple of purple lines/splotches @ 720p or 1080i which is making me think it's probably on its last legs. I have given this thread a browse and see that Panasonics still get lots of love here, which is fine, but I am by no means dead set on one. I am probably leaning towards Plasma, but not sold on it necessarily. I would probably like to buy one at my local Costco as I feel much better with their return policy and have it down to a few choices that I'd like input on. Firtly, TV is in my basement with minimal direct lighting. Glare is minimal, if any. I am not fussy and do not have a hard on for 3D, but if the TV has it as a feature I am not against it. TV is used for Netflix streaming and PS3 gaming along with Bluray and DVD through the PS3. We don't even subscribe to Satellite or cable anymore. I would like a 55-60" TV. Within reason, price isn't a huge issue. My local Costco has in stock: (All prices )LG 60PA6500 1080p 60" Plasma. This seems to have really good reviews and the price is attractive enough. $990 Samsung PN59D530 59" (??) Plasma. Amazon reviews seem a little sketchy about this box. $900 Toshiba 55L6200U 55" 1080p 3D LED. Don't know much about this. I do know it's "passive 3d." Is that bad? Good? $1580 Sony 55HX751 55" 3D 1080p LED. Also don't know much about it, but it's a Sony. $1800 I'm probably leaning against 3D, but if the TVs are superior I have no problem spending the $$. Opinions?

Which means you get to use the same (cheap) polarized lenses you do there. I'm shopping for a living room TV on a budget, which is sort of a nightmare. How's Vizio these days?
