My 1000:1 contrast ratio is pretty bad, but without a frame of reference it hasn't bothered me all that much. Some dark scenes do strike me with a "there should probably be more to this picture," but hardly unwatchable. That being said, I doubt any videophile would be happy with 1600:1. My next TV will be 10,000:1 at least, hopefully.

Got my KV-34XBR800 today! Man oh man was it a pain in the rear end to get into my room, but my friends and I managed. The seller threw in Sony's official stand that goes with it for $25, and it's a nice stand, very sturdy.

Anyway, there isn't any lag that I can perceive. It's been about two weeks since I played some beatmania, and I still need to adjust to the tallness of the screen, but after playing for a few hours I can tell I'm not being thrown off by lag.

And I just got through watching Snatch on it. What a great image! And only through S-Video, I might add (I used my PS2, and I should get component cables in the mail tomorrow. Cool thing is the remote controls the PS2's DVD functions! No more hooking up a controller.).

So, quick question: is it worth it to invest in a ~$100 upconverting Progressive Scan DVD player? Are there any cheaper players I should look for?

There seem to be a handful of complaints, but an overall excellent rating. Still, I'm concerned about buying something so expensive online. Anyone have any tips about buying TVs online?

Well, generally if the store you're buying from isn't rated horribly (looking at you, eCost), the only thing you should really have to worry about is

a) Inconvenience of return/repair since you don't have a B&M to drive to to just swap it out.

b) Damage during shipping.

Generally I'm patient so I was prepared to wait if there was any problem with my TV, and I was relatively okay with that. As far as damage goes, my box showed up with a giant loving dent in the middle where the LCD panel would be, but it was actually asthetically perfect, not one scratch.

If you can scope out the TV at a local B&M, you have a leg up since you can make your decision then send away for it.

My computer has HDMI, DVI, VGA, S-video out and is capable of outputting 1080p. I don't know which format is most easily supported for PC -> TV. Any recommendations on TV's.

P.S. I am looking for something bigger than 40 inches but my budget is about 1000. Probably less if my girlfriend finds out about this.

I'm real new to HDTV, and now that I've had a month or so to get used to my 37" Vizio, the colors and image are really starting to bother me. I can't adjust it at all. It seems like no matter what I do, all color disappears, it's too dark, too bright or some other weird thing.

What I'm trying to do:

1. Make the screen not seem so "bright" in general. I've tried brightness, but that option seems to mess other things up or leave the picture not looking as nice.

2. Make people stop looking like they have lipstick on all the time and have red faces. I'm exaggerating obviously, but it seems like the colors are past the point of looking "real" and look too fake or something.

After all the adjustments I make, I just keep coming back to the standard settings and giving up.

What do I need to do to this thing to make it right?

Backlight: 30
Brightness 52
Contrast: 91
Color: 40
Sharpness: 0
Color Temp: Red 142, Green 145, Blue 140

Advanced Video

DNR: Your preference
Everything else: off

Thats what I use and it's decent enough. Sometimes I tweak the contrast and brightness a bit depending on the movie. I used to have the backlight cranked up but it just makes the picture look like poo poo, really. I never go above 30 now.

I am not to concerned about losing the On Demand stuff because I Really don't use it all that often, so it's no big loss.

I also can't tell what the difference between Tivo HD & Tivo Series 3 HD. They both appear to be dual tuners, the series 3 just appears to look fancier, have some more recording time, and have a backlit remote. Is that the only difference? As long as the regular Tivo HD can do all the things a regular Tivo Series 3 box can do, I am fine with that. (The only other thing I can see is that it doesn't specificly say you can pause live TV)

I have the Terk HDTVa, which is the amplified version of the HDTVi. These generally get good reviews. The design is apparently a reference design - I think any of the antennas that look like this one should work pretty well.

I intended to buy the non amplified version, for the same reason you give. I live 4 miles from the towers in a big city. The amped version was what I could buy locally, though, and I didn't want to wait. It works fine with the amp off, and I set it up like that at first. But I was playing around with it and discovered that I could get a couple stations from the next city, about 20 miles away, with the amp turned on. I receive all of the stations that are close to me, and a handful of the ones that aren't that close.

Make sure you check out antennaweb.org for information on direction.

I tried a really crappy RCA antenna before this one, and it hardly worked at all. It was $14.99 and it really lived up to the price. I returned it after about an hour.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with that one. Since it is a best buy, you can go look at it in person and make sure you are happy with the backlighting and ghosting (if any).

I would recommend the 37" if you feel it would fit in your home. I used to have a 27" CRT and got a 32". At first I was blown away by the picture quality but now I am used to the quality and really wish I had a 37" instead. It would feel much more theater-like.

I don't think you can gently caress up too bad if you aren't concerned about getting the BEST DEAL EVAR. Make sure you like how it looks and don't feel bad about returning it if you don't like it.
