I'd like to see all the inputs and want to know if they fixed the viewing angle from the 61F which seemed to be it's only major issue. mango sentinel fucked around with this message at 02:12 on Apr 23, 2008 |

Ok, I have TV fever and I need some help trying to decide. I'm going to take my rebate check next month and put it towards a new TV so I want something in the 500-850$ range. Sometimes I will be sitting fairly close to it as it will be on my corner desk, other times I will be about 10 ft away from the TV. I will probably use it as a monitor sometimes but I have a 22" 1680x1050 LCD for my PC specifically. So I could use that for PC games and the TV for 360/Cable/Movies. My first question would be what size? 32" would be preferable while sitting at the desk. It may be ok at 9-10FT away but at that point 37" may be necessary. Any suggestions? My second question is the old 720p vs 1080p debate. Does this mostly come down to how often I use it as a PC monitor? I know 1080p is not really needed under 42". I know that in my range there are very few 1080p screens to choose from. I would have to pay a little more for one of the entry level Sharp or Toshiba 1080p TVs at 32". ALSO, the most important factor is gaming latency. I will be playing rock band and first person shooters on it, so I need something that will have very minimal latency while gaming. Here are my options so far, please give me some advice!!! Toshiba Regza 1080p 32" $899 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3731246&CatId=3649 Olevia 37" 720p http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889022029 Olevia 32" 720p http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889022070 Toshiba 32" 720p http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889253123 Also looking at the Sharp Aquos sub-$800 models that are floating around. They seem to have good reviews. Another option I am considering is a 28" Computer LCD that has multiple inputs such as the Hannspring at bestbuy, the Hanns-G at newegg, or the viewsonic at newegg. These would be great as a TV, I'm sure the latency will be the best for gaming out of the bunch and they have a really good price. Also, they have true 1080p for under $600 so that is a bonus when using it as a computer monitor. As you can see, I have many options, so if anyone can help rule out a few it would be much appreciated.

What's the difference between the TH-42PX80U and TH42PX80 Are these the same? The U is throwing me off. For the last 3 weeks I've been researching tvs like crazy thinking I would definitely be in the market, like you, once I got my rebate check. However, after reading all the reviews and checking on prices and looking at the differences between all of the tvs, I'm not going to upgrade just yet. I have a 32" Sharp Aquos that I absolutely love. I sit probably between 10" - 12" away from it sometimes and I still can pick up on fine details like fabrics and rocks on mountain ranges and facial pores; you know, all the good stuff. I play Wii and Super Nintendo on it regularly and it looks great, if there's any latency I haven't noticed. I also have a Comcast HD box hooked up via hdmi and an hd-dvd player hooked up via hdmi and they look and sound terrific. Hell, even when I use the TV's built in speakers instead of the stereo it sounds great. I also posted in here not too long ago asking for advice so I also want to thank everyone who offered up an opinion. I will be here to answer any questions anyone has about the Sharp Aquos as well. drat good tv, in my opinion.

For instance, the UK model has a VGA input and the ability to turn off overscan, which the US models lack (talking about PXs only). That said, I don't know if the Canadian version has any changes from the US one.

Those 850s are looking really nice, especially with the 24p playback support and professional calibration options in the user menu. edit: Panasonic said "Spring 2008" last I heard. I haven't seen a specific date but I also haven't been keeping up on the 850 news since they're way out of my price bracket.

Hasn't randomly power cycled on you? How's the backlight uniformity when displaying a solid black screen? Any light leakage around the edges of the panel? Being a plasma guy i have to say i'm still really impressed by the steps Samsung has taken in the last 2 years as far as LCD quality goes. There used to be issues with fitting a full 720p resolution on 42" plasmas. Now they've gone up to 1080p on 42" sets, but stick with 1024x768 for 42" 720p sets just because it's far cheaper than retooling facilities to make full 720p 42" panels when 720p sets will be dead in a year or two anyway. Unless you really need the 2:2 24hz playback or extra color controls.

Power off thing fixed with a firmware update (bless Samsung for putting a usb port on the tv). If I turn the backlight to 10 and the brightness way up (way past the point of looking good), I get some minor clouding. Not even in the same league of the Sony v2500 I had, which had horrible flashlighting and clouding at just about every level. Right now I have the backlight at 6, I think contrast is at 95 and brightness at 46 which is probably not the "proper" levels but it's how I like it. I usually use a tiny CFL backlight in the room but if I turn it off at night and pause on a black screen, you can't tell the TV's on.

I'm looking for a 32" LCD tv between £400 and £450. I've been looking around a lot and this seems to be one of the best choices. Philips 32PFL5522D Under video formats it mentions: 1920 x 1080i - 2Fh,1920 x 1080p. Does that mean it is a 1080p tv or? It seems too cheap to be one. This tv was also released about a year ago, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I'm also looking at Sony 32P3020 and Toshiba 32AV504. Which one would you choose out of these three, and are there any others I should be looking at, given that I live in the UK?

This is a question regarding DVI-HDMI cables. I just bought a new desktop and am waiting for shipping, and I will be using my 20" HDTV (1366 x 768) as a monitor in order to conserve room and space. The VGA input is crippled by the manufacturer, it will only accept up to 1024 x 768. So I will be using the HDMI input. My question: Will HDMI accept a resolution value of 1366 x 768 or must I set the resolution output at 1280 x 720?

I happened to stop my parents from getting scammed into buying a $1500 bravia by the fry's ad in order to watch their normal SD cable. They've been utterly convinced that they want a hi-def set, but the bravia is just overkill for what they have/need. Their target is 40", the entertainment center it is going in has a 45"x27" opening. I'm thinking of the costco 37" vizio since it had decent goon reviews for a while - is it still a good deal?

The 46A650 comes with 120Hz capability, 50,000:1 contrast, and 4ms response and I believe is a thinner screen. The 46A750 mystifies me as it has 50,000:1 contrast ratio, an inferior 6ms response time, and a thicker profile than the 46A650 but is a higher series and costs more, which I think is because of the DNIe Pro feature which I don't know anything about. The 750 has better speakers and bullshit media-streaming playback gimmicks. Other than that it's just a 650 with a better looking bezel. There's also now A530 and A540 sets with no real information on their site as to the differences other than some contrast ratio changes. I assume either the A530 or A540 is their matte-screened version, but haven't looked into it. Also Samsung's contrast ratios literally change on their site week to week, so they're all but meaningless. Same goes for the response times; you can check their site, user manual, and service manual and get 3 different values. Basically they seem to be a massive unorganized clusterfuck that has taken TV options to ridiculous extremes. Also don't forget that all of the Touch of Color sets will be coming out in more than just red. Conceivably once they've released everything there could be 10 or so sets available in each screen size with little or no difference between them.
